First there was an opportunity… then there was a betrayal. Twenty years have gone by. Much has changed but just as much remains the same. Mark Renton returns to the only place he can ever call home, and they are waiting for him: Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie. Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction, and mortal danger…
Frank Zappa – self-taught composer, musician, bandleader, producer and independent thinker – first transcribed his avant-garde compositions onto paper at fourteen. He began to write lyrics in his early twenties. And upon the 1966 release of his debut album, Freak Out! (with the Mothers of Invention), he swiftly became the most quotable voice of dissent in popular music. A subtle, skillful montage constructed solely from historic footage, Eat That Question is an energetic celebration of this outspoken maestro.

Hacksaw Ridge (12A)
Tom Hanks stars as a modern American hero in this riveting true life drama. On 15 January 2009, Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger became a national hero when the world witnessed him pilot his disabled plane onto the waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being championed for his bravery and skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy both his reputation and his career.
Mel Gibson’s first film as director since 2006, Hacksaw Ridge is a gripping and moving drama based on the story of Desmond Doss, who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, single-handedly evacuated casualties from behind enemy lines, saving 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. Doss was the first conscientious objector to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

One summer's evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst's house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the appearance of two sinister younger men. Also starring Owen Teale and Damien Molony, don’t miss this glorious revival of Pinter’s comic classic.

Here the Montagues and Capulets act like modern gangs with vendettas and blood feuds, and the swords have become guns, but the language remains the same and the tragedy of the star-crossed lovers Juliet (Claire Danes) and Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) is as poignant as ever.

WEDNESDAY 8 FEBRUARY, 7:30pm Mareel £16 Amythyst Kiah is a Southern Gothic, alt-country, singer / songwriter based out of Johnson City, Tennessee - where she has been hailed as a ‘powerhouse vocalist.’ Not only are her influences eclectic but they span the decades, drawing heavily on ‘old-time’ music and blues, but equally country music from the 50’s to the 70’s as well. Kiah has opened for the likes of Tim O’ Brien in the States and is now making significant impact across the USA at major venues, events and festivals such as the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, plus likewise in the UK via events such as the Cambridge Folk Festival, Southern Fried Festival and the SummerTyne Americana Festival. She first appeared in Shetland two years ago, making a huge impression on her audience at that time. Expect her to do likewise on this occasion too!! “Amythyst Kiah is going to be famous…she will remind you what it is to love live music.” – ‘No Depression.’

GRAMMY-nominated and highly gifted singer and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Jarosz, from Austin, Texas, will bring her trio show to Shetland early in 2017. Signed to a record deal aged just 16, she has built up a major reputation in the contemporary folk, Americana and roots scene. In addition to playing mandolin, octave mandolin, guitar and banjo, Jarosz is an expressive and distinctive vocalist and a hugely accomplished songwriter. She is a regular on A Prairie Home Companion TV show, where she is part of the new house band alongside host Chris Thile and other members of the Punch Brothers. This year she has shared a stage with the likes of Paul Simon and Jack White. Jarosz boasts multiple Grammy nominations including two for her last album Build Me Up From Bones, while her current release Undercurrent is her first since graduating with honours from the New England Conservatory of Music. It features cameos and co-writes with collaborators including Crooked Still’s Aoife O’Donovan and Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins, with whom she has toured under the name ‘I’m With Her’.

Watch as this experienced funny-man creates laughs out of the chaos of his own life and the uncertain world that surrounds it. Phill became a familiar face as team captain on BBC2's pop quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks in 1996, which went on to run for 19 years. Aside from that and live stand up shows all over the UK, he also appears as a regular guest on QI (BBC2), and in 2012 returned to television stand-up comedy with an appearance on Live at the Apollo (BBC1), while over on BBC Radio 4 Phill is a regular panellist on the award winning show I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

The set-up is very informal, with artists encouraged to bring their own materials and the poses led by the model. The assassination of John F Kennedy in 1963 was one of those moments that defined a generation. That this handsome, charismatic leader with a beautiful wife and two young children could have his life ended so brutally defied comprehension. With Jackie, Pablo LarraĂn makes a brave choice by retelling this story solely through the eyes of Jacqueline Kennedy, casting Natalie Portman in a lead performance that is deeply intelligent and carefully measured.
Rude, withdrawn and temperamental, Boston handyman Lee Chandler is clearly a troubled man. When he receives news of the sudden death of his beloved brother, Lee sets off for his Massachusetts home town of Manchester-by-the Sea. Here he learns that he has become guardian of his 16-year-old nephew, and is forced to confront his troubled past and the tragic events that forced him to leave.

Annette Bening leads a stellar cast in this beautifully observed charmer.

The Birth of a Nation (15) Set against the antebellum South, this powerful drama follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner accepts an offer to use Nat's preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hope of leading his people to freedom.
Toni Erdmann (15) At last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Toni Erdmann took everyone by surprise and became the unexpected hit of the festival, with sold out screenings and queues around the block. The story follows an ambitious young businesswoman and her relationship with her eccentric, practical joke loving father. Saying much more would be a spoiler: it’s full of surprises, very warm and touching and frequently hilarious.
Paterson (15) Every day is much the same for bus driver and secret poet Paterson. Once his shift has finished, he goes home and has dinner with his wife Laura, before taking their dog down to the local bar and enjoying one beer. Jim Jarmusch’s charming and quietly profound character study astutely observes the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.
Christine (15) Christine, always the smartest person in the room at her local Florida news station, feels like she is destined for bigger things, but is constantly butting heads with her boss, who pushes for juicier stories that will drive up ratings. As Christine’s mental state declines, and she is increasingly plagued by self-doubt and feelings of unrequited love for a colleague, events take a dark and shocking turn.
My Feral Heart (12A) Luke, an independent young man with Down’s syndrome, is grieving the loss of his elderly mother when he is forced to move into a care home. Initially despondent about his new situation, his spirits are raised when he finds a way to sneak out and explore the local countryside. And when he meets a girl in need of his help, his desire to connect and protect another person gives him a new lease of life.

Our prices vary depending on the day and time of the performance, and the type of screening. When booking you will be asked to choose between two different ticket types: adult or concession.
