I am a RIBA Part 1 graduate student at University of Nottingham. I am currently working in Hong Kong. I developed my passion on architecture through fashion and textiles design. I enjoy the innovative design integrating with technical strategy through critical observations by focusing on the duality of imagination; from social, cultural and the situatedness of a object or cities. The challenges are phenomenal and I would like to take a further step in architecture.

35 years ago, Hong Kong had the rich and varied culture important legacy and cornerstone that the younger generations can build upon in growing the identity of the city. There are more than five million 6-7 metres long bamboo rods are used every year in the construction industry. This industry drew people into by word of mouth. There are no places which still use bamboo scaffolding like we do in Hong Kong – not even in China. The purpose of the “Pop-Up Theatre” is for talented buskers who may not have the opportunity to be exposed in the public. We hope this pavilion provides a temporary performance space for local artists to display their work and enhance the arts and culture in this district.

Concept Development

This bamboo pavilion is going to concretize the vanishing natural environment in the city centre of Hong Kong. It is an interactive installation that invites the public to reconnect to our nature through all our senses. Visitors may simultaneously view, touch, feel, listen to and scent that bamboo installation within the pavilion. Bamboos interweave to form a firm lattice like flowers blossoming on the exterior of skyscrapers. This installation is going to remind us of bamboos’ inner beauty which has always been ignored. The scaffolding grids are cut into small pieces and combined to form cylinder-shaped “Light-columns”, which the light penetrates through the gaps in between the bamboos.

Drawings Submission

The purpose of the “Pop-Up Theatre is purposely for talented buskers who may not have the opportunity to be exposed in the public, such as the West Kowloon Cultural District which is a huge platform for international famous performers conducting international and multi-cultural events. We hope this pavilion provides a temporary performance space for local artists to display their work and enhance the arts and culture in this district.

After World War II came to an end in 1945, the colonial Hong Kong government issued ad hoc licenses to families of deceased and injured civil servants, allowing them to operate food stalls in public and thereby earn a living. Dai Pai Dong (open-air food stalls) was once a popular traditional roadside diners. Due to the urban renewal streetscapes, the once familiar dining culture are declining and will soon be erased from the urban fabric. This cultural legacy will become a collective memory or even be forgotten. Through this lighting installation, we would like to materialize this intangible cultural heritage and to raise public awareness of the current urban redevelopment in Hong Kong.

2015 Bath, UK Building for Walkers

In the book "Letters from Bath", John Penrose was an 18th century parson from Cornwall. He, travelled to Bath for the Bath water to cure his gout feet. His letters had a valuable record of the transformation of the city’s medical, architectural, social and religious scenes. He clearly described the 18th townscape in its culture, people and architecture through his explorer’s eyes and memories defined by his emotions and comments in each of the places. John Penrose would walk through many pathways and alleyways even though he felt pain on his feet. The Gateway of the Victoria Park and the Royal Avenue has a great connection with three types of people – Long Distance Walker, Locals and Tourists. These three types of people in my building would have the same attitude like John Penrose, how he investigated and explored the true identity and the local stories of Bath through their own eyes and feet.

Letters from Bath - John Penrose

Through John Penrose’s letters, I identified the five journeys that he often takes and his emotions adapted in the new environment. The model is an abstract illustration of the journeys relating to his vision of the destination and confidence in unfamiliar routes. He is walker & an explorer. He enjoys walking around place even though he has the pain on his feet. A lot of 18th century wealthy people also came to Bath only takes sedan chairs to places. There is a strong comparison between John Penrose and those people. He explores his adventures and visits various churches. He visits friends and wonder around the streets. The speculative drawings are illustrating the attractions in the 18th century Bath townscape, leading for the three types of walkers: Long Distance Walkers, Locals and Tourists; defining spaces that they need.

My site is located at the crossroad. It acts as a connection between the Victoria Park and the Royal Avenue. It is the junction between the Formal and Informal of Bath. The site is part of the Long Distance Journey, Cotswold Way which is one of the 15 national trails in UK. During the weekend, a lot of locals would visit the allotment and enjoy the nature within the city as part of John Wood master plan in the 18th century. Tourists would recognize the building from the carpark while they are heading to visit the Crescent and the Circus. Th e

The Crescent use to live with the rich people, show their statues by taking the sedan chair everywhere without putting their feet on ground. Their appetite and the lack of exercise made them very unhealthy. Having my building located in this area give a strong contrast; make them realize the importance of walking.

Advice to Bath. Listen. Bath, and the Voice of an Oracle hear, Nor fancy the Poet in Jest: Alarm’d for all Nature, I bid thee beware Of a fair One that flames in the West.

Car P ark

To recall those lost charms, to thy Fountain she wings, But forbid her to taste it, or lave: For, Woe to the World, shouldst thou grant her thy Springs, And Health be the Fruit of thy Wave. Fullfill’d would the Prophesy rise, (by my Soul) by which poor Mankind must explore, Which declares that the Globe shall be nurnt like a Scroll, That an Angel shall set it on Fire.

The walking rhythm, stepping up, down and around is showing by the levels, bringing the way of city exploration into the building. The long strand gave an easy access to enter the building. Small routes and pathways are extended at different levels for walker’s own choice.

Using the geometry in the surroundings to develop the internal circulation; gyrating motions from bottom to top, for views in the ambiance.

The unique colour variation and texture is very special to copper. The natural aging surfaces make it an attractive design elements. The progression from its natural patina to an ultimate blue-green colour has made it a pleasing material to watch transform over time. It is a reflection how John Penrose was very to Bath and was not able to be familiar to the space. As the time pass by, he would gradually blend in, just like the material blends with the environment.

The Nine Cley Birds

2014 Cley-Next-the-Sea, Norfolk, UK Residential

This housing project includes three families and six elderly houses. Cley was once one of the busiest ports in England during the 17th century. The marshes around Cley are internationally important for their populations of rare breeding and visiting birds. Cley Marshes bird reserve has been in care of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust since 1926. I was inspired by the body-structure of the seasonal birds. I simplified the wing shape and given the impression : the long distance migration birds arrive at the marshes by slowly stretching their wings and prepare to land in this peaceful town for rest and comfort. My project was chosen to exhibit in Cley 14 Contemporary Art exhibition during the Summer 2014. http://www.cleycontemporaryart.org/

University of Macau 2015 - 2016 Hengqin, Macau, China University MOP$1m (£875,000)

The campus of the university of Macau has been moved from Macau to Hengqin in 2009. Due to the fast pace construction, the design on both lobbies, Library and Administrator Building has the lack of excitement to welcome the VIP or guests. Renovate the interior will provide the sense of identity, the harmony between the exterior and interior of architecture to give the presence to the space, influencing from the Macau architecture and the old campus. The design project started on the 26th Nov 2015 and the client would like to have the concept design by 30th Dec 2015; a tight schedule had been raised, parallel to “The Parisian”. Photoshop, AutoCAD, SketchUp and Rhino computer skills was used in this project.
