Dear friends, I can’t look back on the year without first thanking the new and longtime donors, stakeholders and member organizations, our incredible staff, dedicated board members, and inspiring partner families. Each person in our large and growing community plays a critical role in helping us achieve positive change for people and the planet. We can’t do this work without you, and I’m so grateful for your support.

While the pandemic’s public health crisis continues to present challenges to navigate, on top of the ongoing climate crisis and its web of devastating impacts, stories of resiliency from families participating in our program across Belize, Honduras, and Panama fill me with hope of a future where people and the environment thrive in a healthy balance. Their inspiring stories remind me, especially in challenging times, that the key to positive impacts and lasting change is keeping communities and local knowledge at the center of all solutions.

I am excited to take this year’s lessons learned and apply them to our work as we move forward. It’s an exciting time for SHI, and I am grateful that you’re right there with us.

FY2021 PROGRAM IMPACT We celebrated the graduations of over 200 partnering families from 11 communities across the region and welcomed even more families into the SHI community as they begin their transformational journey. FY2021 graduates join the 3,238 families who have successfully partnered with SHI to adopt regenerative practices since 1997, planting 4.2 million trees and restoring 26,687 acres.

In FY2021, we’ve been laying the foundations for a brighter future. Our plans to scale SHI’s impact took shape as we established budding partnerships and tested innovations within our own model. We publicly launched the Million Farm Transformation, an ambitious initiative with the support of the world-renowned scale and agricultural experts on SHI’s advisory council.

VALENTINA’S LEGACY A “hard-working woman, a fighter without reservations,” is how SHI field trainer Maribel Ojo describes partnering farmer Valentina Rodríguez. Valentina lives with her husband, daughter, and two grandchildren in the community of Aguas Claras, Panama. For years, Valentina has dreamed of reforesting her land with native species and fruit trees. Working with Maribel, that dream is becoming a reality. In a world where deforestation has become the norm, Valentina intends to restore her land through reforestation and sustainable agriculture to create a healthy and biodiverse environment for her grandchildren to enjoy for years to come. For Valentina, her trees are her legacy.

“I am very grateful to SHI for everything they’ve done to support my dream of having a farm of timber and fruit trees. I lacked the resources and necessary tools to prepare the land. It was impossible for me to do alone. I am very grateful because in the not-so-distant future, my grandchildren can enjoy the fruit of these trees while sitting underneath a wonderful canopy.”

Valentina is one of 376 families actively partnering with SHI. 41% of all SHI partnerships are currently led by women.

FINANCIAL REPORT CONTRIBUTIONS

TOTAL: $1,236,368 Every year we are astounded by the generosity of our community.

In FY2021, SHI received over 1.2 million in revenue with 88% representing the generosity of individual donors.

SHI’s FY2021 expenditures totalled over 1.1 million with fully 79% dedicated to SHI’s program expenses.
