HOW TO FIND
DESIGN
inspiration Inspiration is subjective—you never really know where you’re going to find the next thing that sparks your interest. Whether you’re intentionally browsing through images on Pinterest or become particularly drawn to the room where your favorite TV couple has their first kiss, you’ll eventually run into something that speaks to you. All you have to do is keep your eyes open. Travel destinations, books, songs or even someone else’s residence can have a certain look that’ll catch your eye. When inspiration does strike, make sure to keep a picture—even if it’s just a mental one. When you see the collection of photos that you feel speaks to your personal style, it’s easy to find the style that you’re attracted to. Keep them in folders—it’s easiest to sort them by room, but if you’re feeling more organized, you can divide them in styles, color palette and themes. More often than not, there’ll be unifying look throughout your collection. You can be attracted to New York City warehousesturned-lofts’ unfinished floors and large windows, or the weathered wood and nautical color palette of West Coast beach houses. Be careful, though, when trying to work with a theme—overdoing could become too kitschy. Instead, take the design elements that you find in most of your photos and take it from there, and always add a bit of yourself into the look. The best-designed rooms have their residents’ personalities somehow infused into them, so make sure yours doesn’t get drowned out.
When researching for furniture and appliances to f ill your home, choose pieces with functionality in mind. Then, bring in textures to add warmth and interest. Finish off with accessories that set the style and show your personality.
WHAT’S YOUR
INTERIOR STYLE?
Integrating your personality into your inspiration board is how you figure out your personal style. There’s no use in being apologetic about what you like—what’s important is finding a way to bring them all together harmoniously, and of course a little restraint. There are several design styles that you can choose from, and a good place to start might be in your wardrobe. Your sense of fashion easily translates into interiors. If your closet is full of maxi dresses and lace details, you’re probably inclined to bohemian. This can translate easily into printed throws and wallpaper, rich colors and vintage-inspired lighting. Black and white classic pieces are monochromatic and minimalist, so bring in furniture with modern shapes, clean lines and neutral tones—a pop of color is always a nice touch, though. Everyone has their own interpretation of style, which is why your personality always comes into play. One person’s Mediterranean isn’t necessarily another’s. You can also combine various styles, taking elements you like from each and putting them together. Industrial and country work well in a concrete-walled living room where quilts are thrown casually on oversized armchairs. Modern colonial has become a favorite combination, and beautifully achieved with classic French furniture shapes in bright neon colors and patterned floors. There are so many ways to bring things together—it’s a matter of knowing when to hold back, and when to let your creativity fly.
33 AB+CD Guide | CWHomeDepot
HOW WILL YOU
USE THE ROOM
?
In the end, though, it’s not all about style. There’s been debate on form over function and the other way around, but it doesn’t have to be one or the other. There are a number of ways to achieve the aesthetic you want without sacrificing its functionality. After all, what’s the point of having a beautiful space when you can’t properly live in it? Once you’ve decided on the style you want, carefully consider your lifestyle and how the room will cater to it. Are you planning to entertain a lot? You might want to get more seating, and arrange the furniture in a way that’s more conducive to socializing. Will there be a little kids running around the house? Avoid having a lot of glass items and pieces with sharp edges. Are you going to have a lot of pets around? Make sure your sofas are upholstered in fabric that easy to clean, and make sure to train your cat to avoid scratching the pieces. Whatever the case, the way you design the room should be mostly dictated by how you plan to use it. You don’t have to sacrifice the aesthetics, but you can make adjustment to make sure you’re comfortable.
34 AB+CD Guide | CWHomeDepot
WHAT DO YOU
HAVE?
In considering your lifestyle for your new place, it’s a good idea to carefully assess the items from your old one. Aside from helping you out on a budget standpoint, your old pieces are a good indication of how you use your space and could continue to be useful, albeit in a different theme. Before you do any shopping, devote some time to going through what you already have. Check out what can work with your new interior style, what pieces need some refurbishing, and which ones you’ve already outgrown. Also, make room for the inevitable pile of sentimental pieces that you’ll find hard to let go. Just pick your battles—the porcelain lamp your parents got you for your college dorm can be relegated to a new corner, the macaroni encrusted tissue box might not belong. Give away those you can do without, or better yet, organize a garage sale. The extra income can go into your decorating budget.
FLOORPLAN
A floorplan helps you figure out where to start before doing the decorating. Examine the room itself—are there any nooks or crevices where you can tuck in a console table or chair? Where are the windows? You can map it out by hand with pen and paper, or use the variety of apps and programs currently available. It’s an easy way to arrange and rearrange the furniture you have in various configurations to find out what’s best for you— without having to actually drag them around.
Note /tip: A good f loor plan can enhance your life, maximize space, light, and airflow, and create a natural flow between rooms.
