Black Mass (15)
Bridge of Spies (12A)
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
Gripping real-life drama set during the Cold War, directed by Stephen Spielberg. The Soviet Union has captured U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers’ only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release.
Lady in the Van (12A)
Sunset Song (15)
Miss Shepherd (Maggie Smith) is an eccentric old soul. She spends her time by covering miles in her van, which happens to double up as her home. The neighbourhood are gradually becoming acquainted with her bizarre ways, until eventually one of them – a young writer by the name of Alan Bennett – invites her to park in his driveway, just until she gets something more permanent sorted. Fifteen years later she is still there. Miss Shepherd has become a feature of life in this Camden street, and yet the question remains of whether she will ever move on... Directed by Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys) this charming and hilarious British film is based on Bennett’s real experiences with the lady who lived in a van on his own driveway.
Terence Davies adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1932 novel of the same name. Chris Guthrie is a young woman with plans. Excelling at her schooling and in possession of a burgeoning independent streak, she seems destined for a job in teaching. But family life has its own pull and her religious father exerts a formidable force on his brood, as well as on her mother whose body he treats as both refuge and battleground. As the constellation of her family shifts around her and romance comes calling, Chris grows into womanhood just as the First World War begins to devastate a generation.
This film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

The Dressmaker (TBC)
Brooklyn (12A)
After many years working as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, Tilly Dunnage, a beautiful and talented misfit, returns home to the tiny middle-ofnowhere town of Dungatar to right the wrongs of the past. She begins a relationship with childhood friend Teddy McSwiney and, armed with her sewing machine and incredible sense of style, she transforms the women of the town and in so doing gets sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.
Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.
Spectre (12A)
Suffragette (12A)
The 24th instalment in the James Bond franchise, starring Daniel Craig and directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall). A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE and learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks (Chrisoph Waltz).
Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meryl Streep, lead the cast of a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality. Wife and working mother Maud’s (Mulligan) life is changed forever when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement, galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Streep). When increasingly aggressive police action forces Maud and her dedicated fellow suffragettes underground, they engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the authorities, who are shocked as the women’s civil disobedience escalates and sparks debate across the nation.

BEOGA with CHRIS STOUT & CATRIONA MCKAY present VALHALLA SATURDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2016, 7.30pm Mareel £18
Valhalla is a new suite of work composed by Beoga, along with Chris Stout and Catriona McKay. The artists will undertake a five-day residency commissioned by The MAC to jointly create new music. The compositions will marry the links between the music of Shetland and the music of Ireland. The residency will result in a series of performances to showcase the collaboration in The MAC and other venues across Ireland and Shetland. Beoga are a leading force on the music scene in Northern Ireland, and are one of the most prolific bands on the touring circuit. McKay and Stout have performed regularly with Sean Og Graham of Beoga with the group Fiddlers Bid. This led to the idea of a cross national show incorporating new material and trademark compositions. As well as a 20 minute program of new compositions, the collaboration seeks to explore and develop the music from Seavaigers (featuring the music of Sally Beamish and Chris Stout & Catriona McKay, July 2014) and Beoga’s albums The Incident (Grammy shortlisted album in 2009) and How To Tune A Fish (2012).

It’s a Wonderful Life (U)
Santa Claus: The Movie (U)
An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed. It’s a Wonderful Life is a beloved Christmas movie, but it’s so much more. A moving examination of the worth of a single man’s life, it’s dark and bright, full of passion, despair and joy. Very sweet and with moments that can surprise you even after you’ve seen it dozens of times, a great film for the festive season.
This classic festive favourite tells the story of a master toymaker who discovers a magical kingdom of elves in the North Pole and becomes Santa Claus. But when Santa’s eager-to-please elf Patch (Dudley Moore) leaves the North Pole for the big streets of New York City, he becomes mixed up with a dastardly toy tycoon’s plans to take over Christmas. And so begins Santa’s adventure - to rescue his faithful elf and to save Christmas!
Arthur Christmas (U)
Home Alone (PG)
Aardman Animations’ comic family fantasy opens on Christmas night, where Arthur, Santa’s youngest son, is on a mission to save Christmas for one little girl. When one of the girl’s presents go missing, Arthur rounds up his reindeer, fuels up his sledge and sets out into the December sky with Grandsanta and elf Byrony to deliver the present before the morning. Arthur Christmas is sure to warm the cockles of the hearts of adults and children across the land this winter.
Chris Columbus’ much-loved caper stars Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, a tough little tyke who’s expecting someone to come down his chimney - but not Santa Claus. When his family rush off on holiday, Kevin gets left behind. Now he’s got little to do but decorate the home for Christmas. And not with sprigs of holly, but with an array of booby-traps devised to foil a pair of burglars who discover that he is indeed Home Alone when they target the house for a robbery.
Elf (PG)
The Muppet Christmas Carol (U)
Will Ferrell stars as Buddy, a misfit elf who grows to be three times the size of his adopted family. Determined to seek out his roots, he journeys to New York to meet his Scrooge-like father and cynical ten-year-old stepbrother who doesn’t believe in Santa. Worst of all, everyone seems to have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. But using his simple elf ways, Buddy sets out to singlehandedly win over his family and save Christmas and find his true place in the world.
The Muppets take on Charles Dickens’ christmas classic in a madcap retelling of A Christmas Carol. Michael Caine stars as the miserly Scrooge, visited by three ghosts in an attempt to change his ways before it is too late. In order to save his soul he must learn to love, share, and most importantly to embrace others at Christmas. Start your christmas season with this firm Mareel family favourite.

