When Clint Wood, Sherwin-Williams General Industrial Coatings Sales Representative, first contacted Priefert, the rodeo and ranch equipment manufacturer was working with two different coatings suppliers for touch-up. Clint was eager to share how partnering with Sherwin-Williams provides a level of finishing expertise that would improve product quality, as well as increase efficiency levels of Priefert’s paint application lines. At an onsite visit, Clint learned Priefert was running into roadblocks with its current suppliers, particularly in identifying an enhanced touch-up solution that would ensure consistent color match both on the finishing line and after delivery of products to customers for field applied touch-up. “Clint got the problem resolved immediately,” said Priefert Post Weld Manager Rick Howard. To address the issues, Sherwin-Williams created custom Ready Match Touch-Up aerosol paints with accurate, true-to-factory touch-up results for Priefert to ship to customers. HANGING ON FOR PRODUCTION GAINS After the success of the new touch-up products, and consolidation of the company’s finishing supplies purchases from multiple vendors to Sherwin-Williams, Priefert reached out to Clint with another opportunity to work together. The finishing team knew there was room to paint more products on its finishing line, but they were not sure how to efficiently set up the spacing between parts to enable the powder coatings to reach all angles of the products on the line. Clint and his team, Technical Service Representative Keith Yates and Equipment Specialist Keith Hutchinson, worked with the Sherwin-Williams design engineering team to assess the finishing line and processes. Once a finishing line audit had been conducted, the team saw an opportunity to improve the parts hanging system on Priefert’s finishing line. The Sherwin-Williams team designed a new hanging system that was then brought to life and installed by Priefert Finish Line Supervisor Warren Grissom.
After two successful line trials, the finishing line was up and running as designed. The parts were coated using Sherwin-Williams Powdura® Super Durable TGIC and TGIC-Free Architectural Polyester Powder Coatings, which improved the final appearance and long-term exterior durability of the rodeo and ranch equipment. “The Sherwin-Williams team took our original hanger and made some spacing and angle modifications. Within a couple of months, we saw a significant increase in production and capacity,” said Warren Grissom. “Clint never leaves our facility without first asking if there is anything else he can help us with.” With the new hanging configuration, Priefert has been able to increase throughput by an average of 40 percent across several heavy-duty gate and panel finishing lines, which apply powder coatings to the company’s largest volume products. It also allows for complete coverage of the inside parts of the gates while preventing powder from collecting too heavily on the outside surface. With the improved coverage and even application of the powder coating, testing showed an improvement in the corrosion resistance of the finish. Sherwin-Williams’ and Priefert’s shared commitment to going above and beyond to bring quality products to the customer has proven to be a winning combination.

UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY IN POWDER FINISHING TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY
Business owners have had few options, aside from investing in expensive equipment, estimating the amount of color needed upon request and maintaining inventory. With advancements in technology, professional color matching tools are becoming highly accurate and more affordable.
