MINIMIZING OVERSPRAY PREVAL® SUCCESS STORY ®
Challenge A customer approached Sherwin-Williams Sales Representative Brian Wagemann, and Brandon McKinnon, their local Sherwin-Williams facility manager, to evaluate its paint line’s touch-up process. The aerosols the company has traditionally used to touch up the paint on its 10-foot transformers required special storage, disposal and inventory management. Inconsistency of force and paint level from the aerosols, nozzle clogs and poor spray patterns were also common issues that complicated the process of ensuring a quality final appearance. Additionally, the aerosol spray paints produced significant amounts of overspray and made it challenging to get a good angle on the hard-to-reach spots that needed to be touched up. The paint sprayed from an aerosol can would bounce off the transformers’ parts and create a mist that would get onto other units being worked on four or five feet away. In many cases, the transformers were so large they required the use of a ladder to touch up spots by hand.

Solution Output control was critical. Brian and Brandon suggested the Preval® vFan cordless touch-up sprayer to help eliminate the overspray. It allows the user to atomize coatings in nano-sized droplets, enabling precise delivery of both ultra-thin and highly viscous coatings. The fan tip delivers a variable spray pattern – from 1/16” detail to a 3” fan – specifically designed to address overspray in the touch-up process. The vFan can be used with catalyzed solventand water-based coatings, allowing finishers to work with paint they already have on-site. With this solution, the customer would be able to easily handle touch-ups wherever they are located on the transformer, despite the limitations of a ladder. The portable vFan Airbrush can be turned in any angle and, together with the hose and pressurized can of 150 Feet of ENERGY, fits in the painter’s pocket.
