WELCOME TO MAREEL CINEMA This leaflet contains details of most of the films you can expect to see at Mareel this month. Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of cinema programming, some details may be subject to change.
CINEMA TICKETS Our prices vary depending on the day and time of the performance, and the type of screening. When booking you will be asked to choose between two different ticket types: adult or concession. Concessions include children aged up to 15 years old (those aged 16 and above must buy adult tickets), students (must produce valid ID), seniors (aged 60+), and people with disabilities. Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded once purchased. Customers are responsible for checking that they have booked the correct tickets at time of purchase as mistakes cannot be rectified at a later date. Only in the event of a screening being cancelled will your ticket be refunded.

THE YOUNG AND PRODIGIOUS T.S. SPIVET (3D & 2D) On sale now Ten-year-old T.S. Spivet lives on a Montana ranch with his blissfully eccentric family, whose matriarch (Helena Bonham Carter) is overly preoccupied with collecting beetles. T.S. himself is a science prodigy who unexpectedly wins an award from the Smithsonian for his perpetual motion machine, prompting him to abscond to Washington aboard a freight train. His adventures en route, and his celebrity status once there, provide the bulk of the film’s alternately comical, touching and sharply observed comments on human frailties. In the wrong hands this might have been a mawkish enterprise, but gifted writer-director JeanPierre Jeunet (Amelie) invests it with his hallmark idiosyncrasies and visual panache; and the cast, headed by the remarkable Kyle Catlett as T.S. and Judy Davis as a conniving Smithsonian executive, are spot on.
WALKING ON SUNSHINE On sale now Set to the greatest hits of the 1980s, Walking on Sunshine is a feel-good musical. After a whirlwind romance, Maddie, fresh from a long term relationship, is preparing to marry gorgeous Raf and has invited her sister Taylor to the wedding in Italy. Unbeknownst to Maddie, however, Raf is Taylor’s ex-holiday flame, and the love of her life... and that is just one of the setbacks on their road to happily ever after! The musical features 80s pop classics such as Human League’s ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’, Madonna’s ‘Holiday’, Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, and Wham’s ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’ to name but a few.

FRANK BELLE On sale now Belle is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mabatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar’s son bent on change who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.
On sale now Acclaimed Irish director Lenny Abrahamson delivers an offbeat comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (Michael Fassbender), a musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head, and his terrifying bandmate Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Written by Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan (The Men Who Stare at Goats), Frank is based on the memoir by Jon Ronson. It is a fictional story loosely inspired by Frank Sidebottom, the persona of cult musician and comedy legend Chris Sievey, as well as other outsider musicians like Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (3D & 2D) On sale now In a scintillatingly imaginative adaptation of one of Marvel’s most popular storylines, the original X-Men unite with the stars of 2011’s prequel First Class to thwart the Sentinels - an army of mutant-killing robots. Kicking off with Wolverine going back in time to stop Mystique from killing the Sentinels’ leader, thus averting a ruinous war, the sparky relationships between the older and younger characters - especially Stewart and McAvoy as the two Xaviers - add an entertaining dimension to the most visually thrilling X-Men episode yet.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS On sale now Girl meets boy, girl likes boy. Boy professes love, girl compares self to grenade… It’s safe to say that this isn’t your usual teen romance! Aspiring inventor Cade Yeager and his teenage daughter Tessa accidentally discover the wise old robot Optimus Prime, setting the stage for the mother and father of all battles between the Autobots and the revitalised Decepticons, in which an ancient race of dinosaur-like automata play a pivotal role. Ensuring awesome visual drama, director Michael Bay returns to the franchise he created, but with a cast of new characters including Stanley Tucci as a scheming robot designer, Kelsey Grammer as a corrupt government official, and Jack Reynor as Tessa’s boyfriend – who, being a racing driver, comes in mighty handy.

