Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Bonhoga, The Garrison Theatre & Mareel. We also develop and promote a year round programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, & dance events. Our vision is for a creative, connected Shetland that values art and culture and the transformative impact it can have on everyone’s life; a Shetland that nurtures and celebrates its own creative talents and is open to all cultures and lifestyles; a Shetland where no one feels isolated and where culture is core to ensuring the economic and social wellbeing of all its residents. Supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082). Registered office: Mareel, Lerwick, ZE1 0WQ
Between the beginning of April and the end of June we presented or hosted over eleven hundred concerts, film screenings and exhibition days which were enjoyed by over forty seven thousand people. We supported over six hundred practitioners with performance or learning opportunities and delivered nearly five hundred development sessions. All of this happens as part of our mission to contribute to making Shetland the fantastic place we all know it to be. Looking forward to August we must mention Screenplay 2018 which kicks off on Friday 24th. The festivals directors, Kathy Hubbard, Mark Kermode and Linda Ruth Williams have excelled themselves this year with a great lineup of films and guests. The programme will be published at the end of July and I am sure you will all be excited by what is on offer. Those of you who were fortunate enough to see George MacKay at last years Screenplay will I have no doubt be looking forward to his new film The Secret of Marrowbone. August also sees the release of the next installment of the Mission Impossible films as well as Ant Man and the Wasp. We will also be showing the much requested André Rieu’s Maastricht Concert: Amore, My Tribute to Love.
Our very successful platform for local makers at Bonhoga, ShetlandMade, will be on its third iteration, featuring Julie Williamson, Bill Brown, Helen Robertson, Margaret Hamilton and Morwenna Garrick and Bonhoga Cafe will be hosting an exhibition from the Contemporary Textile Degree Course at Shetland College. I hope you enjoy the sunshine and the creativity and culture that is on offer.

Summer Dance Intensive
Twice Grammy-Nominated Americana / country star Iris DeMent will visit Shetland following her headlining appearance alongside Rodney Crowell at the ‘Southern Fried Festival’ in Perth – her only Scottish date bar that appearance.
Shetland Arts’ week-long Summer Dance Intensive will give young people the opportunity to explore a range of dance skills with Shetland-born dancer and choreographer Kathryn Spence. Participants will learn contemporary dance technique and use this to devise, create and edit a short dance film and choreograph a piece for the Dance Showcase on Friday 3rd August. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the creative process and to have your ideas heard and put into dance.
Perhaps best known through her classic song ‘Our Town’, from her equally classic debut album ‘Infamous Angel’, DeMent has released six successful and hugely acclaimed albums to date, together with prominent appearances on albums by the likes of Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Nanci Griffiths and various other country legends.

I’m With Her I’m With Her is Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan. An impromptu show in 2014 at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO, sparked the formation of I’m With Her and sent the trio touring the world together the next year. Along the way, I’m With Her formed a special, family-like chemistry, garnering acclaim for their unique blend of instrumental interplay combined with their indelible harmonies, as the New York Times describes, “... that could be sweetly ethereal, or as tightly in tandem as country sibling teams like the Everly Brothers, or as hearty as mountain gospel.” Their debut album, See You Around, was recorded in Box, England, with Ethan Johns at Real World Studios. O’Donovan previously wooed audiences at Shetland Folk Festival with her band Crooked Still, while Jarosz and her trio performed to a sold out Mareel auditorium in January 2017. Watkins, who will visit the islands for the first time, first made her name as fiddler and vocalist with Nickel Creek (also featuring mandolin wizard Chris Thile and Sara’s brother Sean Watkins). The Lone Bellow
Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham
Returning to Shetland after an acclaimed sold-out show at Mareel in January 2016, The Lone Bellow burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut in 2013. The Brooklyn-based band quickly became known for their transcendent harmonies, serious musicianship and raucous live performance — a reputation that earned them their rabid fan base. It’s been three years since the band’s victorious Then Came The Morning was released. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, the album was nominated for an Americana Music Award.
What more can you say about these two stellar musicians, now embarking on their 31st year of working together. Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham have established themselves as the epitome of excellence in the world of traditional music and have been described by Mike Russell as “probably the best traditional musicians you are ever likely to hear”.
“Support from melodic local guitar-pop foursome Trookers.”
With their musical magic and quick-witted humour they will pull your emotional strings one moment and have you falling off the seat with laughter the next.
Please note: over 14s only and under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

