ABSTRACT

This research was carried out on the public library design towards the assessment and enhancement of the functional requirements of Borno State Library. Due to the increased in the number of scholars, readers, researchers etc. in the state, and to the fact that the existing Borno State library was not adequate to cater for the need of those users, it’s justified that there is need for upgrading and redesigning the state library to strengthen the educational performance and reading capability of the people of the State. The methodology used for this project include; reviewing of related literature, carrying out various case studies, taking a concise space analysis for the users, staff and books, field observation of the site, oral interview to users and staff in order to provide a befitting public library design. A three storey building public library was designed for Borno State with the provision of modern facilities. The design was zoned according to noisy, semi noisy and quite zone. The noisy areas such as exhibition hall, general store, internate café,counter desk e.t.c was positioned in the ground floor. The semi noisy areas such as lecture hall, resting room, common room e.t.c was placed in first and some part of second floor. The quite areas such as reference section, reading room, reserve room e.t.c was positioned in the third floor, other facilities include:internet café, E-library, library printing press, Audio-visual Section, binding unit, Electronic information technology along side reading hall, reference section, research rooms, study rooms, meeting rooms, exhibition hall, archives rooms, manuscript room, atlas and map room, with a proper consideration of 60% for furnitures and 40% for circulation to comply with the interior design modules. Further research on the material section is recommended as far as this project work is concern.
