WHAT’S ON NOVEMBER

WELCOME
So we have published our Annual Summary for 2018/19. This is a short four page document that makes it very easy for you to see how we are financially supported and where we spend our income. This year we have made the decision to include a graph that shows our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. Since we started measuring our carbon impact, and taking steps to manage it we have reduced our C02 tonne equivalent by over 40% - from 533 in 2014/15 to 316 in 2018/19. If you are interested in more detail about what we do and why we do it you can access our Trustees Report and Financial Statements at shetlandarts.org/ about/documents.
Looking ahead to November, we are excited to be bringing 365: Stories and Music to Shetland under the Wordplay banner. Commissioned by, and launched at, Edinburgh International Book Festival this summer, 365: Stories and Music is a collaboration between writer James Robertson and Lau member Aidan O’Rourke. This combination of immersive installation, performance and workshops is a fascinating study of the discipline required to be creative. They will be joined by Mercury prize-nominated Kit Downes for a performance on Friday 1st November. November sees Islesburgh Drama Groups’ latest production, The Crucible, take the stage at The Garrison. One of Arthur Miller’s best known plays, The Crucible is a dramatisation of the Salem witch trials that took place towards the end of the 17th Century in Massachusetts.
Whether it is Film, Art, Music or the Performing Arts this is your guide to Shetland Arts and its venues. Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of programming, some details may be subject to change.
Another of our Oot and Aboot tours takes three of Shetland’s finest musical acts on the road! Fresh from recording new music in the studio at Mareel, Haltadans, Herkja and Freda Leask will be performing at Skeld Public Hall, Burravoe Public Hall and Bigton Public Hall. Herkja’s performance at Hogmanay is definitely one of my personal highlights and I am really looking forward to these concerts. I have already hit my word count limit and I can feel our designers glaring at me through the office wall, so check out all the content in the What’s On Guide for workshops, films, concerts, performance, art and craft exhibitions . . .

These Favourite Things Over the course of this year five schools across Shetland (Brae, Aith, Whalsay, Sandwick and Fetlar) have been exploring the theme of COLLECTION & ARCHIVE through the off-site contemporary visual art programme. The project has been built around visits to two exhibitions with workshops from visiting artists and makers. We’ve been thinking about why people collect things, what a collection can teach us, and we’ve been discovering what our friends like to collect at home. COLLECTION & ARCHIVE: FAVOURITE THINGS represents the treasured possessions of all the pupils we have worked with in 2019. In years to come this may tell us more than we can possibly know right now… The START Bonhoga Education Programme is supported by national organisation Children & The Arts and delivered by Shetland Arts in partnership with SIC Creative Links. It provides young people in five local schools with the opportunity to participate in high quality arts activities, focusing on our contemporary visual art programme.
Shetland Open 2019: Contemporary Applied Art & Craft The Shetland Open exhibition takes place every two years, with an exhibition of work developed by prize winners in the intervening year. The focus this year is contemporary applied art and craft and entries are welcome from amateur, professional and student artists and craft-makers aged 18 and over, who are linked to Shetland by birth, education or residency. Work is to be submitted to Bonhoga Gallery or Mareel no later than 7th September. All submissions that meet the entry criteria will be displayed in the exhibition. Applied Art and Craft work includes…Basketry & Willow Weaving, Bookbinding, Ceramics, Furniture Making & Wood Working, Glass Working, Jewellery, Leather Working, Metal Working, Millinery, Mosaics, Paper Making (paperworks and wallpaper, this does not include stationery), Silversmithing & Goldsmithing, Stone Working (carving, lettering, sculpture and plasterwork), and Textiles.
Bairns’ Open 2019: Craft The Bairns’ Open takes place every year in the Lower Gallery at the same time as the Open exhibition in the main gallery. It is open to all school age children and young adults in Shetland, from P1-S6. This year the focus is CRAFT and we are looking for all kinds of handmade craft, eg, textile pieces including knitting, weave, felt; sculpture including wood, ceramic, metal work; as well as jewellery. The piece must be no larger than A3, and 3D equivalent of A3. Three prizes are awarded and work will be displayed in the lower gallery and craft cabinets at Bonhoga from 21 Sep – 3 Nov. Deadline for entries is 7 September, with work submitted to Bonhoga or Mareel.

