o What We D
SAVING a A LITTLE HEART SO THEY CAN LIVE A BIG LIFE! Saving A Child's Heart initiative (SACHi) is one of Asia's largest voluntary organizations, dedicated to paediatric cardiac care for underprivileged. In order to combat the escalating problem of congenital cardiac issues in children, Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Group of Hospitals established the Children's Cardiac Wing in the hospitals. SACHi exists today due to his boundless vision towards removing barriers that deny any child the right to breathe freely, play, study and most importantly, live a full life. Established in 2003, SACHi aims to provide early diagnosis, treatment, surgery, post-operative care and financial support to children from economically weak sections of the society. SACHi has till date touched 50,000 lives. Our achievement is that every child irrespective of community or background, is provided cutting edge treatment and operative care. Our training and workshops not only enable our medical workforce, but also educate people on heart care and heart disease prevention in the most backward areas of the country. Ours is a story of positive change that has only just begun its journey. As this mission grows, it is future generations that will see more and more children growing into adults leading healthy, happy, rewarding lives!
It all started with Gayathri. Five days old, barely able to breathe, blue with deoxygenation, Gayathri was brought to us by her labourer parents. It would have been impossible to save her but we had different plans. We believed she was destined to live. Eight years later, she is a fireball of energy, a source of joy to her parents, and pride to her doctors!

Have you ever woken up feeling like your chest is trapped? That no matter how much you gulp and swallow air, your breath simply cannot make its way to your lungs? Have you ever felt like your heart is beating so rapidly that it is going to leap out of your body? Have you ever wanted to run and play with your friends but stopped within a few steps because you suddenly felt so exhausted ?

THE MATTER F O T R A E H THE GETTING TO SACHi's work in paediatric cardiac care centers around four keys areas:
PREVENTION
FREE SCREENING AND DIAGNOSIS Our team of doctors and paramedical staff offer free cardiac screening at medical camps in cities, towns and villages across India, for all children under 12 years of age. Until now, SACHi has conducted camps and screened children on a regular basis in Kolkata, West Bengal; Warangal, Vijayawada, Guntur, Karimnagar, West Godavari, Kurnool, and Medak in Andhra Pradesh; Ahmedabad, Nadiad, Vadodara and Surat in Gujarat; Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Rourkela in Orissa; Pune, Nagpur and Chandrapur in Maharashtra.
Building awareness, we believe is the key towards educating society on children's heart diseases. Our aim is to build awareness on two levels. One, to the less educated or illiterate, economically weak sections, where lack of awareness, facilities and funds means an inability to distinguish or understand what may be ailing their children. We achieve this through medical workshops conducted by our team in towns and villages. The second is addressed to policy makers, corporate, well-placed individuals and the media, to highlight the magnitude of the problem and seek their help in our mission. Our efforts through paediatric seminars and conferences, fundraisers and numerous events, have helped bring necessary attention and action to the cause.
TREATMENT & SURGERY Based on the medical camp findings and diagnosis, children requiring immediate attention are placed at the head of SACHi's list for treatment and/or surgery. A list of children requiring treatment is generated on the basis of urgency and long term prognosis. SACHi does not limit its efforts only to those who have been diagnosed at the camps. Children, from economically backward sections, who are brought in to the Apollo Hospitals are also considered for free or subsidized treatment.
FOLLOW UP CARE Continued monitoring of treatment and post-operative care is critical in evaluating a child's progress. SACHi schedules the appointments for follow – up checks and ensures that families keep track of their appointments and treatment of their child. In order to facilitate this further, SACHi established a Telemedicine system that links the doctors and surgeons from the Apollo Hospitals, with the doctors in the district hospitals. This enables those patients who are unable to travel to the city hospital for follow-up care, while at the same time keeps the doctors in the districts abreast of new developments and treatments in heart disease.
Our Vision
TOUCHING YOUNG LIVES To reach out and touch the lives of all those children with heart conditions living in social and economically weak conditions. To provide them with all medical and social needs that will allow them to grow into healthy, strong and fulfilled adults.
n
Our Missio
ANCE H C D N O C EM A SE H T G N I GIV To educate and empower economically backward families, in understanding and addressing paediatric heart disease. To build awareness and find solutions along with individuals, corporate, policy makers, the medical fraternity and the media, to the growing paediatric heart disease situation in India. To train our members and staff and equip them to carry forth this information to backward sections. To provide complete cardiac support from prevention, detection, treatment and follow-up care to all children from economically backward sections, completely free or at a highly subsidised cost. To help rebuild the lives of the families and children socially by providing them with the tools to live a confident and healthy life.
O GIVE T T R A HE E THE V A H U DO YO Each child with heart disease presents different clinical conditions. An open heart surgery could cost ` 1.5 to 1.8 lakhs (approx. US $4,000), and a closed heart or interventional surgery, ` 80,000 to 1 lakh (approx. US $2,500). In highly complex cases expensive valves and conduits become necessary. Such surgeries could cost as much as ` 3 lakhs (US $ 6,000). SACHi undertakes almost 50-60 surgeries a month. And that, is only a scratch on the surface! So what keeps us going? It is our success stories. Of all the children who underwent surgeries, over 98% survived! Of all those children who may not have made it, 50% got a second life! There are more successes out there, waiting for their turn. No donation, contribution, assistance or involvement, is too small or too big for them.

