Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

The Lone Ranger

elysium

Showing from: Mon 09 Sept

Showing from: Mon 09 Sept

Showing from: Mon 09 Sept

Tickets on sale: Tue 03 Sept

Tickets on sale: Tue 03 Sept

The director and star of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise march forward in time to update the legend of The Lone Ranger, with Johnny Depp playing the character Tonto. Introduced as a washed-up sideshow oddity, Tonto is asked to explain how John Reid transmuted into the wrong-righting masked hero, and his subsequent account forms the basis of this beautifully realised film. It embraces many staggering set pieces, kicking off with bandits derailing a train transporting their notorious leader to the gallows. Arnie Hammer (The Social Network) is suitably upstanding as the Ranger/Reid, whose past is nonetheless revealed as less noble than had been imagined.

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Tickets on sale: Tue 03 Sept Steve Coogan’s famous local radio DJ / one time talk show host Alan Partridge is one of the UK’s mostloved comedy characters, and he’s coming to the cinema screen in this summer’s unmissable British comedy Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa. When Alan’s radio station, North Norfolk Digital, is taken over by a new media conglomerate, it sets in motion a chain of events which see Alan having to work with the police to defuse a potentially violent siege. Will Alan talk round disgruntled colleague Pat Farrell? Will there be shots fired in anger? Will Alan become a public hero or simply another footnote in the history of broadcasting?

lovelace Showing from: Mon 09 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 03 Sept

RED 2 Showing from: Mon 09 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 03 Sept He was once one of the CIA’s most eminent agents, but the (still) retired Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) is living a quiet, but unfulfilled life when he’s forced to reunite with his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global mission to track down a missing nuclear device, code name Nightshade. Pursued by relentless assassins, power-hungry government officials and with heavily-armed terrorists hot on their trail, Moses along with his close associates - the pessimistic and paranoid Marvin (John Malkovich) and crack-shot Victoria (Helen Mirren) along with his intense yet passionate girlfriend Sarah (MaryLouise Parker) - must travel across Europe desperately searching for the deadly weapon and keeping it from falling into the wrong hands.

In 1972 Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried). Escaping a strict religious family, Linda married strip club owner Chuck Traynor (Peter Sasgaard). The film’s first half, which tracks Linda’s life from her teens to the making of Deep Throat, has a breezy, almost light-hearted feel; Sarsgaard plays Traynor as an attractive rogue, the garish colours of the early 70s are amusingly represented, and the more humorous, farcical scenes in Deep Throat are duly captured. Then comes an abrupt shift of tone. Lovelace is seen passing a polygraph test listing her husband’s abuses. Some of the scenes already shown are re-enacted, showing the real Traynor in context. The second time around he is a scary, violent character and it is demonstrated that, far from being a willing star, Linda was actually a victim of abuse.

blancanieves Showing from: Mon 09 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 03 Sept Silent film with subtitles. Once upon a time there was a little girl who had never known her mother. She learned the art of her father, a famous bullfighter, but was hated by her evil stepmother. One day she ran away with a troupe of dwarves, and became a legend. Set in southern Spain in the 1920s, and based on the fairy tale Snow White, the film’s director Pablo Berger describes it as a “love letter to European silent films.” The film won ten Goya Awards including Best Film at the 27th Goya Awards.

5

RUSH Showing from: Fri 13 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 10 Sept Set against the glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.

Planes Showing from: Fri 13 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 10 Sept For those who missed it the first time round... From high above the world of Cars flies Planes, Disney’s animated action-packed comedic adventure starring Dusty, a big-hearted, fast-flying crop duster who dreams of competing in the most exhilarating around-the-world air race in history. There are only a couple of not-so-small problems, Dusty is not exactly built for racing and he also happens to be afraid of heights. Despite his fear and with encouragement from his mentor, a naval aviator named Skipper, Dusty narrowly qualifies for the big competition. Dusty’s sportsmanship and speed begin to rattle the defending champ of the race circuit, Ripslinger, who will stop at nothing to see Dusty fail. When disaster strikes during the climax of the final race, Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test. With the support of friends old and new, Dusty reaches heights he never dreamed possible and in the process, gives a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

m for Mississippi: a Road Trip through the Birthplace of Blues Showing from: Fri 13 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 10 Sept Everyone knows the blues came from Mississippi. Here’s an update: They never left. This documentary takes audiences on a wild ride through the heart of Mississippi’s current blues scene - from sundrenched cotton fields to whiskeysoaked juke joints. Following two self-proclaimed blues fanatics, Jeff Konkel and Roger Stolle, on a weeklong road trip across the state, M for Mississippi explores the thriving underbelly of a dying American art form in the land where it began. Using exclusive interviews and all-new musical performances, the film captures the proverbial “real deal” in its home where it is most comfortable and authentic.

about time Showing from: Fri 13 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 10 Sept With a touch of Groundhog Day and a smidgen of Sliding Doors, the new film from Richard Curtis (Notting Hill, Love Actually) is that rare thing: a romantic sci-fi comedy. Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) learns from his father (Bill Nighy) that the men of the family can travel through time, and although this doesn’t extend to changing history, Tim determines to find a new girlfriend and make the world a better place. Neither ambition proves easy to accomplish, but after moving from Cornwall to train as a lawyer in London he eventually meets the gorgeous but diffident Mary (Rachel McAdams). They fall in love, but a supernatural glitch means their initial encounter keeps repeating itself and goes no further. Curtis’ ingenious script and a great ensemble cast carry us entertainingly through the conundrums.

7

only god forgives Showing from: Fri 20 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 17 Sept Julian (Ryan Gosling) runs a Thai boxing club in Bangkok as a front for a drugs operation. He has everything he wants for and is respected in the criminal underworld though, deep inside, he feels empty. When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang - the Angel of Vengeance (Vithaya Pansringarm). Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand. Julian’s mother Jenna (Kristin Scott Thomas) - the head of a powerful criminal organization - arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’. Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release... but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.

The Wall Showing from: Fri 20 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 17 Sept German language film with English subtitles. Martina Gedeck stars in a contemporary female Robinson Crusoe story. Based on Marlen Haushofer’s best-selling eponymous novel from the 1960s, the film is a highly original exploration of the experience of solitude and survival. Gedeck plays an unnamed Austrian woman who goes to a secluded Alpine hunting lodge with her cousin (Ulrike Beimpold) and the latter’s husband (Karl Heinz Hackl) who, shortly after their arrival, decide to visit the nearest village. When the couple does not return the next morning the woman sets out for the village and discovers an invisible wall, behind which there appears to be no sign of life. The wall now separates her from the rest of the world. Left behind with a dog, a cat and a cow, she must try to survive alone in the forest.

BlackFish Showing from: Fri 27 Sept Tickets on sale: Tue 24 Sept Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured documentary challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.