365: Stories and Music 365: Stories and Music brings together the genius of Scottish poet and novelist James Robertson (And The Land Lay Still, The Testament of Gideon Mack) and the sounds of Scottish fiddler and composer Aidan O’Rourke (Musician of the Year, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2014). James wrote a short story every day for a year - with each story made up from 365 words. After the publication of this collection of stories, Aidan decided to challenge this by writing a new tune every day for a year in response. Alongside multiinstrumentalist Kit Downes, they present music from the 365 Project with selected readings from James. Fridays 1 & 22 Nov, 6pm Mareel, Café Bar Free

Rigoletto On the Lake (12A)

Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece – compelling, blood-curdling and beautiful – performed for the first time on the unique Bregenz lake stage in Austria. Once of Verdi’s most popular works, featuring several of opera’s bestknown arias, Rigoletto is an unforgettable tale of sacrifice and revenge, of a father’s rage and a daughter’s shame. Directed and designed by Philip Stölzl, this timeless tragedy will delight audiences, with a powerhouse combination of entertainment and emotional intensity from the spectacular shore of Lake Constance.
In 2012, Waad al-Kateab met her future husband, Dr Zahed Katurji, at protests against President Bashar al-Assad. Both were dedicated to a new Syria: she, a marketing student, filmed, while he provided first aid. The resulting documentary is in part a family video diary: falling in love, a wedding, the birth of a child, hanging out with their friends. But for all the irrepressible, relatable joy of these events, shells and bombs are often in the background. In Arabic with English subtitles.

Islesburgh Drama Group: The Crucible “Until an hour before the Devil fell, God thought him beautiful in Heaven.” Arthur Miller, The Crucible
Arthur Miller’s classic parable of mass hysteria draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witchhunt of 1692 - ‘one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history’ - and the McCarthyism which gripped America in the 1950s. The story of how the small community of Salem is stirred into madness by superstition, paranoia and malice, culminating in a violent climax is a savage attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations. In this new interpretation of the play, Islesburgh Drama Group reimagines the town of Salem in a familiar landscape of a small island community in 1600s Scotland and explores how the themes are as relevant today as when the play was written over 60 years ago.

A Celebration of Shetland Writing Taking a break from the usual Wordplay (which will return in 2020) we are sharing a different literary celebration this year built around the concert, workshops and installation of 365: Stories and Music, a major new collection of Scottish contemporary literature and music in one interactive sound-art installation, launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival this year and touring to Mareel in November. We round off this celebration with a special event to celebrate the creativity within our isles. Hear from a variety of Shetland writers in an evening featuring poetry and prose from across Shetland. This event also celebrates our local writers’ groups, who meet regularly to work on their pieces together. They share ideas, encourage and give critiques, and develop their skills and techniques. Many of these writers have published works in anthologies, or their own collections and novels. Some of the groups have even published Writers’ Group collections. This event gives us the chance to hear new work from these talented local writers.

Sorry We Missed You (15) 2h01
Ken Loach’s follow-up to the wonderful I, Daniel Blake tells the story of a family at the mercy of the modern day ‘gig economy’. Ricky is a former construction worker who lost his job and home in the 2008 financial crash. Eager to make a go at being his own boss, he takes a freelance delivery gig, convincing his wife, Abbie, a home-care nurse, to sell her car in order to buy the van he needs for the job. Complications mount, and the family’s hopes of getting ahead seem only to drag them further behind.
Suzi Q (Cert TBC) 1h58
The definitive, unexpurgated story of Suzi Quatro, the girl from Detroit City who redefined the role of women in rock’n’roll. Before Suzi burst onto the music scene in 1973, there were few women in rock, and absolutely none who played bass, sang lead vocals, led the band, rocked out and reached millions of people around the world. This deeply personal exploration of fame, ambition, ego and resilience gives an intimate insight into a remarkable individual.