Jewels (U) Of Mice and Men (12A)
SUNDAY 13 DECEMBER, 1:30pm
SUNDAY 6 DECEMBER, 1:30pm
A Mareel festive tradition – treat yourself to a night at the Ballet this Christmas. This opulent triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue. It celebrates the cities and dance schools of Paris, New York and St Petersburg, each bound to its own precious stone. With this first abstract ballet, Balanchine built a homage of captivating beauty to the dance schools that had forged his style – Paris, New York and St Petersburg – each represented by a contrasting jewel – emerald, ruby and diamond. Jewels offers a unique opportunity to enjoy Balanchine’s visually captivating work, as the Bolshoi is the only company authorised by the Balanchine Trust to film and broadcast his masterpiece.

> Shetland Arts Case Study
SCREEN We retained our ‘Look North’ strand of screenings, with Village at the End of the World and Bjornoya (Bear Island) selling out – no co-incidence that they are both films about remote island living. The main week saw education screenings at Mareel and at schools in Fair Isle and Brae, whilst a hugely enjoyable animation workshop took place at Symbister School in Whalsay. Regular collaborations with local groups keep the festival rooted in the community and this year we worked with Amnesty International Shetland and Alzheimer’s Scotland to bring two world class documentaries – The Look of Silence and Alive Inside to Mareel, both followed by Q&A sessions.
Screenplay, Shetland Arts’ annual film festival has been gathering local and national profile over the past nine years, so this year’s festival had a lot of expectations to live up to. Curated by internationally renowned film critic Mark Kermode, film historian Linda Ruth Williams and festival director Kathy Hubbard, Screenplay ’15 set out to meet Shetland Arts’ objectives of entertaining, informing and developing audiences, giving Shetland residents access to some of the best screen professionals working today and providing a platform for local film makers, whilst still looking for innovation, as well as simply celebrating film as an art form.
This year’s special guests were a joy to work with – director Carol Morley, producer Cairo Cannon, writer/ actor/director Mark Gatiss and television and film actress Lindsay Duncan all undertook extremely well attended screenings with Q&A or introductory talks and spent a lot of time talking to audience members informally afterwards. Short films were to the fore as usual, and this year saw some excellent home-made productions, including the ever-sold-out Home Made screening as well as Film Poems and Portraits by local poet and film maker Roseanne Watt. Kicking off with a celebratory brass band walk-down from the Market Cross, we went straight into our first innovation of 2015 which was a live-dubbed film for children, with actors at the rear of the cinema reading the subtitles off the screen as they came up – enormous fun, and introducing children to the world of international film that they rarely get to visit. Other highlights of the first weekend included a silent film with piano accompaniment, a screening of the hit dialect theatre show, Tell Wis, and the chance to meet Shetland-connected musician Candida Doyle during a Q&A session after seeing Pulp – A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets.
Along with a packed and rambunctious Festival Film Quiz and a final talk by Mark Kermode about one of his favourite films, Silent Running, we filled ten days with a varied programme which attracted nearly a thousand extra main audience (3815 to 2014’s 2908) and a healthy education and outreach audience in community halls in Fair Isle and Bressay, and a care home for the elderly in Brae. We also met an increasing number of individuals who had travelled to Shetland specifically for the festival, all of them having heard of Screenplay through Mark Kermode’s tireless promotion of it over the years. The tenth anniversary next year will have to be something special indeed.