Sponsor a child
Volunteer
The great thing about sponsorships is that you not only give a child a second chance, you watch them grow. Pick a child you believe is most deserving of surgery, from our list. You can meet, encourage and interact with the child and the family. You can follow up on his/her progress in person and we will also keep you posted by email. The very fact that you can be personally involved is what makes this an extremely fulfilling experience. A mere Rs.30,000 can breathe a whole new life into one child !
Volunteers are a great source of strength to SACHi. We are still a young organization and need a lot of your nurturing and support. Depending on your expertise, we could find ways in which you could volunteer with us. Some of current voluntary efforts include:
Donate Donations, unlike sponsorships are not restricted to surgery or to one child. They could contribute to the treatments of many children or towards one portion of a procedure. Every penny counts and no matter what you choose to give, it will be used for maximum benefit.
SACHi Wristbands The objective of the band apart from raising funds for treatment is to spread awareness about paediatric heart disease. Educational institutions, corporate and individuals have all participated in promoting and marketing the bands. We would be glad if you or your organization would like to join us in this campaign. Celebrate Special Occasions With Us Try celebrating this birthday with our young ones, who need
some cheering up. Their joy will probably make yours a landmark birthday! Or maybe you can celebrate Childrens’ Day, Independence Day, Diwali, Dusshera, Christmas! Pick any day, even if there is no special significance to it. That you have chosen to be with them, will make the day, a huge celebration anyway! Educate and Entertain If you are training to be a teacher, nutritionist, medical professional or are a visual artist, theater director or musician, teach our children too! It will nourish their mind and spirit, fill them with joy and confidence, and mostly importantly, give them hope. Kids For Kids Help us with our fundraisers or market our wrist bands. Help us in our fundraising efforts, maybe even organise small ones in your schools or neighbourhoods.
FUNDRAISING SACHi's fundraising efforts help build a corpus that can be immediately extended to multiple treatments, upgradation of services, increasing reach to more backward areas, conducting more medical camps and so on. Over the years, SACHi has initiated and executed many such successful fundraising campaigns and events. The SACHi-Deccan Chroncile Dil Se campaign addressed the issue paediatric cardiac care with the medical vis-a-vis a medical conference and raised funds through a concert. The campaign not just raised funds towards the treatment of 450 children, but spread awareness on paediatric cardiac diseases, amongst different communities around the world.
The Agro Tech Foods ` 1 for every Sundrop Heart Oil campaign was a unique donation drive. Agro Tech Foods Limited (ATFL) India's leading FMCG Company has had heart care as its primary focus and the Sundrop Heart Oil was specifically targeted towards this purpose. Launched on World Heart Day, ATFL's ` 1 for every Sundrop Heart Oil donation drive for SACHi, extended from September 22, 2006 to November 30, 2006. The donations helped us treat over 50 children. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, India and Sony Pictures have been associated with SACHi in many fundraising endeavours. Disney, India and Sony Pictures have hosted exclusive fundraising screenings of Finding Nemo and Ratatouille in Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata
and Ahmedabad. Disney along with Make a Wish Foundation have also volunteered on several occasions organizing fun occasions for children in the company of their famous toon characters Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, the Genie from Alladin and many others. SACHi's evening of Fashion and Art auction with Tarun Tahiliani and Suhel Seth at the Hi-tech Convention Center in Hyderabad, saw the industrial and business lobby in Hyderabad, come forward to support the evening. Collections from the table sales gave SACHi the impetus and
funds to launch its telemedicine center. Radha Realty, ATFL, Radio Mirchi and HUDA campaign with SACHi for the Children's Heart 2 Heart Carnival saw an unprecedented turnout of 4000 children, teachers, parents and supporters join hands for the cause of SACHi. Organized at Damodaram Sanjeeviah Gardens, the aim was to mobilize children from the city and give them a glimpse into the world of children suffering from heart diseases. To inculcate in them a sense of compassion and willingness to help children belonging to the
lower socio-economic groups, and to contribute in whichever way they felt appropriate. The all-day event saw children participate in a host of art, music and costume competitions; dance to Shiamak Davar's Institute of Performing Arts' choreography and meet and chat with icons like Sania Mirza. These are just a few of our efforts in constantly striving to raise funds for children with heart diseases. Several small events are consistently run through the year in our race against time to save a child's heart.
Partner with us, sponsor us, buy or sell tickets for us, bid at our auctions, provide your services to us, advertise with us, participate in our drive with us, because a child's heart needs help now! Treatment cannot wait. It cannot be postponed. If it is, it means we will have lost the opportunity to give yet another child, a chance to live.
