Artist Talk:
Toby Paterson Thursday 9 March
Toby Paterson is one of Scotland’s leading contemporary artists. His paintings, reliefs and constructions explore the relationship between abstraction and reality, often derived from encounters with architecture and the built environment. This illustrated talk by the artist will explore his work ahead of the opening of his exhibition at Bonhoga and commission for the café bar at Mareel.

20th Century Women (15)
Patriot's Day (15)
During the summer of 1979, a Santa Barbara single mother and boarding house landlady decides the best way she can parent her teenage son is to enlist her young tenants – a quirky punk photographer, a mellow handyman and her son's shrewd best friend – to serve as role models in a changing world. Annette Bening leads a stellar cast in this beautifully observed charmer.
The director and star of Deepwater Horizon reunite for this powerful story of a community’s courage in the face of terror. In the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again.

Logan (15)
Lost In France (15)
Wolverine encounters a remarkable young girl in this explosive sequel from Marvel Studios. It’s the year 2024. The mutant population has shrunk significantly and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan, whose power to self-heal is dwindling, works as a chauffeur and takes care of the ailing Professor X. One day, a stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting a long time for this particular girl to appear…
An informative and entertaining new documentary exploring the rise of Scotland's independent music scene in the '90s. Featuring The Delgados, Bis, Mogwai, Arab Strap, Franz Ferdinand and other seminal acts, this is an intimate film exploring friendship, creativity and music. On the journey, we revisit a defining, chaotic trip early in the musicians' careers, re-staging a concert in Brittany that connects the characters in life (and on stage) for the first time in many years.

Jackie (15)
Renton returns home after 20 years, in this hugely anticipated sequel to Danny Boyle’s cult hit. First there was an opportunity… then there was a betrayal. Twenty years have gone by. Much has changed but just as much remains the same. Mark Renton returns to the only place he can ever call home, and they are waiting for him: Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie. Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction, and mortal danger…
The assassination of John F Kennedy in 1963 was one of those moments that defined a generation. That this handsome, charismatic leader with a beautiful wife and two young children could have his life ended so brutally defied comprehension. With Jackie, Pablo Larraín makes a brave choice by retelling this story solely through the eyes of Jacqueline Kennedy, casting Natalie Portman in a lead performance that is deeply intelligent and carefully measured.
Rings (15)
John Wick: Chapter 2 (15)
The possessed videotape returns to terrify a new cast in the third spine-chilling Ring movie. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a ‘movie within the movie’ that no one has ever seen before...
Keanu Reeves' legendary hitman takes on the world's deadliest killers in this thrill-packed sequel. John Wick isn't having much luck staying retired. A former associate of the unstoppable hitman is planning to take over the shadowy international assassins' guild, and someone has 'opened an account' on John himself. It's not long before the bullets start flying in this explosive sequel to the 2014 hit that reignited Keanu Reeves' action career.

Kong: Skull Island (12A)
Ghost in the Shell (TBC)
The great ape roars back onto the screen in this spectacular reboot of the classic monster movie. In the 1970s a group of scientists, soldiers and government agents make the epic journey to a remote, uncharted Pacific island. But its natural beauty is soon revealed to harbour terrifying secrets in the form of enormous ape King Kong, revered by the locals as a god. But there are even deadlier threats to be faced if the team want to make it off the island alive...
A dazzling sci-fi action movie, based on a Japanese animation from 1995 and starring Scarlett Johansson. Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, a one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

Prevenge (15)
Life, Animated (PG)
A pitch black British comedy from the somewhat twisted mind of Alice (Sightseers) Lowe. Ruth is a pregnant woman on a killing spree. Her misanthropic unborn baby dictates her actions, coaching her to lure and ultimately kill her unsuspecting victims. Struggling with her conscience, loneliness, and a strange strain of prepartum madness, Ruth must ultimately choose between redemption and destruction… Gruesome and darkly hilarious, the film was also written and directed by its star, who was actually pregnant during filming!
A special screening of this brilliant, moving documentary, to mark World Autism Awareness Day, Sunday 2 April. Nominated in the Best Documentary category at this year’s Oscars, Life, Animated tells the inspirational story of Owen Suskind, who, as a child, was unable to speak until he discovered a unique way to communicate. By immersing himself in the world of animated Disney films, Owen found the tools he needed to understand and connect with the world around him. After making remarkable progress, Owen is now an adolescent striving for independence, but what does the world hold for an autistic boy who relies on Disney sidekicks in the face of adversity?

La La Land (12A)
Fences (12A)
In contemporary Los Angeles, coffee shop worker Mia aspires to become a celebrated actress and playwright. Meanwhile across town, musician Sebastian refuses to give up on his dream of owning his own jazz club. When these two opposites meet, a sweet relationship develops – but the course of true love refuses to run smooth.
In 1950s Pittsburgh, garbage collector Troy Maxson, bitter that baseball's colour barrier was only broken after his own heyday in the Negro Leagues, is prone to taking out his frustrations on his loved ones. Denzel Washington and co-star Viola Davis are both Oscarnominated for their outstanding performances in this moving drama.
Hacksaw Ridge (15)
Lion (PG)
Hacksaw Ridge is a gripping and moving drama based on the story of Desmond Doss, who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, single-handedly evacuated casualties from behind enemy lines, saving 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. Doss was the first conscientious objector to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Saroo, a five-year-old Indian boy, falls asleep while hiding on a train and ends up thousands of kilometres away from home and family. Saroo must learn to survive alone, before he is eventually adopted by an Australian couple. Twentyfive years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination and Google Earth, he sets out in search of his lost family and first home.
Hidden Figures (PG)
Manchester by the Sea (15)
Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of three brilliant African-American women working at NASA in the early 1960s, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. Their stunning achievement restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and crossed gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
Rude, withdrawn and temperamental, Boston handyman Lee Chandler is clearly a troubled man. When he receives news of the sudden death of his beloved brother, Lee sets off for his Massachusetts home town of Manchester-bythe Sea. Here he learns that he has become guardian of his 16-year-old nephew, and is forced to confront his troubled past and the tragic events that forced him to leave.

