GENERAL INDUSTRIAL COATINGS

THE VITAL FINISHING TOUCH

LOCAL SUCCESS,

WORLDWIDE IMPACT DANIEL SZCZEPANIK Global Marketing Director, Transportation Segments, General Industrial Coatings

It’s a remarkable time in the long history of Sherwin-Williams, as Henry Sherwin’s original vision to “Cover the Earth” as a global provider of paint has now become a reality – not only for us, but for many of the manufacturers and finishers we support. From marketers to technical labs and business development teams, local actions of almost every industrial organization are now resonating around the world. In today’s society where knowledge is easily accessible, we have to be mindful that we are making a global impact. Successful teams are taking the smallest opportunities – one project or one sale – and leveraging those wins to gain business across the street and across the ocean. Today’s sales closure now has the ability to activate opportunities from California to Chile to China. In this issue, you will learn how California Specialty Painting is creating partnerships with suppliers to provide their customers with the very best the industry has to offer. Specializing in professional paint and finishing services, this Southern California company serves multiple essential industries – coating materials used in some of the world’s most precious and even life-saving equipment. Through these trusted partnerships, I am reminded how not only sales travel, but how products and services do as well. Polane® 8990 multipurpose coating is a great example of this. Streamlining our General Industrial product offering, this full gloss range polyurethane was developed to replace multiple products and improve performance and productivity. It is formulated to meet even the most stringent VOC regulations in markets worldwide – as international product planning and platforms are a must in today’s global economy. We are constantly striving to improve our global reach with expanded product offerings and value-added services. One way to do this is through universally available on-the-go technology and applications. The ColorReaderPRO is bringing on-demand powder color matches to customer’s fingertips, allowing you to quickly respond to your customers’ most urgent needs. Within the General Industrial marketplace, we all have the opportunity to make a worldwide impact. Seek avenues to leverage success across your state and across continents.

SHERWIN-WILLIAMS PROFINISHER

THE VITAL FINISHING TOUCH

Serving multiple essential industries, California Specialty Painting partners with Sherwin-Williams to offer custom professional paint and finishing services that provide quality workmanship, high performance, and uncompromising protection to meet precise customer specifications. When George Gilbert took ownership of California Specialty Painting more than 12 years ago, he knew he had big plans for the Santa Fe Springs company. Since then, he has grown the company significantly and continues to experience even greater triumphs. As for his key to success, the business owner emphasizes that creating advantages for his customers is his top priority. “I’m always asking myself what kind of value-added performance I can provide to my customers,” Gilbert said. Serving the aerospace, military, architecture, medical, and electronics industries, California Specialty Painting’s coating capabilities offer customization opportunities for their customers and cover a wide range of applications. Some of those applications include highly important, life-saving equipment and supplies for manufacturers of high-pressure metal gas cylinders. These cylinders are used for life support, fire extinguishers, oxygen and other medical gases, military equipment and gear, scuba tanks, alternative fuel, and aerospace assets.

We provide more than coatings. Our complete product finishing solution includes over 10,000 brand-name equipment and supplies to address the entire process, from sanding to shipping. Our dedicated experts also work with a diverse group of suppliers and manufacturers to serve all of your finishing needs, including providing on-site support to help you enhance your line. Contact your General Industrial Coatings Sales Representative or visit oem.sherwin-williams.com/equipmentandsupplies to learn more.

Since they work with materials that set the framework for some of the world’s most precious equipment, California Specialty Painting depends on top-quality products and services to deliver outstanding results. For Gilbert, quality means understanding who the customer is and what their expectations are – and meeting those expectations. It also means teaming up with reliable, proven suppliers. California Specialty Painting works with Sherwin-Williams to deliver the quality finishing touch to their products. As the global leader in the manufacture, development, distribution, and sale of industrial paints and coatings, Sherwin-Williams meets the highest standards in providing world-class service and solutions to Gilbert’s customers.

We’ve also seen a technical improvement and better hide,” Gilbert explained. “We’re essentially using less paint and getting better performance.” In the near future, Gilbert is eager to offer his customers the customization and color matching capabilities of the Polane products, along with other customizable Sherwin-Williams General Industrial GENESIS® coatings.

“I’m all about value add and I strive to get that same kind of thing from the suppliers and vendors that I work with,” Gilbert said. “And that’s exactly what Sherwin-Williams has brought to us.” Sherwin-Williams General Industrial Sales Rep, Steve Benson, first serviced California Specialty Painting for smaller needs, but through persistence and top-quality solutions, he has converted SherwinWilliams to be the lead supplier for Gilbert’s company. “Steve is very much a value-added representative. He has really helped us to get through some challenging times in terms of quality from previous suppliers,” Gilbert said about Benson. “He has come to know the people in our shops and facilities and he knows our business.” Another benefit California Specialty Painting gained through the partnership has been the local distribution channels and the specialized, on-site service from Sherwin-Williams General Industrial Technical Service Representative, Jimmy Peralta. “My painters love seeing him because he gives expert technical information and works through anything they’re experiencing,” Gilbert said. “There are a number of people at Sherwin-Williams that go beyond the call of duty. It’s a full team effort from Sherwin-Williams.” California Specialty Painting uses Sherwin-Williams paints and coatings on metal and composite substrates for commercial, industrial, and medical materials. Because they finish materials for some of the most critical end uses, the painters often encounter special circumstances and precise specifications. “One of the things that separates us is that we take on the challenging materials, such as surface energy and glass,” Gilbert continued, “and we’ll go the extra mile for our customers to get additional performance out of a coating.” To optimize performance, improve return to service times, and reduce their costs, California Specialty Painting has been utilizing the Polane® family of products. “We are using less material than before and at a price point that is comparable to what we had been using previously.

“We’re excited about doing color matching straight from the GENESIS system,” he said. “The ability to color match with Sherwin-Williams and have it within an hour of pulling the formula from the software and mixing it will be great. The fact that it comes in small quantities is also an advantage.” Gilbert also discussed the importance of Military Specification (Mil Spec) Paints and the value of Sherwin-Williams’ robust portfolio of solutions that provide outstanding performance and durability under the most rigorous military conditions. “For us, Mil Spec product availability is a huge advantage,” Gilbert advised. “We’ve had rationalization issues and lead times that were blown out of proportion in the past. Since working with the SherwinWilliams reps, we can get Mil Spec paint within two days of ordering and that’s been outstanding.” The collaboration between California Specialty Painting and SherwinWilliams allows Gilbert to deliver on his promise to “meet his customers’ expectations without error – on time, every time.” “We provide our customers with services that add value or are cutting edge,” Gilbert concluded. “We like being on top of the curb, instead of being absorbed by it.”

“I’m all about value add and I strive to get that same kind of thing from the suppliers and vendors that I work with – and that’s exactly what Sherwin-Williams has brought to us.” George Gilbert, Owner, California Specialty Painting

Incorporating Color Checks Settings are oftentimes overlooked when applying coatings. Minor adjustments in fluid and air pressures can drastically change the outcome of finished product, especially with low gloss or metallic coatings. — Greg Sherwood, Technical Services Representative