Juliette Binoche gives a mesmerising performance as Auguste Rodin’s protege (and later mistress), and sister of the Christian/mystic poet Paul Claudel. Inspired by the correspondence between Paul and Camille, writer/ director Bruno Dumont focuses on Camille Claudel’s struggle to find understanding and recognition as an artist - and the moments before her brother’s visit while she is confined to a mental institution. Shot in a real psychiatric asylum, Bruno Dumont brings together a supporting cast comprised of real-life patients and their actual nurses that, alongside Binoche, create an emotionally intense ensemble - and a rare cinematic experience. While the camera rarely ventures outside of her prison’s thick walls, the story of Camille Claudel’s 29-year confinement is in itself a tale of defiance against social norms - and a testament to the power of creativity and fortitude.

This sequel to 2011’s game-changing Rise of the Planet of the Apes finds the majestic Caesar (reprised by Andy Serkis) leading his fellow highly evolved simians against a band of survivors of a virus that all but wiped out humankind 15 years earlier. The ensuing struggle will determine who ultimately rules the planet. Using the latest stop-motion technology, innovative young director Matt Reeves guarantees that this new incarnation of the popular primate saga is as engrossing as ever. Also new to the project is Gary Oldman as the pugnacious leader of the humans, who include Keri Russell and Kodi Smit-McPhee. As well as Serkis, Terry Notary returns as Caesar’s best pal Rocket, while Judy Greer joins up as his wife Cornelia.

As the day goes on Oscar realises that change is not going to come easily and as he and Sophina celebrate the New Year and a fresh start, one truly shocking, tragedy shakes his community - and the entire United States - to its very core.

Now Agnes must take on the Irish establishment - with a little help from Buster Brady’s troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourette’s Syndrome!

MOOMIN AND MIDSUMMER MADNESS Showing from: Fri 25 July Tickets on sale: Wed 16 July To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tove Jansson, artist, writer, and creator of the Moomins, we will be showing this classic Moomins film. At the height of summer a volcanic eruption causes a flood in the Moomin Valley. The water rises higher and higher in the Moomins’ home, forcing the family to take refuge in a strange house that floats by. The unusual lifeboat turns out to be a theatre which has been set adrift. Moominpapa begins to write a play for the others to put on, but as midsummer’s eve approaches the family gets separated. Will Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden be reunited with the others in time to perform the play?
Showing from: Fri 25 July Tickets on sale: Wed 16 July The Coen Brothers’ celebration of 1960s folk music in their film Inside Llewyn Davis inspired the concert Another Day, Another Time. Produced by T Bone Burnett, who also produced the film’s soundtrack, and held in New York City’s Town Hall, the concert features live performances of the film’s music, as well as songs from the early 1960s. Some of the greatest folk musicians (Avett Brothers, Joan Baez, Dave Rawlings Machine, Rhiannon Giddens, Lake Street Dive, Colin Meloy, The Milk Carton Kids, Marcus Mumford, Punch Brothers, Patti Smith, Willie Watson, Gillian Welch, and Jack White) and the star of Inside Llewyn Davis Oscar Isaac assembled for one unique evening. Featuring interviews with the musicians and behind the scenes footage while they’re rehearsing for the concert, Another Day, Another Time gives an insight on the role folk music plays for them.

Their neighbourhood is being destroyed by a highway construction project that is forcing their families to move away. But just two days before they must part ways, the boys find a cryptic signal has infected their phones. Convinced something bigger is going on and looking for one final adventure together, they set off to trace the messages to their source and discover something beyond their wildest imaginations: hiding in the darkness is a mysterious being, stranded on Earth, and wanted by the government. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY SKYLIGHT Showing on: Thu 31 July Tickets on sale: Wed 25 June Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan feature in the highly anticipated West End production of David Hare’s Skylight, directed by Stephen Daldry, and recorded at London’s West End by National Theatre Encore. On a bitterly cold London evening, schoolteacher Kyra Hollis (Carey Mulligan) receives an unexpected visit from her former lover, Tom Sergeant (Bill Nighy), a successful and charismatic restaurateur whose wife has recently died. As the evening progresses, the two attempt to rekindle their once passionate relationship only to find themselves locked in a dangerous battle of opposing ideologies and mutual desires. Skylight is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry, who directed the sell-out West End production of The Audience with Helen Mirren, which was also shown in cinemas across the UK. Skylight was originally produced at the National Theatre in 1995, before transferring to the West End and Broadway, and won an Olivier Award for Best Play. £16 / £13
