A SAME-DAY SWITCH BASED ON COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES Armed with the results of a ProVisions™ Efficiency Audit (an onsite audit of a customer’s finishing process) conducted by James to keep the production line at Cabinet Concepts by Design running at peak performance, Dan and James stopped by the custom cabinetry facility in Springfield, Missouri, with samples of Super Bond®, a type II adhesive from Roo Glue. Having Roo Glue’s technical expert on-site allowed for quick and easy confirmation that Cabinet Concepts by Design’s RF cure oven would perform well with Roo Glue adhesives. Later that same day, Cabinet Concepts by Design was ready to switch to Super Bond after tests confirmed the samples created a strong bond and dried slightly faster than previous adhesives.

CRUSHING SUCCESS WITH PRODUCT PERFORMANCE Next, Dan and James visited the SLS Audio/Division of Dolby Laboratories, a manufacturer of world-class loudspeakers, to test Roo Glue products by conducting a very unique experiment that involved a ten-foot drop test on completed speakers. Dolby Laboratories had been using a type III exterior adhesive from a competitor

A Winning Combination: World-Class Coating Technology and Local Experts A line audit of the shop’s conditions and needs let Greg and Lori know they had the right coatings to not only solve Rutt’s issues, but also significantly reduce turnaround time and streamline the finishing process – all while using existing equipment. The first step was to identify the right primer and stain. With Sherwin-Williams SHER-WOOD® SB Stain System, which requires fewer steps to achieve darker colors, Rutt was able to increase wood clarity while eliminating the need for a fourth coat. The SHER-WOOD SB Stain System antisettling feature boosts the stain’s stability and color dispersion, and increases its workability. For the topcoat, Greg and Lori identified a Sherwin-Williams conversion varnish that, together with the SHER-WOOD SB Stain base, ensures batch-to-batch color consistency, significantly reducing mismatched components and curtailing the need for rework, saving time and money. Finally, the Aurora™ Color System, an online color management solution from Sherwin-Williams, was introduced to the finishing process. With Aurora, Rutt can create custom stain colors, store and retrieve formulas, and ensure color consistency for every job. For more on Aurora, see page 4 of this issue.

PARTNERING TO GIVE YOU TIME AND MONEY SAVINGS THAT STICK CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 that cracked after it was dropped only once. In comparison, it took three drops to break a speaker that was assembled using Roo Glue® Super Bond® and the experiment revealed the joint where the adhesive was applied did not crack or split apart. The break was actually caused by the wood delaminating. In fact, the glue joint was still intact after the test! Since switching to Super Bond, Dolby Laboratories has increased its speakers’ adhesion performance and durability while reducing the cost of its adhesive products.

A COLOR THAT STICKS THANKS TO CUSTOM FORMULATION Finally, Dan and James met with Missouri Casket Company, the maker of Amish handmade wood caskets and rocking chairs, and discovered it could benefit from colored glue that complements the naturally darker finish of barn wood. They sent wood samples back to the Roo Glue laboratory, where a team of experts specializes in the development of custom colors for all types of wood adhesives. This type of service and customization of color go beyond the typical offerings of most adhesive companies. What resulted from this visit was a small batch custom tint of Roo Wood® glue that not only met Missouri Casket Company’s custom color needs, but also saves the company nearly $50 per drum. In addition, by switching to Roo Glue, the set time for this process has decreased by approximately five minutes.
