INSIGHT AND FORESIGHT MEET WITH COLOR TRENDS FROM SHERWIN-WILLIAMS A trend is so much more than a fashion statement, Twitter topic or change in direction. A true trend is backed by science and originates from global and societal insights. When it comes to color trends, the Sherwin-Williams DesignHouse takes a scientific approach to predicting, identifying and establishing trends based on mega, macro and micro-level influences. Trends, not to be confused with fads that fade within a year, denote the following lifespans and criteria: • Mega, 10-50-year lifespan: Long-lasting, global phenomena that influence all areas of life. • Macro, 5-10-year lifespan: Specific major patterns born from a mega trend or contribute to a mega trend. • Micro, 1-3-year lifespan: Niche trends that signal the potential for consumer acceptance or purchasing behavior.
Color trends from the Sherwin-Williams DesignHouse are futuristic, reflecting trends that will be active 3-5 years from now. The product development process can take years, thus establishing color trends in advance is critical to meeting consumer expectations. “Sparking design inspiration through color is a top priority for us,” says Kiki Redhead, Global CMF & Trend Manager at the Sherwin-Williams DesignHouse. “Introducing color trends to our customers years in advance gives them an advantage in the marketplace. Our foresight is their competitive edge.” Discover our latest Trend Forecast, A Spark of Familiarity, and dive into three extraordinary color collections – Explore, Escape and Empower. Inspired by truth, culture, beliefs, environment, humanity, society, science, technology, connection, conservation, economy, ethics and government, these are the catalysts that spark the trends of tomorrow. Explore the three forecasted trends on page 6 and find inspiration for your future projects.
Through a six-step forecasting process that includes trend management, identification and research, analysis, watching, spotting, reporting and application, we create our inaugural DesignHouse Trend Forecast, which presents three separate color stories.

The most time-intensive part of the trend forecasting process is the identification and research phase. Trend identification and research start by examining patterns from sources, such as government publications, science journals, opinion pieces, news reports, magazines, design, art and culture at the mega, macro and micro levels. After a year of data collection, the color experts at DesignHouse analyze the results and translate them into niche color trends for specific general industrial markets.

GIVING A LIFT TO MANUFACTURING EFFICIENCIES Skyjack operates its business with a focus on manufacturing simple, reliable and durable machinery for the aerial lift industry.
S
kyjack, based in Ontario, Canada, offers an impressive line of products for the equipment rental industry – manufacturing scissor lifts, vertical mast lifts, articulating boom lifts, telescopic boom lifts and telehandlers. As a full line Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) supplier, Skyjack distributes equipment directly to rental companies worldwide, who then rent the machines out to painters, plumbers, electricians and other general laborers. Depending on the type of lift, the machines have a wide range of applications, from interior and exterior painting, window installation, or lifting up to 20,000 pounds at a construction site.

