WELCOME
Summer arrived!! Which is quite a lovely thing, I have spent a number of evenings sitting on my bench pondering the gardening I should be doing. July saw the inaugural Folk Frenzy, curated by Kevin Henderson. We were joined by musicians from as far afield as Japan and New Zealand we also had the wonderful Pineland Fiddlers come all the way from Maine in America for a week of Shetland folk music. Catriona Macdonald, Antti Järvela and Ross Cooper joined Kevin as the core teaching team supplemented by a range of great Shetland tutors. A real personal highlight for me was the Tutors Concert where Kevin, Catriona, Antti and Ross performed, accompanied by Margaret Robertson.
September means Screenplay 2019 and we have now launched the programme. We are excited to be welcoming Mark Kermode and Linda Ruth Williams back to Shetland in their role as curators and meeting first-time guests Sanjeev Bhaskar, Harry Wootliff and Jeanie Finlay. I’m really looking forward to seeing Alien on the big screen and I think another highlight will be Bludgeon about the brutal sport of medieval combat. We have partnered with Broadway Gallery to present the work of Roseanne Watt in Letchworth, England and are looking forward to giving Shetlanders a chance to see the breadth of Roseanne’s creativity with her show Stoal, which will be installed in the Booth, Scalloway for the duration of September. September also sees the launch of an exciting new range of classes to keep you busy over the autumn and winter! Shetland Youth Theatre is back reimagined as Shetland Youth Theatre Company, meeting every week and building on acting

skills across the year as well as working on productions. Our new Inclusive Performing Arts class is a fun and engaging way to learn theatrical skills, movement and music, including Makaton and sign language, for those over 14, with or without disabilities. For the dancers, there is a drop-in Contemporary Dance Class for adults, led by our new Creative Project Manager and international choreographer Kathryn Spence, as well as a Shetland Youth Dance Company for the teens! In the meantime our Wellbeing sessions are back with Singalong Sessions with Suzanne Briggs and Craft with Jane Cockayne, to be joined by another writing class later in the year. I hope to bump into you at an event, screening, concert, workshop...

These Favourite Things Over the course of this year five schools across Shetland (Brae, Aith, Whalsay, Sandwick and Fetlar) have been exploring the theme of COLLECTION & ARCHIVE through the off-site contemporary visual art programme. The project has been built around visits to two exhibitions with workshops from visiting artists and makers. We’ve been thinking about why people collect things, what a collection can teach us, and we’ve been discovering what our friends like to collect at home. COLLECTION & ARCHIVE: FAVOURITE THINGS represents the treasured possessions of all the pupils we have worked with in 2019. In years to come this may tell us more than we can possibly know right now…
ShetlandMade The final exhibition of our successful ShetlandMade programme at Bonhoga Gallery runs until 15 September, featuring some of Shetland’s most talented designers and makers as they launch new work and showcase their current ranges. As well as an opportunity to purchase from a large and diverse collection of high quality contemporary applied art and craft, this is a unique opportunity to engage with craft at a closer level, and discover what it is that inspire our local designers and makers to create their amazing pieces. FEATURED MAKERS: Mike Finnie, Glansin Glass, Nielanell, Paparwark, Esme Wilcock and Andrea Williamson.
The Night Before Screenplay Film Quiz This year’s Screenplay film quiz takes place on the evening before the festival films kick off, so this is your opportunity to get ‘match fit’. Hosted by Mark Kermode and Linda Ruth Williams and supported by Mareel’s regular quizmaster team, there will be more than the usual mayhem going on. Hoping to see all our regular teams and some new contenders so book early – this is always sold out. As usual, the ticket price is for the table, not the individual, and there must be no more than six to a team. So – come early, come determined, and let battle commence! Quiz takes place in the Main Auditorium via Cafe Bar entrance.
The START Bonhoga Education Programme is supported by national organisation Children & The Arts and delivered by Shetland Arts in partnership with SIC Creative Links. It provides young people in five local schools with the opportunity to participate in high quality arts activities, focusing on our contemporary visual art programme.

Front Country Front Country is an acclaimed acoustic band from California, fronted by gifted singer and songwriter Melody Walker with her huge bluesy voice. The quintet is based on bluegrass instrumentation but draws on a broad palette of country, blues, Americana and jazz influences. Front Country has become renowned as a storming live act on the US festival scene over the last few years, after winning the band competition at Colorado’s Rockygrass festival in their early days. They refer to their style as “roots-pop” which goes some way to describing their wide-ranging but majestic and accessible sound. Now based in Nashville, this entertaining five-piece is packed with instrumental and songwriting talent, including Jacob Groopman (guitar/vocals), Jeremy Darrow (double bass), Adam “Roscoe” Roszkiewicz (mandolin/vocals) and Leif Karlstrom (fiddle). Support comes from Shetland’s own acclaimed Americana specialists Kansa, who last year released their excellent debut album The Rowan Tree. “Sharply played ensemble Americana, with a powerhouse vocalist who puts the blues in bluegrass” - Rolling Stone Tuesday 3 September, 7.30pm Mareel £18

They soon discover the awful truth: as they read them, the haunted stories have come to life and the monsters within have awoken.

James Acaster Hugely acclaimed English comedian James Acaster is bringing his seventh solo show to Mareel in September. In 2018 he was commissioned to record four hour-long stand-up specials for Netflix, has appeared on a host of leading TV panel shows and garnered a succession of awards and nominations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 will be in residency in London’s West End for six nights in January before he takes the show the length and breadth of the UK. Here’s what he has to say about it: “One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. The next day I was asked to name my new show. Come along.” Friday 27 September, 7.30pm Mareel £20 SOLD OUT

365 Stories and Music Wordplay 2019 is taking on a slightly different format this year, built around the concert, workshops and installation of 365: Stories and Music, a major new collection of Scottish contemporary literature and music in one interactive sound-art installation, launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival this year and touring to Mareel in November. 365: Stories and Music brings together the genius of Scottish poet and novelist James Robertson and Scottish fiddler and composer Aidan O’Rourke of Lau. James wrote a short story every day for a year, each story comprising 365 words, this was published in 2014 by Penguin as 365: Stories. Aidan then matched the challenge. He wrote a new tune every day for a year in response to James’s stories. I loved reading those stories: a daily dose of poetry and wisdom. And I loved the writing. The language is emotional, concise, apposite. Somehow the words and the pacing of the stories felt musical. I was intrigued by the discipline of setting such a quantifiable daily creative ritual. Would the same be possible in music…? (Aidan O’Rourke) Aidan’s response is sparse and emotive contemporary folk music — the fiddle is paired with bold and exploratory harmonies from ECM recording artist Kit Downes on harmonium and piano. This concert features Aidan and Kit performing music from the 365 Project alongside readings from James.
