dining in 2015. Dining in 2015 was a competition held by Designboom and Macef, Milano. The theme is to design kitchenware, tableware or dining ware for the use in 2015. The shortlist of the competition was out and one of our favorite is the "Fragile" designed by Mey Kahn and Boaz Kahn from Israel. The ceramic made salt and pepper shaker comes in one piece and by braking it, you make it useful. The design is not only elegant, but also full of fun. www.designboom.com

new ny skyline. A planned 75-story tower at 53 West 53rd Street promises to change the face of the Manhattan skyline. The plans by architect Jean Nouvel were unveiled recently. The tower will rise next to, and expand, the Museum of Modern Art. Three floors of the building will be used by MoMA to increase exhibtion space. The rest of the tower will house a hotel and luxury apartments. The exterior of the building will be sheathed in glass and structural elements, giving the tower a crystalline appearance. Pre-sales for the project are expected to begin in late 2008. www.jeannouvel.com

the greenhouse. Stockholm Furniture Fair this year has just dropped the curtain. This year's fair received a record-breaking 40,744 visitors, while the number of industry specialists visiting from abroad rose by 11%. One of the most interesting parts of the Stockholm Furniture Fair is the "greenhouse." It is a showcase of upcoming international talent from design schools and new designers. The special section is jury selected and provides a platform for young designers to make contacts with producers and manufacturers. Here are some images of the exhibition. / via designboom webfair2.stofair.se/furniturefair_eng/index.asp?menulink=2

man of the year. Tokujin Yoshioka has been chosen as the best furniture designer of the year by Wallpaper magazine. An apprentice to Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, Yoshioka set up on his own in 2000. While his furniture for Driade is acclaimed, it was his design of Moroso’s showroom in Milan this year, incorporating work such as his ‘Panna’ chair, that got the cognoscenti going. The Panna Chair, which means cream in Italian, is the evolution of the Pane, or bread, chair, initially shown in 2006 at the Museo della Permanente in Milan. The Pane Chair was named for its unique production method using a mold to literally bake the raw materials in a large oven, hardening and securing their form. /via wallpaper www.wallpaper.com www.moroso.it www.tokujin.com

Khodi Feiz I am an industrial designer who lives and works in Amsterdam with my wife, Anneko, and our two sons Cyrus and Kiyan. I was born in Iran and when I was fifteen I moved to the United States. I have studied at Syracuse University in New York and graduated in 1986. After graduating I started working for Texas Instruments and in 1990 I moved to the Netherlands to work for Philips Design. At Philips, I worked on projects ranging from medical equipment, consumer electronics and domestic appliances to strategic design. Latterly, I held the position of manager and senior designer for the Advanced Design Group. www.feizdesign.com images copyright Š Feiz Design Studio

Have you ever collaborated with your brother, Reza? Is there any competition between you?
No we haven't collaborated professionally yet, but who knows maybe someday, we are always talking about it... But we have a very close interaction and alway review and critic each others work.
What inspires your works the most? What is your philosophy?
I find my inspiration in daily life: a droplet of water, the way the street turns a corner, how the joints in your finger work, how your neighborhood fruit and vegetable stand compose their products. Literally, I seek inspiration in everything. The overriding inspirations for my work can be summed up by: clarity, concept, and context. Clarity: objects which are stripped down to their bare essence, not to make them boring, but to bring out their main expressive quality. Too often ‘simple’ projects are dismissed as superficial and banal; it seems the more
What kind of products do you like to design the most?
As long as I work with a nice brief and a committed client, I am happy. What is critical for me in designing products is to find an underlying purpose for them; a certain usefulness or a basic 'raison d'etre', the rest usually falls into place.