The Aeronauts (PG) 2h00
The sky is no limit for Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne’s aerial explorers in this thrilling adventure.
Shetland Rape Crisis presents Zero Tolerance: Violence Unseen Zero Tolerance and award-winning photographer Alicia Bruce have worked with groups and individuals affected by men’s violence to create a series of photographs that explore the types of violence against women that remain unseen and unacknowledged by mainstream society. The photographs shine a light on the types of violence against women that still remain unacceptably hidden and better represent the constellation of women’s lived experiences.
Set in 1862 and inspired by true events, The Aeronauts follows wealthy young widow Amelia Wren and headstrong scientist James Glaisher as they mount a balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history. As their perilous ascent reveals their true selves, this unlikely pair discover things about each other – and themselves – that helps each of them find their place in the world they have left behind.
Over the past decades there have been dramatic changes to public attitudes around some aspects of men’s violence against women. Yet domestic abuse, sexual violence and other forms of violence against women are still prevalent in Scotland today, especially for groups of women who face other forms of discrimination; women with learning disabilities, women in prostitution, lesbian, bisexual and trans (LBT) and black and minority ethnic women. This show is presented in the Auditorium with information at the door explaining the potentially sensitive nature of the work.

2h02
In this journey through the lesserknown parts of Scottish whisky culture, we follow spirits writer Dave Broom on his quest to gain a deeper understanding of his national drink.
A powerfully intimate and insightful portrait of the internationally renowned INXS frontman, Michael Hutchence.
Dave, who grew up in Glasgow, has been writing about spirits for over thirty years, but whisky is his particular passion and a subject on which he has many strong opinions. This film traces his journey back to the roots of whisky and show how it is an integral part of a wider Scottish culture, rather than just a product. Join us for a whisky tasting session at 7pm on Friday 22 November, before the 8pm screening of the film - £20.
Deftly woven from an extraordinary archive of rich imagery, Michael’s private home movies and those of his lovers, friends, and family, the film delves beneath the public persona of the charismatic ‘Rock God’ and transports us through the looking glass to reveal a multifaceted, intensely sensitive and complex man.

Hogmanay with Kinnaris Quintet
RANT
Shetland Arts Presents Hogmanay 2019 - welcome the new year in glittering style with the dazzling Kinnaris Quintet!
RANT is the meeting of 4 of Scotland’ s finest fiddle players, two from the Shetland Islands and two from the Highlands.
“A fearless and unconventional exploration of traditional music as this powerhouse of a band takes Irish, Scottish, and Bluegrass by the hand and spins them into an album as unique and innovative as it is technically dazzling…” (Folk Radio UK) The night will begin with a traditional Shetland variety concert, opened by the Kinnaris Quintet with performances by local bands and musicians, followed by supper and the chance to relax in one of the cinema screens, while the stage is re-set for the Kinnaris Quintet to bring in the bells for Hogmanay 2019. Then it’s time to dance the night away with our DJs and dance band! Having appeared at Shetland Folk Festival, supported Shooglenifty in their gig at Glasgow’s Barrowlands in January and played on BBC Radio Scotland, Kinnaris Quintet are no strangers to music lovers. Bursting onto the scene back in 2017, the five-piece are revelling in the success of their debut album, Free One (2018). Combining Scottish and Irish folk with bluegrass and classical music, their musical style makes for a riotous addition to the evening’s entertainment, as Shetlanders and visitors get set to welcome in the New Year.
Bethany Reid, Jenna Reid, Lauren MacColl and Anna Massie join forces to create a sound which is both rich and lush, yet retaining all the bite and spark synonymous with a Scottish fiddle player. Using just their fiddles, they weave a tapestry of melodies, textures, layers and sounds.
