handheld spectrophotometer. The ColorReaderPRO connects to nearly 500 in-stock powder products, which allows customers to quickly identify powder that meets their color needs. The new Powdura Color Guide was also on display, featuring more than 200 in-stock colors, including finishes that filled gaps in the old product line. The guide offers textured powder coatings and special effect palettes. “People loved the color guide and were really excited to get their hands on one,” said John Morey, Market Segment Director for Sherwin-Williams General Industrial. “We actually had to get more flown in the next day because they were flying off our shelves.”
SUPPORTING NEW AND EXISTING CUSTOMERS Sherwin-Williams Introduced New Technology and Filled Information Gaps at FABTECH 2019 Exhibiting at FABTECH, North America’s largest metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing event, is a great opportunity for the Sherwin-Williams General Industrial Division to connect with its customers each year. During the 2019 event, held in Chicago from November 11-14, the company showcased new products, programs and educational information. INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS The Sherwin-Williams booth highlighted three assets to help improve business operations for its customers – DuraPeak™, the ColorReaderPRO handheld spectrophotometer and the new Powdura® Color Guide.
IMPACTFUL EDUCATION Sherwin-Williams presented twice at FABTECH. Tabitha McLeish, Global Powder Coatings Director for Sherwin-Williams, spoke about how to identify causes of finishing defects as they relate to the coating process and how to prevent them from returning. Multiple attendees were interested in learning more about common paint defects, and it was well-timed that they could be directed toward her session for more information. Dan Szczepanik, Marketing Director for Sherwin-Williams, presented about the evolution of liquid reactive chemistry primers and topcoats, which included information on the new DuraPeak technology. Immediately after the session ended, an attendee asked for more information on the coating platform, excited about the possibility of improving throughput and eliminating a bottleneck in their coating process. By participating in FABTECH, Sherwin-Williams General Industrial continues to establish an industry presence and showcase the different ways the division can support customers across multiple segments.
DuraPeak, a new solvent-based liquid coating, quickly cures and has a long pot-life, delivering rapid cycle times and exceptional durability. The new technology illustrated in DuraPeak offers optimal performance with a smooth, high-gloss finish for multiple heavy equipment OEM applications.
“At FABTECH, we have an opportunity to present ourselves to new and existing customers,” said Morey. “We are able to identify new customers that we may not have known existed and who may not have known we participated in that market space. We also let our current customers know how dedicated we are.”
The Color Express™ program enhances color matching, application and delivery capabilities, with the use of the ColorReaderPRO

TECH TIP Charge The Powder
“For powder coating applications, there is a misconception that high powder output helps get more work done. In reality, powder charging is what attracts powder to parts and increases powder deposition. To prevent excessive air from blowing powder away, slow the output down and charge the powder – resulting in more powder on the part.” — James Gutapfel, Senior Technical Services Representative

TEAMING UP FOR SUCCESS
Mabe, a leading home appliance manufacturer in Mexico, was formed on the basis of a partnership. More than 70 years later, the company still efficiently operates with a focus on collaboration.
I
n 1946 Egon Mabardi and Francisco Berrondo founded Mabe, merging the first two letters of each of their family names to create the company name. This initial collaboration foreshadowed the teamwork that would grow the success of the manufacturing company. In 1997 Mabe established a partnership with General Electric (GE), which projected Mabe internationally. Then in 2016, Haier of China bought GE Appliances, incorporating Mabe into one of the biggest appliance groups in the world. Currently, Mabe manufactures an array of appliance products for both domestic and exportation markets, including ovens, refrigerators and laundry machines.

A STRATEGIC ALLIANCE While Mabe grew its business and global presence, the manufacturer also developed a collaborative working relationship with Sherwin-Williams. The history between the two companies began when Mabe first started working with Valspar 20 years ago and has continued since the Sherwin-Williams acquisition of Valspar in 2017. Sherwin-Williams supplies polyester, polyurethane and hybrid powder coatings to Mabe. “We are very satisfied with the level of efficiency and quality of products Sherwin-Williams is supplying to us,” said Ricardo Iturralde, the Glass, Paints and Enamels Global Sourcing Negotiator at Mabe.
A JOINT EFFORT Most recently, Mabe initiated an improvement that launched a new collaboration between the manufacturer, Sherwin-Williams, Sames Kremlin and Sifap Technology. In 2018, Sherwin-Williams proposed that Mabe switch to a powder bell sprayer to improve coating efficiencies in Mabe’s finishing line. After conducting a successful trial run, Mabe chose the Sames Kremlin Inobell Powder Bell Sprayers, which were installed by Sifap Technology at the factory in San Luis, Mexico.
Sherwin-Williams LATAM Sales Director, Bernardo Jaime, and Mexico Sales Director, Guillermo Castell negotiated with Mabe to help the company decide on investing in Sames Kremlin equipment for its first paint line. Mabe is currently scoping out installation of Sames Kremlin sprayers for two other paint lines and are implementing trials at another factory location in Mexico.
CONTINUED SUPPORT Even after the installation, Sherwin-Williams continued to provide support to the factory as the company learned to use the new Sames Kremlin technology. Caballero explained how critical it was to have on-site help from their Sherwin-Williams technical service representatives, Victor Rivas and Israel Zapata. “Israel is the first on the line to give us a hand, while Victor is regularly here in the plant helping us,” said Caballero. “Sames Kremlin also checks in with us and helps us solve any technical issues.” Caballero further explains that what sets Mabe and the factory apart from their competition is the quality of the products they provide to their consumers. The manufacturer produces a range of appliances from professional-grade products to low-end products — all finished with the highest quality solutions. This includes
It was originally estimated that the paint line equipment in Area No. 2 of the manufacturing site would have to shut down for two weeks to install the new Inobell sprayers. With a two-week timeline, the project would have started in December during the holiday break. To avoid such a long delay, Sherwin-Williams, Sifap Technology and Sames Kremlin provided Mabe the flexibility to expedite the installation, accomplishing it over a weekend in March instead. The Inobell sprayers use a high electrostatic charge, which increases the rate of paint transfer and delivers an excellent finish quality. In addition to improved transfer rate and aesthetic appearance, the new spray equipment reduced paint waste and lowered equipment maintenance expenses. Since installing the Sames Kremlin Inobell sprayers, Mabe has seen 30% in savings for total paint deducted annually.
“We are happy to have a very good relationship with Sherwin-Williams. We thank you for all the support, and all the concern and interest you have for our business.” – Roberto Caballero, Productivity Manager at Mabe
Sherwin-Williams coatings and associated products available through the coatings supplier. Rivas expressed how nice it’s been for Mabe and Sherwin-Williams “to have this working relationship and to have grown both companies together.”
All three companies came together to enable the success of this new technology for Mabe. “It’s been nice to work with both the Sherwin-Williams and Sames Kremlin teams,” said Roberto Caballero, the Productivity Manager at Mabe. “They’ve helped us a lot, and we’re seeing cost reduction and quality improvement for this facility.”
