SATURDAY 31 OCTOBER 7.30pm
Mareel £16 / £14 Following the critical acclaim of his award-winning collaborative project with Welsh harpist Catrin Finch, the extraordinary Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita comes to Mareel as part of his 2015 UK tour.
Seckou has graced the international stage since 1996, earning worldwide acclaim for his kora playing and appearing with a host of fellow artists including Salif Keita, Yossou N’Dour, Miriam Makeba and Neil Finn.
Variously described as a ‘griot (praise singer), composer, djembe master, virtuoso and pioneer’, Seckou is a rare type of musician, seated in tradition whilst constantly pushing the boundaries of his art.
His last two albums Miro and The Silimbo Passage hit No.1 in the European world music charts, and Clychau Dibon, the fruit of his collaboration with Finch, won fRoots Critics Poll Album of The Year 2013, Songlines Magazine Best Cross Cultural Collaboration 2014, and two BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominations.
A true master of the kora - a 22 stringed West African harp - Seckou, from the Casamance area of Southern Senegal, was a childhood prodigy, born of a line of griots and kings. Cissokho, his mother’s family name, gave life to his talent; Keita, his father’s, gave him royal blood.
Seckou is joined by Gwyneth Glyn as support artist. Poet, writer and singer of songs, Gwyneth comes from Cricieth in North Wales and explores her own folk heritage in her mother-tongue.

Milly has a high-flying job and lives in a beautiful townhouse with husband Kit and their two kids. Crimson Peak (15)
Brooklyn (12A)
From the imagination of director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim) comes a supernatural mystery starring Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers), Jessica Chastain (A Most Violent Year), Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim). When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman (Wasikowska) is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak.
Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

Anne Downie’s play is about emigration, independence and coming home. Maggie - a woman in her late 70s returning to Scotland after half a century in the US - ruminates on what it means to be away for most of her life. “Funny, when you look back from over there, it’s kind of on freeze - frame. But everybody else fast forwards. Nothing stays the same”. Maggie’s four terrible sisters fight over the money she has made abroad. Her life in the US has long been a repository for their dreams, a fantastical counterpoint to their own disappointments, she too has only a dream of what life in Scotland might be like. With her best friend Willy, Maya buzzes out into the meadow on an exhilarating adventure of self-discovery. While most bees believe that other insects should be feared, Maya can’t help but make friends with Flip the charismatic and eccentric grasshopper, Kurt the dung beetle and even Sting, a young hornet. But when the Queen’s royal jelly is stolen, it will take Maya and all of her bug buddies to figure out who did it and how to save the day!

Storyteller in Residence for Shetland Primary Schools In September 2015, Shetland Arts in partnership with SIC Creative Links ran a storytelling Residency in Primary Schools throughout Shetland. The residency was also supported by The Scottish Book Trust via the Live Literature Funding which they manage. This year the Storyteller in residence was Renita Boyle who stayed in the Booth in Scalloway and visited eleven schools: Ollaberry, Scalloway, Sound, Skerries, Tingwall, Nesting, Burravoe, Cunningsburgh, Dunrossness, Hamnavoe and Whiteness. She worked with age groups from early years up to primary 7 and delivered 15 sessions, engaging with a total of 714 bairns and 48 staff. Renita’s sessions involved a mixture of singing and storytelling and a high degree of pupil participation which also included spin off arts and creative writing activities. In preparing for the residency, Renita contacted each school prior to my arrival and asked them how best she could work with them to support or enhance their curriculum. As a result, each school had a truly personalised experience from which to further build on throughout the year. Renita’s work was emphatically successful and met with great enthusiasm by both staff and pupils in every school she visitied. In the words of one tearful teacher, ‘I have never in my life heard anyone [a story teller] tell a story. Thank you for such a great gift.’ This residency was the ninth in a series of annual residencies Shetland Arts have run in partnership with Creative Links, for primary schools in Shetland. These began in September 2007 with a residency run by Debi Gliori, They have included residencies delivered by poets Adrian Mitchell, Christine De Luca, Chrissie Gittins and Ron Butlin and storytellers Ian Stephen and Ruth Kirkpatrick.
