Assassin's Creed (12A)
La La Land (12A)
Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) is a dangerous criminal scheduled for execution – but his life is saved when he’s rescued by the mysterious Abstergo Industries. Under the instruction of scientist Sophia Rikkin, Callum is forced to take part in the Animus Project, whereby the company taps into his genetic memories. Soon Callum is reliving the life of his 15th century ancestor Aguilar, an Assassin during the time of the Spanish Inquisition.
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star in this enchanting, bittersweet musical. In contemporary Los Angeles, coffee shop worker Mia aspires to escape her humdrum life and become a celebrated playwright. Meanwhile across town, musician Sebastian refuses to give up on his dream of owning his own jazz club. When these two opposites meet, a sweet relationship develops – but the course of true love refuses to run smooth. Can they make it last?
Silence (15)
xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (12A)
Celebrated director Martin Scorsese returns with his long-awaited passion project: a sweeping and emotional adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s acclaimed novel. In the 17th century, two young Portugese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor, Father Cristovao Ferreira. On a journey to preach the Gospel and the word of Christ, they are faced with appalling persecution in an unfamiliar land.
The third explosive chapter of the blockbuster franchise that redefined the spy thriller finds extreme athlete turned government operative Xander Cage coming out of self-imposed exile and on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang, in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon. Recruiting an all-new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of world governments.

Trainspotting (18)
T2: Trainspotting (TBC)
A special screening of Danny Boyle’s blistering, hugely influential cult classic, in advance of the release of T2 on 27 January. In an underbelly of Edinburgh that the city fathers never dreamt of, Mark Renton and his so-called friends – a group of losers, liars, psychos and drug addicts – throw themselves into the nothingness of heroin and search the murky depths at bottom of the bottle, financing their habits through lives of petty crime.
First there was an opportunity… then there was a betrayal. Twenty years have gone by. Much has changed but just as much remains the same. Mark Renton returns to the only place he can ever call home, and they are waiting for him: Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie. Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction, and mortal danger…
Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words (15) Frank Zappa – self-taught composer, musician, bandleader, producer and independent thinker – first transcribed his avant-garde compositions onto paper at fourteen. He began to write lyrics in his early twenties. And upon the 1966 release of his debut
album, Freak Out! (with the Mothers of Invention), he swiftly became the most quotable voice of dissent in popular music. A subtle, skillful montage constructed solely from historic footage, Eat That Question is an energetic celebration of this outspoken maestro.

HAROLD PINTER
SUNDAY 5 FEBRUARY - Mareel £12/£10 Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s No Man's Land, filmed live for cinemas at Wyndham’s Theatre, London. One summer's evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst's house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the appearance of two sinister younger men. Also starring Owen Teale and Damien Molony, don’t miss this glorious revival of Pinter’s comic classic.

30 JulY - 6 AUGUST 2017 > Documentary
A bold and exciting feature documentary that encapsulates a momentous period in the history of Russia and the Russian Avant-Garde.
Stalin’s rise to power marked the close of this momentous period, yet the Russian Avant-Garde continues to exert a lasting influence over art movements up to the present day. Revolution: New Art for a New World confirms this, exploring the fascination that these colourful paintings, inventive sculptures and propaganda posters retain over the modern consciousness 100 years on.
Drawing on the collections of major Russian institutions, contributions from contemporary artists, curators and performers, and personal testimony from the descendants of those involved, the film tells the stories of artists like Chagall, Kandinsky, Malevich and others – pioneers who flourished in response to the Utopian challenge of building a New Art for a New World, only to be broken by implacable authority after 15 short years.

Donnie Darko (15) A 15th anniversary re-release of Richard Kelly’s cult classic. Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a bright and charming high-school student who also has a dark and willfully eccentric side. Donnie is visited on occasion by Frank, a monstrous six-foot rabbit that only Donnie can see, who often urges him to perform dangerous and destructive pranks, and who predicts the end of the world…
Chi-Raq (15) Spike Lee’s dazzling, rage-fuelled, hip-hop musical repurposes Aristophanes’ Lysistrata – a comedy about a Greek heroine who leads a sex-strike to prevent war – setting it in Chicago’s South Side. Chi-Raq is the leader of the Spartans and the lover of foxy, feisty Lysistrata. The Spartans are at war with rival gang, the Trojans, led by Cyclops. When an 11-year-old-girl is killed in the crossfire of a gang battle, Lysistrata decides to take action.
The Darkest Universe (15) An often hilarious, always poignant tale of troubled sibling relationships, alienation and aliens. When his sister Alice, her boyfriend Toby and their 40-foot narrowboat disappear somewhere on the canals of London, Zac sets out to find them. The Darkest Universe is a brilliantly distinctive, emotive piece of comedic filmmaking, featuring some of Britain’s most exciting young actors.
You’ve Been Trumped Too (PG) As thousands of journalists hang on every Donald Trump utterance, wondering what he might say next, Director Anthony Baxter (You've Been Trumped, A Dangerous Game) explores the consequences of his actions. You've Been Trumped Too is a unique and remarkable document of an historic election, and a timeless tale of the unlikely encounter between a saltof-the-earth Scottish widow and one of the planet's richest and most famous people.
The Birth of a Nation (15) Set against the antebellum South, this powerful drama follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner accepts an offer to use Nat's preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hope of leading his people to freedom.
