We continue to see the need for environmentally friendly solutions in the coatings industry. Sherwin-Williams keeps this top of mind when rolling out new products and programs. Electing to do what is right for the planet should not mean compromising on cost and quality. The industry’s green initiative is centered around reducing emissions and energy consumption. To do this, Sherwin-Williams introduced industry-leading waterborne coatings with low solvent content. Consider Duraspar Prime High Speed, a liquid epoxy primer designed to cure at very low temperatures. This product and many others reduce energy consumption while still delivering exceptional durability and corrosion resistance. Our commitment to being environmentally conscious goes beyond the paint can and extends to other areas of the finishing process. In this issue of ProFinisher, you will be introduced to a program offered by Sherwin-Williams and our partner, Nexeo Solutions, to reduce organic solvent use in an economically advantageous way. Through this program, we learned customers who use solvent-borne liquid coatings have waste streams comprised of contaminated solvents. By implementing this new program and making minor adjustments to how solvents are utilized, customers can properly recycle their waste liquid paint and contaminated clean up. This green program is one of the ways that the Sherwin-Williams team is able to partner with you to improve your entire finishing process. Leading chemical distributor Nexeo Solutions prides itself on its capabilities to meet any business challenge, helping streamline solvent use processes while increasing customer profitability. The company’s unique blend philosophy sets it apart from others in the marketplace by offering custom, recycled solvents for cleaning finishing line machinery, equipment and paint application lines. For six years, Nexeo Solutions has partnered with Sherwin-Williams to supply custom blended finishing line cleaning solvents to a large North American cabinet manufacturer. The relationship started in 2012, when Sherwin-Williams Sales Representative Shane Lywak and Facility Manager Rob Sewards were brought in to review the facility’s waste management. The review focused on waste generated from the use of a standard blend of virgin solvents in the paint line cleaning and purging process. The review revealed that the current virgin blend was both costly and negatively impacting the facility’s monthly pollution reports. Sherwin-Williams worked with Nexeo Solutions to find and implement a solution that continues to benefit the customer’s finishing line, bottom line and sustainability efforts.

A CLEAN BREAK FROM VIRGIN SOLVENTS
Shane and Rob engaged the team at Nexeo Solutions to develop a customized blend that would improve the cleaning performance of the paint system. They then conducted testing to ensure the blend not only worked on the facility’s production lines, but also provided optimum clean-up and recyclability. After initially using the custom virgin blend, the material was collected by Nexeo Solutions and stored until enough was available to run through the recycling process. This recycled solvent blend was returned to the facility for use, starting the sustainable closed loop system that continues today. The solvent blend consists only of a defined ratio of virgin solvent and recycled material from this specific finishing line. It is not mixed with waste streams from any other sources, eliminating the concern for potential cross contamination. Nexeo Solutions picks up used solvent material from the facility on a daily basis and delivers it to a local Nexeo Solutions location where it awaits further incoming shipments. Once enough material is collected, it is recycled by Nexeo Solutions. After recycling, Nexeo Solutions blends in virgin solvents and tests the blend to ensure it meets the exact specification to provide optimal performance for the customer, as determined by the Nexeo Solutions team. Every batch is adjusted back to this specification. It is then drummed off and inventoried. A consistent volume, based on the facility’s production, is delivered back to the facility, ensuring ample material to fill the system is always on hand.
The Sherwin-Williams and Nexeo Solutions partnership has allowed the company to recycle wastes and use low HAPS coatings to meet its environmental goals. SAVING MONEY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
At the same time that the manufacturer is enjoying performance improvements from the customized blend of cleaning solvents, the facility is saving money while reducing its environmental impact. Savings were seen immediately after switching to the new blend based on the lower cost of purchasing recycled rather than virgin product. Costs have also stabilized because the manufacturer is paying for the service of recycling its existing solvents instead of purchasing new solvents each time, avoiding the price volatility of the market. Additionally, the facility no longer pays for waste disposal. The recycling process also positively impacts the environmental footprint of the facility and, as a result, its environmental reporting to the government. Its partnership with Sherwin-Williams and Nexeo Solutions has allowed the company to recycle wastes and use low HAPS coatings to meet its environmental goals. As a part of the continuous improvement process, additional changes were made to the custom solvent blend a year and a half after the initial implementation. This created additional cost savings by offsetting ethanol with methanol, which is more affordable. The custom blend of cleaning solvents and recycling process led by Nexeo Solutions has been a winning combination, saving the facility money, improving line cleanliness and reducing the amount of waste generated from the finishing process.
