Plastiglomerates by Aimee Labourne
Storytime for under 5s
‘Plastiglomerate’ is a proposed new kind of ‘human-made’ rock, consisting of a mix of melted plastic debris and natural sediment. Samples have been found on shorelines across the world. They are one part of a terrifying plastic pollution problem, which extends far beyond just visible material - as plastiglomerates are churned around in the water, smaller and smaller shards break off and form a ‘smog’ of microplastic particles in the ocean.
Thursday morning is storytime!
Invented at the start of the 20th century, plastic was initially seen as utopian - endlessly malleable, convenient, hygienic – and so suitable for Modernity’s new vision. Increased post-war consumerism and exploitation of nature now means however that the detritus of urbanutopia is clogging our most remote and wild-seeming coasts. Despite the vastness of the ocean, its watery depths cannot absorb this dystopian material.
In partnership with Shetland Library, we are hosting weekly storytime for the under 5s upstairs in our Café Bar. Admission is free, there’s ample space for buggy parking and we have tea, coffee and cakes in the Café downstairs! These sessions have been popular - please come early to get a good spot!
Through drawing, I wish to isolate these uncannily organic samples from their usual shoreline context where they blend in all too easily. Studying these plastic forms almost as though they are geological specimens allows me to trace their strange lines and shapes in detail, lines which reveal how natural processes now confusingly mix with human actions in a world which is becoming more and more materially chaotic.

A fascinating look at the life’s work of a 20th century master. Super Saturday with The Hostiles & Big Time Quell “The party is starting to die off and you’re thinking it’s time to head, then suddenly, a familiar blast of horns comes out of nowhere to remind you that it’s far from over…” We’re delivering you the alternative Burns Nicht this January with ska-punk band The Hostiles, supported by Shetland’s very own Big Time Quell. Based in Ayr, Scotland, The Hostiles were recently described by Discovered Magazine as “the band marrying skaa and pop punk like no other in 2019.” Reflecting the transatlantic origins of the band members themselves, their sound introduces sunny US ska-punk to slamming Scottish skacore. Recently sharing the stage with local heroes Forgotten Sons, this is the band’s first show in Shetland since their appearance at the Heavy Metal Buffet. They’ll be supported by Big Time Quell, whose cogs run entirely on each other’s joy and sweat, featuring Thomas ‘The Cheese Grater’ Jones, Jamie ‘Medium Rib Eye’ Hatchbar, Chris ‘Pun Life’ Cope, Robert ‘Boyband’ Balfour and ‘Stormin’ Norman Willmore.

Lucy Woodley, Ultima Thule ...War, violence and persecution leaves at least one in every 122 humans on the planet a refugee, internally displaced or seeking asylum. There are borders, some friendly, some not and the journey can be a hopeful adventure towards new shores and a better future or a desperate passage undertaken to anywhere to escape the place of departure, left with regret, often driven by fear… Lucy Woodley graduated from Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen in 1992 where she studied jewellery. She ran a successful jewellery business for 20 years based in the Highlands and now concentrates on sculptural works for galleries and private commissions. Ultima Thule tells a timeless story spanning centuries, of migrants fleeing from war and persecution or seeking a better life for loved ones.

Around the World in 80 Days
Norman Willmore Quartet
An Evening with Mark Beaumont
The Norman Willmore Quartet blends Scandinavian and Appalachian folk music with elements of free jazz as well as arrangements of old wartime songs and hymns always played with a sense of humour, and with respect to the tradition. The quartet are recording an album at the start of the new year so will be playing in lots of new material at this gig.
Around the World in 80 Days - Mark Beaumont set out to make this Victorian fiction a two wheeled reality. Having smashed the circumnavigation cycling World Record twice in his career, he now holds this 18,000 mile title in a time of 78 days and 14 hours, averaging 240 miles a day.
Showing films and photography, these events are a fascinating insight into Mark’s career of adventure
‘The monumental cliffs, swelling ebb and rural village politics of the Shetland Islands are the inspiration behind the music of the Norman Willmore Quintet. Playing together for 3 years has given the band a distinctive sound that is soft and inviting but always with the feeling of momentum and power behind it. They are often all improvising together in a tasteful dialogue, taking the audience on a journey to the last house at the end of the last road.’

What do you do when the state becomes the oppressor? Would you put your body on the line? What’s the value of dissent in our democracies?
The venue is confirmed, and the guest list is complete. The decorations have arrived, and the entertainment has been booked for a special garden party. But who is the mystery host? Join four singers and a pianist to find out, as Scottish Opera pour some fizzing tunes into your Spring.
Using their distinctive mixture of dance, theatre and storytelling, choreographer Joan Clevillé and acclaimed performer Solène Weinachter present an intimate solo work, performed in the round, re-imagining the Greek tragedy of Antigone for contemporary audiences. Exploring the strength and vulnerability of the body as a tool for resistance and civil disobedience, the piece follows the story of a young woman who disobeys the law and puts her body on the line to defend what she thinks is right. The work examines the value of dissent in contemporary democracy and how the body (and in particular the female body) can be the target of oppression but also a powerful tool for challenging social injustice. Once regarded as the greatest race in the history of cycling, we now know that both Armstrong and Pantani doped during their careers. At the time both were champions in their own right - Pantani winning the Tour de France in 1998, and Armstrong winning in 1999. In 2000 they went head to head on Mont Ventoux. They crossed the line together but their careers spiralled in wildly opposite directions. Armstrong won seven consecutive Tour de France titles; Pantani died of a cocaine overdose alone in a hotel room. Armstrong denied, lied and cheated where Pantani was caught.

CASE STUDY
New meeting places, sweet selfies and interesting ideas await - LOCUS lands on the streets of Lerwick in 2020 LOCUS is a contemporary art trail being devised around the centre of Lerwick by Living Lerwick in partnership with Shetland Arts. Four commissioned works of public art will act as town placemakers, animating the area and offering a new way to engage with contemporary art and the environment. A trail map will connect the works to give everyone – visitors and locals alike - a piece of the story. The project is wholly funded by the Scottish Government’s scheme to encourage town centres to diversify and flourish, creating footfall through local improvements and partnerships. Living Lerwick’s successful application to this scheme led to an open call for experienced
30
artists from Shetland and beyond to submit proposals for the project. The four works will be created by artists working nationally and internationally, engaging local businesses, schools and community groups to inform their work. Jane Matthews, managing the project for Shetland Arts, said, “We’re privileged to be working with artists of such high calibre and welcoming them to Shetland to explore the place, its history, culture and future. Often the most exciting ideas come from new perspectives and I’m excited to see the concepts for these works emerging from the research that’s already underway.”
School workshops will take place in the New Year to get pupils involved with the project, working directly with some of the design work. And conversations have begun with local fabricators with the aim of having as much of the work as possible made in Shetland. The trail will connect business, place, art, the community and visitors to Lerwick in a celebration of bespoke creativity and design in the heart of our town. Watch this space…
