Nothing But A Man
The Stuart Hall Project
Showing from: Fri 18 Oct
Showing from: Fri 25 Oct
Tickets on sale: Tue 15 Oct
Tickets on sale: Tue 22 Oct
Showing as part of Black History Month. A landmark of American cinema, this uniquely truthful depiction of black life in early 1960s Alabama rightly won great acclaim. Though it then sank into relative obscurity, a recent restoration by the Library of Congress has again made its many virtues gloriously apparent. When railroad labourer Duff (Ivan Dixon) meets teacher Josie (Abbey Lincoln), he decides it’s time to settle down to marriage and a factory job. Trouble is, he’s expected to tolerate white bosses who, wittingly or not, are unfailingly racist, and Duff has his pride. This was reputedly Malcolm X’s favourite film and it provides persuasive insights into how social conditions can influence not only relationships but notions of masculinity, responsibility and resistance, so that it still feels surprisingly modern and all too relevant.
Showing as part of Black History Month. Highly acclaimed, this new film from award-winning documentarian John Akomfrah is a sensitive, emotionally charged portrait of cultural theorist Stuart Hall. A founding figure of contemporary cultural studies - and one of the most inspiring voices of the post-war Left - Stuart Hall’s resounding and ongoing influence on British intellectual life commenced soon after he emigrated from Jamaica in 1951. Combining extensive archival imagery - television excerpts, home movies, family photos - with specially filmed material and a personally mixed Miles Davis soundtrack, Akomfrah’s filmmaking approach matches the agility of Hall’s intellect, its intimate play with memory, identity and scholarly impulse traversing the changing historical landscape of the second half of the 20th century.

Le Week-End Showing from: Fri 25 Oct Tickets on sale: Tue 22 Oct A married couple (Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan) revisit Paris to revitalise their marriage, and run into an old friend (Jeff Goldblum) who acts as a catalyst for things to come. Le Week-end is a funny and poignant story about the nature of love and commitment where husband and wife yearn to recapture their youthful fearlessness, lack of responsibility and idealism.
A new restoration of F. W. Murnau’s legendary silent cinema horror classic Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922) - the earliest adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Few films have had a more profound and lasting impact on the horror genre than Murnau’s prime example of German Expressionism, directed to evoke unsettling chills with a strong visual appeal. The film features symphonic lighting, rhythmic editing and horror imagery that has been copied endlessly ever since. The most celebrated sequence – Orlock climbing the stairs to Ellen’s boudoir, his menacing outline casting terrifying wall shadows – remains unparalleled in the horror hall of fame.
Tickets on sale: Tue 22 Oct A perfect Halloween film for all the family! Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world’s most famous monsters - Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more - to celebrate his daughter Mavis’ 118th birthday. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem - but his world could come crashing down when a human stumbles on the hotel for the first time and takes a shine to Mavis…

Frankenstein
STARRING BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH & JONNY LEE MILLER. DIRECTED BY DANNY BOYLE. 2 screenings of Mary Shelley’s classic tale with the lead actors alternating roles. Sunday 03 November, 3pm With Benedict Cumberbatch as Frankenstein & Jonny Lee Miller as his creation. Price: £15/£13 per show or £26* for both shows, plus a free drink for each screening. National Theatre Live’s 2011 broadcast of Frankenstein returns to cinemas as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Frankenstein enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre, and went on to win awards including the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Oscar-winner Danny Boyle directs a sensational production with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.
