ION

IS NEVER FINISHED

Wood manufacturing requires a specific knowledge base to perfect. The industry relies on the expertise of experienced woodworkers and finishers to get the job done right. However, a recent study by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte found nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will need to be filled in the next decade. It is estimated the gap in skillset will result in 2 million of those jobs going unfilled. Many wood product manufacturers will be faced with the challenge of finding qualified employees. Baby Boomers are retiring from their jobs faster than young workers can replace them, which can be attributed to a lack of relevant skills among workers and a gradual decline of technical education programs. A strong economy with low unemployment also means fewer jobseekers. The industry’s dilemma lies in this labor shortage and lack of high-quality next generation woodworkers and finishers. A group of motivated educators from two Colorado school districts set out to answer the call for a skilled future workforce. By gathering generous industry support, they were able to bring their idea to life. TURNING A DREAM INTO REALITY The educators sought out Dean Mattson, a cabinet maker who gained national attention for developing a program to teach wood manufacturing to 3,000 Oregon high school students, with the prospect of opening a national training center in Colorado Springs.

Dean helped the educators approach wood industry manufacturers and equipment suppliers to assist in building their curriculum and filling the center with the latest machinery, tools and technology,

which students will encounter in the workplace one day. Gaining more than 80 worldwide partners, Dean and his team turned an abandoned school building into a lean manufacturing teaching facility with $3 million in donated machinery. FINISHING TOUCHES While the center had space for three learning labs, only two were designated to specific manufacturing fields. One is a wood manufacturing lab and the other a construction lab. Dean was weighing his options for the focus of the third lab when he received a call from Les Smith, Market Development Manager, Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood Coatings.

After learning of the school’s vision to elevate the talent of the wood manufacturing workforce, Sherwin-Williams committed to a 10-year, $300,000 investment to supply finishes and training to the school. Moreover, Les worked with Sherwin-Williams Equipment and Supplies vendors Mirka, Sames Kremlin and Roo Glue to bring in finishing line and spray booth equipment and tools. Supplying industry-leading technology and training allows the students to get experience with equipment and techniques that are being used in the field. “Getting to learn on the latest machinery from potential future employers has given me more confidence, knowing someone is in my corner,” said graduate intern Nicholas Clark. INVESTING IN THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOODWORKERS The 46,000-square-foot Manufacturing Industry Learning Lab (MiLL) opened in August 2017, with hands-on classes for primary and post-secondary students, woodworking and construction industry personnel, and former military members, including those who are a part the Wounded Warrior Project.

Manufacturers can send their employees to the center for training. The MiLL Academy also offers new state-of-the-art cabinet manufacturing curriculum and training for education and industry, and provides teaching certification in Woodwork Career Alliance (WCA). Only a few months into its training and Dean says the school has already received praise from industry partners on students’ skill level. With so much promise and strong commitment from the industry, the future looks bright for the students and their eventual employers. Learn more at themillco.org.

“We are excited for the students to learn finishing the Sherwin-Williams way. Together, the MiLL and Sherwin-Williams are setting the curriculum for the future of wood finishing.” Dean Mattson, Founder & President of the MiLL

TIPS

6 7

Avoid Adhesion Failures Raw wood is often sanded down to an extremely smooth surface prior to application. While the thought is the smoother the grain is to start, the better the finish will look with less coats, this is not always true. In some cases, this creates adhesion failures as the coating has nothing to mechanically bond to. − Todd Steiner, Wood Industry Technical Service Manager
