Shetland Choral Society presents
Shetland Choral Society Spring Concert
Friday 17 May Doors: 7pm, Start: 7.30pm Mareel Auditorium Along with four soloists from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Nigel Hayward accompanying, the Choral Society will sing music by Haydn, Vaughan Williams and contemporary Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. The Jenkins piece which opens the concert is the first of his ‘Songs of Sanctuary’, Adiemus from 1995; and uses the voices more like instruments with no lyrics other than syllables and invented words. Vaughan Williams set the words of seventeenth century poet George Herbert in his Five Mystical Songs, first performed in 1911. Written for baritone soloist, choir and accompaniment, it anticipates much of the composer’s pastoral style which was to follow. The major work in the programme is Haydn’s Theresienmesse or ‘Maria Theresa’ Mass from 1799; a large-scale setting of the Latin Mass including four vocal soloists, it is full of exuberance, originality and classical Viennese elegance.

Shetland Arts presents
Sunday 26 May Doors: 7pm, Start: 7.30pm Mareel Auditorium Formed in 2012, Vamm’s members are Shetland born Catriona Macdonald (formerly of Blazin’ Fiddles), Perthshire’s Patsy Reid (Breabach) and Norwegian Marit Falt. Vamm is an old Shetland word meaning “to bewitch or entrance,” and this is what they do, seamlessly creating a dynamic yet intimate sound that will take your breath away. Vamm’s combination of intricate, lyrical arrangements and bass-thumping rhythm means that at this year’s Celtic Connections festival they went from the awed silence of a theatre concert to the dancing and hollering of a late night club crowd – with the same material. It is music that is equally at home in folk gatherings or classical concert halls, in enormous tents or intimate rooms. This is the sound of three extremely gifted musicians pushing themselves to the limits of their ability. You’ve never heard anything quite like Vamm! £16
Vamm will also play at:
