CUSTOMIZING A HANDCRAFTED FINISH

As an innovative cabinetry company, Benedettini Cabinetry tailors their business to fit the changing needs of their customers through their rebranding efforts and a supplier transition. Benedettini Cabinetry began customizing cabinets in 1999, and continues to use their years of experience to provide handcrafted products to customers. With a focus on high-quality design and craftsmanship, the company understands and emphasizes that cabinets are more than just fixtures to hold up your countertops. Matt Bible, General Manager at Benedettini Cabinetry, describes how their dedication to cabinet details allows them to operate at a higher level than many of their competitors. “We pay a lot of attention to prep work on the front end,” Bible said, which allows the company to consistently customize their products – a pivotal aspect in separating themselves from the competition.

We provide more than coatings. Our complete product finishing solution includes over 10,000 brand-name equipment and supplies to address the entire process, from sanding to shipping. Our dedicated experts also work with a diverse group of suppliers and manufacturers to serve all of your finishing needs, including providing on-site support to help you enhance your line. BRAND SIGNIFICANCE

NEW PRODUCTS, MORE POSSIBILITIES

This past summer, Benedettini Cabinetry rebranded their company and shifted their focus to driving new business and exploring future opportunities. Their fresh look reflects the sleek and modern appearance of their developing European line.

Few businesses run the volume and offer the diverse product lineup Benedettini Cabinetry does. The switch to Sherwin-Williams coatings provided a full support system, as well as new production opportunities for the company.

Even though traditional framed cabinetry was the company’s bread and butter for years, they recently noticed and adapted to changes in the market. Today’s home buyers are more savvy than ever, and are increasingly seeking out non-traditional styles, such as the Europeaninspired frameless look. In response to this demand, Benedettini expanded their business to accommodate the market shift.

Every year, Benedettini Cabinetry sprays thousands of different color combinations. Even before the change in finishing suppliers, many customers brought Sherwin-Williams colors in for color matching. Since the transition, Benedettini can now easily offer custom colors and match finishes that their customers desire, without having to locate another paint store or color chip.

Driving brand recognition was not only important when it came to Benedettini’s updated look, but also for the products they use. In January, the company transitioned to Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood Coatings – a brand many customers already recognized.

Keeping efficient products on hand is a key to satisfying Benedettini’s customers. Their transition to Sherwin-Williams coatings not only impacted customization possibilities, but environmental elements as well. Application of the ULTRA-CURE® solvent borne UV topcoat on their stained products reduced emissions across the board for the cabinetry company.

“Our builders are happy to hear the Sherwin-Williams’ product name,” Bible said. “For us, it’s all about the brand name.” A HANDS-ON APPROACH

There is a common misconception that cabinets made by hand on-site are of a better quality than those manufactured off-site. Benedettini’s high-quality, custom cabinets – factory-designed and built – are handcrafted with unique colors and smooth finishes.

Benedettini Cabinetry's delivery of handcrafted products with opportunities for customization, provides a foundation of support and innovation for their customers.

Benedettini prides itself on having a finish that cannot be replicated in the field. In a market that is beginning to lean more on technology, Benedettini recognizes that a machine cannot generate the same quality of a hand applied finish. The team sprays colors and glazes, wipes down, and sands the products between finish coats – creating custom finishes that are exceptionally handcrafted. “We truly have a hand finish,” Bible said. “This approach gives us the true custom finish we are after.” In order to handle large-scale production, Benedettini Cabinetry optimized their finishes. The application of SHER-WOOD® KEMVAR® Conversion Varnish on the company’s painted products significantly reduced the company’s dry time between coatings. “I can process an order much quicker than a year ago – financially it is the biggest benefit of the transition we’ve made,” Bible said.

“We’ve been excited about the transition and the products we’ve gotten with the Sherwin team,” Bible said. “The service, the technical support, along with the sales support has been tremendous and a great change.” – Matt Bible, General Manager, Benedettini Cabinetry

STEPPING AHEAD OF THE TRENDS WATERBORNE CHALLENGE Sherwin-Williams hosted the Waterborne Challenge, in which participants viewed a variety of panels and tried to determine whether each was finished with a waterborne or solvent-based topcoat. The average score was approximately 50% correct, which means participants struggled to distinguish between waterborne and solventbased coated panels.

Sherwin-Williams’ latest equipment, coatings, and product offerings anticipate market trends and provide solutions buyers seek at the International Woodworking Fair Over 1,000 woodworking vendors from across the globe came together from August 22 – 28 to showcase new technology, materials, and innovations at the International Woodworking Fair (IWF) in Atlanta, Georgia. During the trade show, Sherwin-Williams discussed opportunities and displayed services and solutions for attendees. CUSTOM COLOR The demand for custom products is a trend impacting the woodworking industry. “We’re finding that more and more kitchen cabinet and furniture manufacturers are seeking out ways to create custom color quickly so they can keep up with the growing consumer demand for personalization,” said Nick Bartoszek, Global Marketing Director, The Sherwin-Williams Company.

Sherwin-Williams employees demonstrated how the Color Express™ system and ColorReaderPRO tool help streamline the customization process. The Color Express system encompasses every step of color delivery. The user scans any color with the ColorReaderPRO handheld spectrophotometer to find the closest Sherwin-Williams match. Integration with the dispensing equipment makes that color a reality, taking it from inspiration to tinted product within a matter of minutes.

TIPS

The challenge served as an indicator to how much the performance of waterborne coatings has improved over the years. No longer seen as inferior technology to solvent-based coatings, today’s waterborne products dry faster, are scratch-resistant, and durable. Global Director of Marketing, Sherwin Williams Industrial Wood Coatings Division, Joe Kujawski, suggests three great waterborne products to get started with: SHER-WOOD® 5421W Universal Primer, SHER-WOOD® Water Reducible Wiping Stain, and the SAYERLACK® HYDROPLUS Waterborne Clear topcoat. DESIGN INSPIRATION Another essential feature at the booth was the presence of the Global Color and Design Center (GCDC). The GCDC is a facility where experts track trends and develop proprietary finishes for kitchen cabinets, furniture, architectural building products, flooring, and specialty segments in the wood industry.

During the trade show, the GCDC showcased the Virtual Panel Studio™, an industry-first online tool consisting of 700+ wood panel images. This vetted, digital service “brings the GCDC all around the world for 24/7 inspiration,” said Lauren West, Global Color and Design Manager. Check out the 2019 Industrial Wood Color Forecast in this issue. The GCDC stays one step ahead of the trends, bringing finishes to manufacturers of wood products that will help drive the market.

Contact your Sherwin-Williams Industrial Wood Coatings Sales Representative to learn how the Sherwin-Williams Design Engineering Team can identify and implement efficiency, resource, and process improvements in your finishing operation.

Optimizing Application Settings Most stains are under constant agitation, which causes evaporation or strengthening of a stain. Implement timely color checks throughout the day to guard against this and other mechanical issues that could occur in the paint room with pumps and agitators will improve efficiencies. − Tim Workman, Industrial Wood Marketing Development