BambinO
Callum Beattie
BambinO is a first operatic adventure for six to 18-month-olds. A bird, called Uccellina, discovers an egg. The egg grows to a magical size. It hatches, revealing a baby bird, called Pulcino, who takes Uccellina for his mother. He explores the world. Uccellina tells Pulcino of the sky and its wonders, and that it is his destiny to fly the nest. Although saddened at the thought of being separated, they are soon caught up in the excitement of his imminent flight. Ready to take to the skies, the birds sing a final duet of farewell. Pulcino takes flight and soars among the clouds, and Uccellina ponders his journey.
Callum Beattie has been hard at music for almost half his life, making his own chances, taking chances and, for sure, being a chancer. The Edinburghborn musician has progressed from “mangled” versions of Wonderwall and bad gigs in pubs straight out of Trainspotting, via stage invasions in front of 80,000 REM fans and backstage blags with Kaiser Chiefs, to where he is now: a singer-songwriter with a punchy, rousing, emotive and gloriously catchy debut album that lit up 2017. And lit it up in stereo.

In 1948, Canadian sociologist Erving Goffman came to Unst, told everyone he was there to study the economy but, instead, studied everyone there. His research ended up in his massive bestseller The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, changing the game for sociology. Seventy years later, a cast of Shetland youth have teamed up with performance company Mammalian Diving Reflex to apply Goffman’s insights to Unstfest, UK’s most northerly festival. The Presentation of Unst in Everyday Life presents their findings. Let us present a study of you to you, hopefully with a song or two. BLOOMING YOUTH
Bonhoga at Mareel
AS PART OF THE YEAR OF YOUNG PEOPLE BIG TAKEOVER
Courtney Marie Andrews Award-winning American singer songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews will round off a UK solo tour including a show at London’s Union Chapel with a gig at Mareel at the end of 2018. The 27 year old singer has released acclaimed albums including “Honest Life” (2016) and this year’s “May Your Kindness Remain”, and promises to play “lots of new songs, old songs, and in-between songs”. In January she won international artist of the year at the UK Americana Awards, while this September she is up for emerging artist of the year at Nashville’s prestigious Americana Music Honours and Awards. Wednesday 12 December, 7.30pm Mareel £18 / £15
We want to turn the Flower Park into an even more magical place than it already is, we’re going to add giant flowers and mushrooms and beetles and butterflies, all made from fabric and bruck, all made by young people. We have made up some free kits (available at Mareel and Bonhoga) to get things underway but people are free to make whatever they like to fit the guidelines.
pavilion in the run up to the exhibition, on 12 and 19 August. The deadline for all entries is 1 September.
For older bairns we are going to turn the adjoining tennis court into a brain with an installation that develops over the Big Takeover weekend. Artist co-lab Kristi Cumming and Maya Darrell Hewins are overseeing the whole project and asking the question, “What’s going on in your teenage brain?”
Find more information download the instructions and templates online at www.shetlandarts.org/our-work/ exhibitions/blooming-youth.
Show us your thoughts, ideas, hopes and fears in the form of an artwork for the tennis-court-brain. Work can be in any medium that will survive outdoors. You could build a sculpture, paint a picture, write and record a song, make a film or anything else you can think of… there’s no size restriction as long as it can fold up into a car! Kristi and Maya will be hosting two public workshops in the Flower Park
All this creativity is combined with an Instagram competition responding in any way to the idea of ‘Blooming Youth’. Tag @shetland_arts for a chance to have your image(s) exhibited as part of the project.
The retail space in Mareel features an ever-changing collection of design led gifts, stationery, cards and books as well as a small selection of local music CD’s.