BUILT TO LAST Beginning in 1985, Skyjack has spearheaded the evolution of the scissor lift. The manufacturer efficiently expanded their product lineup over the years and was the first to introduce the swing out component tray on scissor lifts and to launch narrow and high platforms. Skyjack continues to stay on the cutting-edge of the equipment rental industry by prioritizing quality products and coatings. Skyjack focuses on producing reliable equipment that incorporates easy-to-understand technology, ensuring that each machine is simple
“ We’re a company who does our best to be easy to do business with – both with our customers and internally with our team. We looked for that in a coatings supplier and Sherwin-Williams maintains that culture as well.” – Malcolm Early, Vice President of Marketing at Skyjack
to operate and can withstand the harsh demands of high-volume utilization. “Our focus is on quality and reliability,” said Malcolm Early, Vice President of Marketing at Skyjack. “It’s the mindset that helps us maintain a solid reputation as an industry leader.” Sherwin-Williams has served as Skyjack’s preferred coatings supplier since 2007 and initially provided R-Cure 550 liquid coatings. This nonisocyanate 2K paint was specifically formulated for Skyjack’s paint line to optimize durability and ease of application, without compromising workplace health and safety. As Skyjack grew, they needed faster throughput and improved durability. Sherwin-Williams Valde® EFC powder coatings were a great solution. The Sherwin-Williams resin development team formulated the resin system for Valde EFC to provide users with a super-durable coating that is curable at both very low and high temperatures and has excellent storage ability. This technology exclusive to Sherwin-Williams - is ideal for customers who have a broad range of steel gauges and require fast throughput. Because Skyjack produces machines that are a working platform and consistently change hands, they need to be built to last with durable
products and coatings. Skyjack saw an improvement in the durability of their machines once they began using Valde EFC. “Durability was key, and the powder coating gives us what we need,” said Manuel Pereira, General Supervisor of Plant 2 at Skyjack.
When Skyjack was formed, their tagline of “simply reliable” directly related to their machines. However, as they’ve grown as a company, that meaning is incorporated into every aspect of their business – including their working relationship with Sherwin-Williams.
This extremely low-cure finish also enabled Skyjack to increase productivity and lower some expense costs, such as gas fired ovens. “It reduced our carbon footprint as well,” Early added.
“We’re a company who does our best to be easy to do business with – both with our customers and internally with our team,” said Early. “We looked for that in a coatings supplier and Sherwin-Williams maintains that culture as well.”
A CUSTOM OFFERING Using these two core Sherwin-Williams paint products, Skyjack can produce more than 90 color palettes. For their own color scheme, the marketing team at Skyjack chose traditional gray and orange-red colors for its machines, which reflects the company’s branding. The team then worked with Sherwin-Williams to develop custom colors and bring them to life on the equipment. Skyjack also gives the same opportunity to customers, allowing them to choose custom colors for their machinery. In addition to products, David Barlow, Key Account Manager, and Doug Proper, Technical Services Representative, from Sherwin-Williams provide technical expertise and field support to Skyjack. “We get first-hand communication from David at our color meetings and Doug’s knowledge of the industry on the shop floor,” said Pereira.

A SPARK OF FAMILIARITY DesignHouse Trend Forecast
As humans, we crave meaningful relationships – to self, to family and friends, and to community. The desire to connect exists globally and locally, through arts, culture, belief systems, nature, environment, government, science and technology.
EXPLORE FROM HERE TO ETERNITY
From Sci-fi to Wi-Fi, discovery through advanced technology shifts perspectives and informs reality. What was unchartered before is now verified by experts, such as Earth-like planets in far-off galaxies, and deep-water bioluminescent and shapeshifting species. Science is making strides towards clean alternatives that combat pollutants. We are explorers, traversing unknown landscapes, thirsting for more understanding of what’s beyond the human eye – looking high and low, from the sea to the sky, from the city to the forest. Simultaneously, we employ algorithms that feed knowledge to artificial
intelligence, humanizing the machine, making them autonomous. We augment and virtualize reality, experiencing life through the lens of tech. The future is bigger than us, it’s from here to eternity, and it commands our respect. As deep as the sea, and as vast as the galaxy, the navy and violet hues represent the profound darkness of place and our determination as humans. They are a backdrop to the electric luminosity radiating from bio-bright accents and the spectacular sparkle of the stars.

These influences serve as catalysts that shape society and the mega trends that give light to the future. As designers and creatives, it is our responsibility to not only honor connection, but to challenge and disrupt the familiar. This should spark new product ideation. Connecting each of the three macro trend themes – EXPLORE, ESCAPE and EMPOWER – are familiar topics examined in a new light, slowly burning while evolving, signaling a spark into the future.

ESCAPE TAKE A HIKE
INFLUENCES

Amended technology and global connection are opening more opportunities to escape into the world’s backdrop, through photographs or through reality. For some, escaping into the wilderness connects sole to soul, nourishing the spirit with nature while remote, off-the-grid and unplugged. From the forests of Japan, to the hot springs of Iceland, traveling to new terrain is your escape. For others, escape is a five-minute break from the hustle and bustle of your desk, scrolling through social media images of friends
and family, reminding you of life outside of work. No matter how you choose to escape, it’s doctor’s orders.

There is no majority or minority – only humanity. Generation Z campaigns for a better future, one where a single voice can facilitate positive and powerful change. Take action – that’s the platform. Whether it’s time to play or time to protest, we express ourselves in hopes that we create one inclusive tribe that promotes acceptance and transparency. We passionately lobby for a society that is fun and serious – one that strikes the right balance. The social world in which we live allows us
to share our art, experience and culture, but above all, our individuality. We are someone, and we are everyone. Bold and bright reds and blues have solidified their place in political history, but today, a color shift is in order. When paired with conscious, transparent and progressive hues of green, a vibrant global color party is created. As a symbol of unification, a grounding natural tone anchors the necessary balance of power and play.
