This allows Self Help Graphics(SHG) to hire artists, pay them a competitive fee, and enact its mission of self-help. BMAS assists the artists in their professional development (tactics for professional growth, lesson planning and curriculum development) by providing field experience through the facilitation of SHG’s acclaimed workshops. The BMAS creative team facilitates workshops in the community that include: printmaking (silkscreening, linocut, dry point, monotype), digital art using mobile devices and tablets, aerosol art (including temporary murals), and stencil work, among other workshops that can be customized to fit any scenario. The BMAS was founded as a program that works towards equity and social justice through art. To hire BMAS for your next work or school event, visit www.selfhelpgraphics.com/bmas

The first Paper Fashion show was created by SHG’s original avant garde performance art group ASCO, which at that time was represented by Gronk, Patssi Valdez, Diane Gamboa, Sean Carrillo, Daniel Villareal, Armando Norte, Marisela Norte, Marisa Leal, Maria Elena Gaitan and Consuelo Flores. The show was presented for Self Help Graphics & Art’s Día de los Muertos Celebration in 1982 and included other guest artists as performers and models. WORKSHOPS

Our workshops are designed to promote peer to peer learning in a nurturing space. We equip artists with introductions to traditional printmaking practices and the resource of a community art center where they can expand their own work.

DIY Silkscreen Workshops Our DIY (Do it yourself) workshop will teach you the basics of the screen-printing process. During these one-day classes participants are taught how to transfer their designs or photos onto a screen using photo emulsion and an exposing unit. Your prepared screen can be used to print on variety of surfaces including paper, textiles and clothing. With this class, you can make posters, fine art, print tote bags or t-shirts.

Linoleum Block Printing Workshops Invented in China, woodblock printing dates back to 220 A.D. and is how stamps were made to print patterned textiles and documents. Carve a linoleum surface to produce a printing block. The carved blocks can be used to create limited editions or experimental works.

25

Aerosol Workshops The Aerosol Art Workshops focus on teaching participants of all levels and ages how to create artwork using aerosol paint and other painting tools used in creating aerosol based art such as paint markers, color pencils, sharpies, stencils, and stickers.

Drypoint Printmaking Workshops Our peer-to-peer printmaking workshops are led by local artists. The drypoint workshop uses all green / nontoxic materials. Participants learn how to create printmaking plates using plexiglass and a metal scribe or needle to create their image. Select workshops combine printmaking methods and mix media.

PRINTMAKING GLOSSARY CHINE-COLLÉ is a technique that allows you to add colour to your prints without making another block. Using Chine Collé you are able to print on much finer, more delicate papers which are bonded onto a more sturdy paper during the printing process. DRYPOINT is a printmaking technique of the intaglio family, in which an image is incised into a plate (or “matrix”) with a hard-pointed “needle” of sharp metal or diamond point. Intaglio is the printmaking technique in which the image is incised into a surface and the incised line or sunken area holds the ink. LIMITED EDITION A limited edition is a work of art produced in very small numbers, so that each one will be valuable in the future. The print edition is the set of signed and numbered impressions. Impressions are numbered using numerals 1/20, 2/20. LINOLEUM A relief printing process in which the image is carved out of linoleum block using a carving tool. PRINTMAKING is the process of creating artworks through hand made processes, normally on paper. Each print is an original work of art with elements of originality, rather than just being produced through photographic mechanical reproductions. 32

MONOPRINT A monoprint is a single impression of an image through the printmaking medium. Materials such as plexiglass plates, relief blocks or silk screens can be used to create monoprints. Rather than printing multiple copies of a single image, only one impression is produced through a direct painting application, collage or applying color to an image after it is printed. RELIEF PRINTING A Printmaking processes in which the image is printed from the raised or uncarved surface of the block or plate that has been inked. SILKSCREEN Also called silkscreen process. a printmaking technique in which a mesh cloth is stretched over a heavy wooden frame and the design, painted on the screen by tusche or affixed by stencil, is printed by having a squeegee force color through the pores of the materia
