In 2013, after 100 years as the most used bat in Major League Baseball (MLB), Louisville Slugger had an opportunity: MLB players were looking for a new kind of high build, high-gloss finish on their bats. The company reached out to three regional paint suppliers, but none were able to develop a coating that both produced the finish players were looking for while meeting the company’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements. With only three weeks until spring training, Louisville Slugger contacted Sherwin-Williams to help find a solution.

Our people are experienced industry leaders committed to your success. We listen. We explore new solutions to get the job done.

Our service model is unmatched in the industry. Design engineers and transition teams assist customers every step of the way, providing on-site support. More than 70 company-owned facilities in North America quickly deliver standard and custom color products. And a recent upgrade to our Global Color and Design Center in Greensboro, North Carolina means we can continue to help you stay ahead of emerging trends while learning the latest finishing techniques. We are the leader in industrial wood finishing for many reasons. But the main reason is your continued confidence in our ability to serve you. We may be global. But we never forget to act local.

CHALLENGE A Louisville Slugger bat must have the quality finish of a high-end piece of furniture and, at the same time, be able to stand up to extremely violent impact over and over. The finishes Louisville Slugger was using were not staying on the product like they needed to. When the finish was not hard enough, the baseball could leave seam marks on the bat. And, if the finish did not adhere properly to the bat, the baseball could take off the topcoat. Additionally, air quality regulations require the company to get certification and prove every year that it is not exceeding its VOC emission limits.

SOLUTION In three short weeks, Sherwin-Williams implemented a three-step process to produce a high gloss, smooth and extremely durable finish that would meet EPA requirements and deliver the look players wanted in time for spring training.

NATURAL, PREMIUM AND PERSONALIZED WOOD FINISHING TRENDS OF 2017

You have spent countless hours developing your product, and its finish deserves the same consideration. The latest color and design trends are outlined below to help you find the right finish and give your product a competitive edge.

A Natural Look…

High Solid Coatings

As life gets busier, our homes have become sanctuaries, centered on simplicity and serenity. This has resulted in a gradual shift to natural and warm colors, which maintain balance without venturing too far in any direction. Poised Taupe, the Sherwin-Williams color of the year, is the perfect example. Gray tones also continue to be popular among consumers, who are excited by the close-to-the-wood look achieved with matte and flat finishes.

As VOC regulations continue to evolve, businesses looking to boost volume may run up against permit limits. As a result, demand is increasing for waterborne and high solids coatings, such as SHER-WOOD® KemVar® Plus Pigmented Conversion Varnish and SHER-WOOD® Hi-Bild™ Precat Lacquer.

…With Personal Flair Yet while being drawn to the neutral versatility of grays and white, Baby Boomers and Millennials also want their homes to reflect their individual styles and tastes. In the kitchen, for example, gray cabinets may be offset with a pop of color on the island. Increasingly, greens and blues are used as accent colors to add life to the home. As we move away from the previously popular cookie-cutter look, there has also been a rise in the number of custom, painted cabinets and furniture in homes and apartments.

The Elegance of European Coatings Technology Luxurious finishes from ultra-high gloss to refined satins give wood products a premium feel. Manufacturers demanding the very best finish look to Sherwin-Williams Sayerlack® advanced Italian coatings systems. These finishes are designed for a upscale European look that is also resistant to moisture, chemicals and scratches, allowing finishers to create a beautiful, class-A finish in as few steps as possible.

SHER-WOOD KemVar Plus Pigmented Conversion Varnish is a high solids catalyzed wood finishing system available in a broad array of colors to create a look as unique as your work. With excellent resistance to a wide range of conditions – from household chemicals to moisture to cold check – KemVar Plus delivers the performance needed for lasting use. It has excellent toughness and mar-resistance so nothing will compromise the finish of your fine cabinetry, furniture and other wood products. SHER-WOOD Hi-Bild Precat Lacquer is a fast drying, high performance, high solids precatalyzed lacquer for kitchen and bath cabinets and the general wood finishing market. After catalyzation, it provides a four-month pot life. This ready-to-spray, clear lacquer boasts 20 percent higher volume solids than traditional PreCat lacquers and contains a UV absorber, significantly reducing the discoloration of natural wood from exposure to sunlight.