THE
moodboard
The moodboard isn’t to be confused with your vast collection of photographic inspirations—the moodbaord is an edited version of the images you like. This is the place for all the details: the fabric swatches for curtains, upholstery and the like; the paint samples for the walls and finishings; photos of the actual pieces of furniture and fixtures. Having all the elements you’ve decided on in print and pinned together on a board gives you the chance to see if the items will complement each other or clash completely.
budget Setting a budget for redecorating is incredibly important, considering how easy it is to get caught up in the process. Come up with a list of expenses and sort it by priority, with the bigger items and pieces that’ll eventually become the room’s focal point taking a larger chunk of the budget. Make sure to include a contingency fund— the course of decorating can be very unpredictable, so it helps to have some leeway for whatever can happen. There are plenty of ways to make sure you stay within budget. Compare prices at different stores to find the best deal, or visit vintage furniture stores or bargain shops for items that just need a fresh coat of paint and new fixtures. Purchase the pieces that rank higher in priority so you can figure out how much you have left for the rest later. Most importantly, make sure to keep a running tally. You don’t want to be sitting in your newly decorated room wondering how you ended up spending twice your budget—believe me, it happens.
decorating
SCHEDULE
Figuring out the schedule is tricky—after all, decorating can be highly unpredictable, and that isn’t helpful when trying to strictly follow a schedule. There has to be a balance between sticking to a set calendar, while leaving enough leeway for any unforeseen obstacles. A to-do list is a good way to start. Schedule tasks per week for more realistic deadlines, and to give you and your team an idea of where you should be at every moment of the production process. Although you might want to save on labor and do things by yourself, often it’s worth the extra time and money to let professionals do it. Rushing paint jobs or electrical work will cost you a lot more in the long run—an extra day of work against heavy repairs in the future is definitely a good trade-off. GLOSSARY OF

CONSTRUCTION
TERMS BUILDING CONSTRUCTION Aggregates – Sand and stone may or may not break your bones but mixing these two compounds together will surely produce one strong material called concrete. A material we often see on industrial inspired spaces, it could be top coated with enamel or left with its original face. Apron – No, it’s not the polka dot fabric you find hugging your momma’s waist, it’s also not the denim one you use to cook or bake! This is a trim board often made out of wood or PVC, an Apron is installed beneath a window sill to complete the whole look of a window and create a softer and homey feel.
Astragal – Coming from the Greek - Latin word “vertebra”, the original function of astragals in Architecture was to be used at the top or base of a column or a framing device on furniture pieces. Today, this is a half round molding attached to one of a pair of swinging double doors to close and seal the clearance gap. It is attached where the door strikes or closes. Backfill – A material used to fill-up an excavated hole or area. To backfill means to fill any remaining hollow spaces after placing concrete, brickwork, timber, or pipes in an excavation. The primary function of eaves is to keep the rain water out of the walls. In oriental architecture, eaves become a highly decorated part of the structure often represented by heavy carvings or hand painted patterns. American homes love to provide a bay window seating for extra lounging space. Banquette – No, this is not a form of gathering or party! Although the idea of it being made was inspired by gathering people together, a Banquette is a form of free-standing or built-in upholstered bench often found in diners or restaurants. Bevel – This is a slanted and polished edge detail often used in mirrors, framing, and furniture pieces made of wood, stone, glass, and the like. Bobeche – Pronouced as (Bobesh), this is a glass collar on a candle holder used to catch wax drippings. Butt joint – A kind of woodworking joinery system wherein two pieces of wood are joined together through the use of a nail or screw.
Cabriole leg – A type of wooden furniture leg that resembles an animal’s hip, thigh, or ankle. Cabriole legs curves outward at the knee and is tapered inward at the ankle. Chinoiserie – Say it with me: Chee-nwa-seh-ree. This is a style of art or design that is depicting Asian or Chinese motifs. This became a huge fad in France and England wherein the style is seen on their tea sets and other glasswares. Cove lighting – This is a form of indirect lighting built into a ledge, recessed ceiling, or valences. The light is directed towards the ceiling and goes down to the adjacent walls. Cove lighting is best applied in bedrooms and other areas of the house where mood or accent lighting is encouraged. Eclectic – Could be a type of music, that person you’re sitting with, or even you! This is a design style that utilizes different elements for multiple styles and origins. Basically known as the
marriage of styles, an Eclectic home tends to be fun, vibrant, and dynamic in its own right. Ergonomics – These are products, methods, and equipment designed by the consideration of human behavior, health, and safety. Furniture – If this one poor thing could talk for itself, it would probably say this: “One or more, I am just Furniture. I cringe at the mention of my name with an “S” at the end.” Satin finish – A kind of paint finish that is in the middle of the Matte and Semi-gloss variants. Satin finish is becoming a trend now in Interior Design projects, not only is it beautiful itself but it also conceals away any wall imperfections the Semigloss variants would often expose.
