The Bairns Shetland Open
Photography - on the theme of ‘Industry’ The bi-annual Shetland Open welcomes entries from amateur, professional and student artists and craftmakers, aged 18 and over, who are linked to Shetland by birth, education or residency. In the intervening year the category winners are given the opportunity to exhibit in a group show. The four winners from 2014 – Susan Timmins, Ana Arnett, Cheryl Jamieson and Fionn Arnett – have chosen to create new work using the iconic marine engineering firm Malakoff Ltd. as their starting point.
Gallery Seven exhibitions are presented in the main gallery each year featuring local, national and international contemporary visual art and craft. Gallery talks, activities and workshops specific to the programme are organised throughout the year at Bonhoga, while other activities such as life drawing take place in blocks, either at Mareel or The Garrison.
Shop In addition to the main gallery there are also dedicated spaces for the exhibition and sale of art and craft in the lower gallery and shop. Collections of prints, textiles, jewellery and ceramics are featured by artists, designers and makers both from Shetland and across the UK. The shop also stocks a wide selection of design-led goods and cards.
Café In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn the Mill Café is a popular spot all year round for locals and visitors alike. The menu features locallysourced produce and specialities, all prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the café caters for those with special dietary requirements.
Bonhoga Gallery is situated in the Weisdale Mill, a 19th century meal and barley mill converted to a gallery, shop and café in 1994.
Cheryl Jamieson, Glansin Glass Bonhoga Café, 16 - 17 May At the first of two MYM events this year at Bonhoga, Cheryl will demonstrate the processes behind creating her work. There will also be an opportunity to buy Cheryl’s work, which is currently being featured in the upper and lower gallery as part of the group show Malakoff.

FILM The Water Diviner (15) Russell Crowe is The Water Diviner, a farmer with a talent for finding water in arid landscapes. After the Great War, he travels to Gallipoli to find his missing sons. Believed to have been killed in the battle there, Connor (Crowe) simply wants to bring their bodies home for burial. But soon it becomes apparent that they may be alive - and that the Turkish military would prefer them not to be found. The Water Diviner is Russell Crowe’s (Gladiator, Noah) directorial debut, and also stars Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion) and Jai Courtney (A Good Day To Die Hard).
Far from the Madding Crowd (12A)
Dark Horse (PG) The remarkable story of Jan Vokes, a barmaid in a former mining village in Wales, who bred a racehorse on her allotment that went on to compete in the Grand National. After Welsh barmaid Jan Vokes hears a regular talk about the time he owned a share of a racehorse, she has a brainwave and, together with her husband, buys a thoroughbred mare for £300, which they then pair with an ageing stallion. The resulting foal is raised on a slagheap allotment by the villagers of Cefn Fforest, who all contribute for its upkeep. Named Dream Alliance, it goes onto shock the racing establishment by competing in the Grand National. This documentary, about the villagers from one of the poorest mining valleys in Wales taking on the privileged racing world, is an inspirational and emotional story about pursuing your dreams.
Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, Far From The Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors; Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schonaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love, as well as the human ability to overcome hardship through resilience and perseverance.

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD
The Age of Adaline (Cert: TBC) After miraculously remaining 29 years old for almost eight decades, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents (Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker) threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.
Still Alice (12A) Julianne Moore stars in this heartbreaking and inspiring tale of one woman’s struggle to stay connected to her identity in the battle against dementia. Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested.
A Royal Night Out (12A) On May 8th 1945, everything changed. The Allies won the war, and VE Day (Victory in Europe) was celebrated in the streets of London. Behind the palace walls, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret can only watch while the people of the city enjoy their victory. After some serious persuasion, their parents – the King and Queen – let them out for the night, but only under close supervision. It’s not long before the plan goes awry, and Elizabeth finds herself separated from her sister.

I like both these pieces well enough but I am partial to the fuzzy one. It is a little bit more different from other pieces as the lower pattern is used by quite a few knitters. I also liked her mohair piece we used at Bonhoga....in some ways I might have liked that pattern better. I might prefer this fuzzy piece better if it is stitched into the round template....although with the lenses I guess it won’t make any difference? You could really see the hairyness. I think we should work with this mohair one otherwise use a previous piece. Another Day, Another Time
(12A) SHOWING IN CELEBRATION OF SHETLAND FOLK FESTIVAL 2015 A concert inspired by the Coen Brothers’ film, Inside Llewyn Davis, set in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music scene, featuring live performaces of the film’s music, as well as songs from the early 1960s. Performers include the Avett Brothers, Joan Baez, Dave Rawlings Machine, Rhiannon Giddens, Lake Street Dive, Colin Meloy, The Milk Carton Kids, Marcus Mumford, PUNCH BROTHERS (performing live at Mareel, see above), Patti Smith, Willie Watson, Gillian Welch, and Jack White, as well as the star of the film Oscar Isaac.
Lambert & Stamp (15) Aspiring filmmakers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp were studio assistants at Shepperton in the early ’60s. Inspired by the burgeoning youth culture, they hoped to make a truthful and authentic documentary about a rock band – except they didn’t have a rock band. But then they found The Who, a proto-Mod foursome of creative misfits, and persuaded the group to let them become their managers. Despite their having zero management experience, Lambert and Stamp’s considerable tenacity and very real talent proved crucial to the rise of one of the greatest rock acts of all time.

KIDS’ FILMS Cinderella (U) Inspired by the classic fairy tale, Cinderella brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece. Cinderella follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Ella welcomes her new stepmother and daughters into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (U) Life is dandy in Bikini Bottom for SpongeBob Squarepants and his friends Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs and Sandy. However, when the top-secret recipe for Krabby Patties is stolen, SpongeBob finds that he must join forces with perpetual adversary Plankton and come ashore to battle a fiendish pirate named Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas), who has his own plans for the delicious delicacies.
Moomins on the Riviera (U)
Two By Two (U) It’s the end of the world. A flood is coming. Luckily for Dave and his son Finny, a couple of clumsy Nestrians, an Ark has been built to save all animals. But as it turns out, Nestrians aren’t allowed. Sneaking on board with the involuntary help of Hazel and her daughter Leah, two Grymps, they think they’re safe. Until the curious kids fall off the Ark. Now Finny and Leah struggle to survive the flood and hungry predators attempt to reach the top of a mountain, while Dave and Hazel must put aside their differences, turn the Ark around and save their kids. It’s definitely not going to be smooth sailing.
In search of adventures, the three Moomins, Snorkmaiden and Little My set sail for the French Riviera. After a perilous journey, they reach their dream destination where Snorkmaiden is dazzled by the attentions of a playboy leaving Moomin consumed by jealousy. When Moominpappa befriends an aristocrat and adopts the name ‘de Moomin’, an exasperated Moominmamma retreats to the calm of their trusty old boat, to wait for her family to come to their senses and to remember their motto: “Live in peace, plant potatoes and dream.”
FANTASY FILM From Disney comes two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird’s riveting, mystery adventure Tomorrowland, starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as Tomorrowland. What they must do there changes the world - and them - forever.