Q &A

GLOBAL COLOR AND DESIGN CENTER WITH JOE KUJAWSKI, BUSINESS DIRECTOR, INDUSTRIAL WOOD COATINGS

When it’s time to bring your creative vision to life on the finishing line, the Sherwin-Williams Global Color and Design Center (GCDC) has you covered. Joe Kujawski, Business Director, Industrial Wood Coatings, answers your questions about how we can help your design inspirations become reality. What is the GCDC? Located near High Point, North Carolina, the Sherwin-Williams Global

Color and Design Center is the foremost authority on finish styling for every kind of wood product—residential and commercial furniture, kitchen cabinets, doors and windows, flooring, and specialty wood products such as jet and yacht interiors, electric guitars and picture frames. The GCDC’s mission is to help manufacturers create new finishes that give their product greater market appeal. Our color and design team monitors style trends across industries, product categories and regions, and they know exactly what finishes are needed to drive sales in any target market. Our studio team also provides color consultations and trends forecasting presentations. We review a client’s standard color palette, identify gaps, and advise on what finishes should

be added or removed. The team can fine-tune a pallet to any target market. You can also work with our experts to develop a personalized finish system for meeting your aesthetic, performance and process requirements. Who works with the GCDC? Virtually every major furniture brand takes style and design

advice from our color studio. For example, we have a hand in creating the exciting finishes on the world’s most famous brands of professional electric guitars. In addition, chances are, the kitchen cabinet manufacturers with the most stylish finishes are clients of the color studio. And, the nation’s top seller of custom picture frames is a loyal client that looks to our color studio to keep its frame finishes on point with emerging home furnishing trends. What are some examples of the studio’s work? A major upscale furniture retailer came

to us to launch a new collection targeted to urban North American Millennials. For this audience, we recommended a smoky gray walnut stain with a low gloss finish and light distressing effects. The retailer took our advice, and the collection was a big success. Another major retailer wanted guidance on a finish for a vacation home furniture line for Baby Boomers in the coastal Southeast U.S. The studio team knew a warm teak tone stain with natural wear distressing and a medium gloss finish would sell in this market, and made step panels of its recommended finishes so the furniture brand’s factory could match the finish. How do I schedule a visit to the GCDC? Visit oem.sherwin-williams.com/gcdc or contact your

local Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood Coatings Sales Representative to schedule an appointment and learn more about how we can work with you throughout the design process, from education to creation to production. It’s all about maximizing your ability to respond to consumer trends while running an efficient, profitable finishing operation.

The Sherwin-Williams team, led by Sales Manager Timothy Schoen, worked with Louisville Slugger to ensure the finishing team could properly apply the finishes on the line. Today, the team continues to look in on the operators to address any issues and help the finishing process run smoothly. “The technical side of Sherwin-Williams has been wonderful,” said Matt Bynum, Industrial Engineer Project Coordinator, Louisville Slugger. “They’ve proposed better spray equipment and better material handling options.”

RESULTS Bynum credits Sherwin-Williams’ high-quality coatings, customer service and technical support as making all the difference in the development of its new, improved and in-demand bats.

They have helped us achieve what a lot of people didn’t think we could – to once again make the best professional baseball bat in the MLB. Matt Bynum, Industrial Engineer Project Coordinator, Louisville Slugger

TIPS

Prevent Separation and Fallout Always make sure the paint is mixed, stirred or blended well, especially when using high acetone blends or low VOC products. This will prevent separation and fall out. This includes stains, sealers and lacquers. – Ron Kokinda, Technical Service Representative, Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood Coatings
