There’s a beautiful
future ahead
Noemí ’s Farm Plan At the center of it all is the family home. There’s a kitchen garden with fresh vegetables and an orchard of citrus fruit. Bollos and patacones, made from corn and plantains, cook in the outdoor kitchen. Sancocho, a traditional stew made with chicken, culantro, cassava, plantains, and yams, boils atop an improved SHI stove that reduces wood consumption and smoke inhalation by 50%. Each piece of food has a role to play, from pigeon peas that improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation to pineapples that help control soil erosion as a live barrier in terraced farming. The land has been transformed into an integrated and thriving ecosystem that will provide for generations to come.
Every SHI partnership begins with a farm plan. Working with a field trainer, participants draw their vision for the future of their land.