What is the most exciting project you've done & why?
In 1995 I was selected as the project leader for the 'Vision of the Future' project developed at Philips Design. This was a once in a lifetime project which doesn't come along so often. This has to be one of the more challenging and at the same time more memorable projects I have been involved in. A project with an extremely wide scope, involving many people with different backgrounds and disciplines. On the other hand, currently I am involved in projects with Nokia and a very exciting project with Herman Miller which I am extremely excited about!
Is there any brand you would love to collaborate with & why?
I think the reason why some brands have become more attractive to designers to work with is in their understanding and respect for design. It is always an honour to work with such companies. At the end of the day it is about trust and a deep level of commitment from both the Brands and the designer. This is the only way to develop outstanding products. So, in answer to your question, I would love to work with any brand which thinks of design in this context.
Where do you live? Any place in the city you recommend if friends are visiting?
I live in Amsterdam and a few of my favorite places to visit: 1. The Stedlijk Museum; 2. The Gallery/furniture shop called 'The Frozen Fountain'; and 3. Pata Negras tapas restaurant for the most authentic tapas outside of Spain!

I love to cook! I try to cook every evening for my family. It is my way to transition from my work to my private life.
Do you like magazines? Which magazine is your favorite & why?
What drove you to design a series of environmental friendly furniture during Milan 2007? (Perf, Plana, Bras, System_24, Tak..)What's the motive?

How many T-shirts do you have in your closet? How often do you wear T-shirt and jeans? Graniph is a T-shirts specialty store, founded by three young design students in Japan in 2001. The brand name, Graniph, is like an anagram of “graphic” and “typography. “ It had soon attracted young generation attention, and just for few years, Graniph has established over 50 stores all over Japan and started to spread its territory to Asia area. Graniph understands itself as a fusion of art and fashion through T-shirts as media with good quality jersey tee and reasonable price.

For our common sense, T-shirts are mass production goods. However, the designs of Graniph are only produced in the limited edition of 1000 pieces each. There are average three new designs per day and have constantly 130 different designs displayed in the store. Especially, most of the designs are only printed on one color T-shirt. Not like other competitors, they consider the color of the T-shirt as a part of the design. And most of the colors they have are so special that you can not find them from other clothing stores.
47
Because each T-shirt of Graniph is released during a period of time and won’t appear again, it is worth to collect them as art works. Besides their in house designers, they collaborate with artists, designers, photographers, illustrators, and typographers from around the world to introduce their works through the media, T-shirts. Furthermore, they also assist and present music and movie productions by producing collaboration tees.

Currently, Graniph announced the international Design T-shirt award vol.2. They welcome young artists and designers to send their ideas, illustrations, digital, hand-drawn design, or photographs. The winners will get cash prizes, and of course have their designs produced on Graniph tees. Through this award, they hope to give young artists a platform to present and to show their talent to the world.

Except 50 stores in Japan, Graniph has opened branches in Taiwan and Singapore in 2007. This month, there will be a new store in Sydney, Australia. They also are going to open an international online store soon. Where will be the next? Melanie, Art director and International PR of Graphis Inc., the company behind Graniph said, “we are hoping to strengthen our contacts to Europe and America soon!

Scallops + Chinese cabba I love to cook and collect recipes, but I never exactly follow the steps. For me, cooking should be playful. Remember, always put your imagination to someone’s recipe and bring it to your vision. 1/2 recipe rules are easy and healthy. Modern people are always in a hurry, and I believe, with 1/2 effort, 1/2 steps, 1/2 fat, 1/2 time of cooking, will also bring you to a lovely cooking experience and healthier dish. That’s why I called this chapter “1/2 Recipe”. Cooking is art. Let’s play.

Scallops and Chinese cabbage soup

Suffering from La Niña? IT is cold everywhere this year. When it’s cold and wet, hot soup is the most comfort food to warm our body and soul. On this recipe, I use Chinese cabbage which is a lettuce-like vegetable but with lots of juice. It’s easy to find it in China town. Actually, Korean uses it to make delicious “Kimchi”. The spicy ingredient is “Ginger”, which is good for keeping your body warm. Think of the yummy taste of sweet juicy cabbage has been cooking for 30 minutes and fresh succulent scallops, you really should write down these simple ingredients on your shopping list. Happy Chinese New Year!