Funny Face (U) SUNDAY 12 MARCH One of several vintage musicals that inspired La La Land (observant viewers will have spotted Emma Stone with a big bunch of balloons in the Paris fantasy sequence), Funny Face is an absolute charmer. Fred Astaire plays fashion photographer Dick Avery, sent out by his boss to find a new ‘face’. It doesn't take Dick long to discover Jo (Audrey Hepburn), an owlish Greenwich Village bookstore clerk. Dick whisks the wide-eyed girl off to Paris for a fashion shoot, but she has more serious things on her mind than clothes... Both stars are on terrific form, and the Gershwin tunes include the title song, ‘S'wonderful’, ‘How Long Has This Been Going On’ and ‘He Loves and She Loves’.

I, Claude Monet (U) SUNDAY 19 MARCH Based on over 2500 letters written by the artist, I, Claude Monet reveals new insight into the man who was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Monet’s life story is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression and loneliness. However, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his Giverny garden, his humour, insight and love of life sustained him. Shot on location throughout Europe at the very spots he painted, I, Claude Monet is a fresh and intimate cinematic exploration of some of the most loved and iconic scenes in western art.

> Scorsese / De Niro Season
SCREENF CUS
A four-film celebration of one of the most productive and critically acclaimed actor/director collaborations in cinema history. Martin Scorsese has so far directed Robert De Niro in eight feature films, with a ninth, The Irishman, co-starring Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel and Joe Pesci, due to start shooting early this year.
ALL FOUR FILMS FOR THE PRICE OF THREE!
(Tickets are subject to availability and must all be purchased at the same time.)
Taxi Driver (18)
Raging Bull (18)
A landmark of 70s American cinema, Taxi Driver is an alarmingly plausible character study of Vietnam vet Travis Bickle (De Niro), an alienated insomniac who spends his nights driving a New York cab. He has nothing but contempt for the ‘scum’ he sees all around him, and becomes obsessed with ‘rescuing’ a 12-yearold runaway turned prostitute, turning himself into a one-man killing machine as he prepares for a bloody crusade.
Brilliantly directed by Scorsese and featuring a magnificent Oscar-winning performance by De Niro – who gained nearly 50 pounds to play the older, fatter LaMotta – Raging Bull is one of the most powerful boxing films ever made. Based on the autobiography of middleweight champion Jake LaMotta, the film chronicles his life from 1941 until the mid-1960s, and is chiefly concerned with the irrational and violent LaMotta's struggle to find peace within himself.
The King of Comedy (PG)
Goodfellas (18)
Scorsese’s chilling black comedy, even more relevant now than when it was released. De Niro is tragic, goofy and sinister as Rupert Pupkin, living in his parents' basement and imagining himself the greatest comic in the world. His dream is to appear on his hero Jerry Langford’s talk show, but he'll have none of that nonsense about learning his craft and working his way up the ladder of success – he wants it now…
Goodfellas is Scorsese at the very height of his powers, directing with a dynamic urgency and a bravura use of camera, music and outstanding performers. Ray Liotta stars as Henry Hill, a young man drawn into the swaggering glamour and violence of a mobster’s life, mentored by the lethally paranoid Jimmy Conway (De Niro). The knockout support cast includes Lorraine Bracco and an Oscar-winning Joe Pesci as the volatile Tommy DeVito.

Christine (15)
Moonlight (15)
Christine, always the smartest person in the room at her local Florida news station, feels like she is destined for bigger things, but is constantly butting heads with her boss, who pushes for juicier stories that will drive up ratings. As Christine’s mental state declines, events take a dark and shocking turn.
Nominated for eight awards at this year’s Oscars, Moonlight is the tender, heartbreaking story of a young man's struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality.
The Innocents (Les Innocentes) (15) It's Only the End of the World (15) A compelling and affecting drama that places women’s experiences of war very much at its centre. Mathilde, a young doctor working with the French Red Cross in Poland in the winter of 1945, is entreated by a desperate nun to make a secret visit to a nearby abbey. She arrives to find a young sister in labour, and a group of women traumatised by the actions of the ‘liberating’ Russian army.
Winner of the Grand Prix at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, this taut chamber piece follows terminally ill writer Louis, who returns home to break the news of his impending demise to his estranged family. Once there, old wounds and deep seated frustrations surface as Louis struggles to rekindle relationships and articulate the real reason for his visit.
Denial (12A)
Dancer (12A)
Essential viewing in these post-truth times, this compelling courtroom drama recounts historian Deborah E Lipstadt's legal battle for historical truth against David Irving, who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. Under the English legal system, the burden of proof is on the accused, therefore it was up to Lipstadt to prove that the Holocaust occurred.
Blessed with astonishing power and poise, Sergei Polunin took the dance world by storm and became the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever principal. But at the peak of his success, aged 25, he walked away, driven to the brink of self-destruction by stardom. This captivating documentary, featuring a wealth of archive footage and interviews, traces Polunin’s incredible journey.
