It’s said that nothing succeeds like success. So when Legacy Crafted Cabinets asked SherwinWilliams Industrial Wood Coatings Division and its partner Mirka®, a world leader in innovative abrasives technology, to help with a white wood sanding issue, a success story was in the works. And the story continues to add chapters today.

Legacy Crafted Cabinets is a 50-person shop located in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. It manufactures custom cabinetry and other wood products, and prides itself on providing high-quality cabinetry that satisfies its discerning customers’ style and functionality desires. That’s why the white wood sanding department turned to Sherwin- Williams to deliver a more consistent finish without scratches.

drawer boxes. The ergonomic and lightweight pneumatic orbital sander was ideal for this smaller sanding job. The new sanding system provided a finer finish while saving valuable manufacturing time as well as provided dust-free sanding to reduce airborne dust on the shop floor. The production team liked the Mirka MR-34 orbital sanding system so well that they also are using it on the whitewood for rails and center panels.

Local Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood Division representative Andy McGeehin and technical representative Lori Mountz teamed up with Mirka district manger Sam Adams to work with Legacy management and survey the issue at hand. After testing various grits and sanding attachment systems, the team determined using Mirka Basecut 5” DA paper delivered the finish and improved efficiency the customer hoped to achieve.

AND THAT WAS JUST THE START. Next came the conversion of the company’s wide belt and edge sanding operations to a new system that utilized Mirka XO and SC belts to improve both the process and belt life over what was previously used. Thrilled with the results from the sanding belt conversion, the customer presented a new challenge to the team. Devoted to craftsmanship throughout, Legacy desired a finer feel to the rough sides of drawer boxes. The current technique involved smoothing the sides of the drawer boxes using a sanding sponge, but the finished product didn’t quite meet their quality expectations. To solve this issue, the team developed the following solution: Use a Mirka MR-34 3” x 4” orbital sander with Abranet 400 grit to smooth the rough sides of the ®

ANOTHER CHALLENGE, ANOTHER SOLUTION As part of another cabinet building process, rough machined edges in MDF panels led to variations in the finish as compared to the center panel – the rough grooves tended to soak up finishing materials altering the color. To solve this, the team recommended using Mirka four-sided abrasive sponges to deliver a more consistent surface before finishing. The new process fixed the issue and eliminated the variations in the final appearance. SOMETHING (NOT) IN THE AIR To improve the work environment for employees, the shop is using individual Mirka DEROS dust extractor units connected to random orbital sanders. Since the same random orbital sanders can be used to connect to a central vacuum system, Legacy’s goal to convert all white wood sanding to a central system will be possible and will lead to significant improvement in the shop floor environment. The Sherwin-Williams/Mirka team delivered on Legacy’s requests to improve its finished product while enhancing its working environment and delivering cost savings and manufacturing efficiency. Savings, compared to previous materials used in the sanding process as well as improved methods, is estimated between 10 and 20 percent. Today, the team continues to ensure consistency for Legacy – and stands ready for any and all finishing and sanding challenges.
