REINCARNATING IDENTITY Engaging traditions in Chinese urban architecture
CONTENTION Architecture reflects culture; through architecture it's possible to gauge many things about a culture, such as lifestyle, artistic sensibilities and social structure. China, an ancient country with over 5,000 years of history, has a profound traditional culture. Meanwhile, Chinese traditional architecture has formed unique characteristics, which are very different from other countries due to influences of politics, economy, religion, geography, and climate. However, with the dramatical development of China nowadays, some traditional architecture and historical relics have been destroyed by the government by not protecting them and giving them away to metropolitan business buildings and high-rise dwellings. Such phenomena are very common, which can be found in almost every city in China. Li-fen dwellings have more than 150 years of history, and are the combination of western Row housing and Chinese traditional courtyard house, which represents regionalism culture of Wuhan. With Wuhan’s growth and expansion, Li-fen in urban centers are facing decline or extinction. Till now, 60% of Li-fen residences have been demolished. Local government declared that demolition is the trend of urban development, because Li-fen residences have occupied prime locations that should be places for high-rise or business building that can bring more benefits to the city. I will argue that, increasing economy of a city at the expense of sacrificing traditional culture is inadvisable. The better way to preserve tradition as well as adapt to today’s society is to create an ecotone program which will keep a balance between stability and change, tradition and innovation. The project I am proposing, “Reincarnating identity : Engaging traditions in Chinese urban architecture,” will analyze current problems occuring in Li-fen dwelling buildings, trying to figure out a new program that can be distilled from traditional buildings, and contain advantages of contemporary dwellings to fit with today’s new needs.

Wuhan is also a multicultural city. Confucianism, Taoism, Zen, Tao and other Chinese traditional aesthetics have had a profound impact on traditional architecture.

This project is about the design of a new home for the International Center for Photography (ICP) in the Meat Packing District (MPD) in Lower Manhattan. The ICP is currently housed in a millennial Gwathmey Siegel designed space located in a Midtown Tower located at the intersection of West 43 Street & Sixth Avenue. With the migration of cultural institutions south of 14 Street in Manhattan, the cultural center of New York has become much more decentralized, no longer collected the Midtown of the Museum of Modern Art. The site for the new ICP will be in Westbeth, the former full block Bell Laboratory located between the West Side Highway and Washington Street, between Bank and Bethune Streets. This part of Westbeth will be the site for the insertion of the new program of the ICP galleries and administration.
Facts about ICP 1. The center was founded in 1974. Before 1999, ICP was located at 1130 Fifth Avenue whose goal was to keep the concerned photography alive 2. Over the years, as ICP continued to develop, further expansion was needed but not possible in the Fifth Avenue location. New location is in midtown Manhattan. 3. in the fall of 2000, the galleries was expanded at 1133 Ave of the Americas to become headquarters of ICP’s public exhibitions program, which also provided an expanded store and café. In the fall of 2001, the expansion of school created a Midtown campus across from the Museum in the Grace Building at 1114 Ave of the Americas.
Facts about West Beth Artists Housing 1. It is the largest artists' community in the world and provides affordable housing for artists and their families. 2. The West Beth artists' community has long been recognized as one of the city's most important creative hubs. “The transformation of Bell Labs into a housing complex for artists was one of the first large-scale adaptive reuse projects of an industrial property in the world, and inspired similar conversions around the United States” 3. THE first section of the new High Line park is moving toward completion, six blocks of hulking elevated rail line along the lower West Side, converted to an urban symphony of walking paths and landscaping — with one exception. Under the artists’ housing complex West Beth, on Washington between Bank and Bethune Streets, one little section of the old rail line continues in a glorious romantic desuetude. In 1931 Bell Laboratories had to partition off space in its building between the second and fifth floors to make way.

BACK TO PINK Student dormitory single room indoor design
This project was about to design an own single dormitory room with personal characteristics in a size 3900mm*5100 mm*4800mm. Since pink is my favourite color and I wanted to accomplish my wish when I was a little girl that I can own a fantastic princess room. There were three zones which incl-uded study, entertainment and sleep in this room. Furnitures were cozy and modern, silk and lace were used in decoration which have added more dreamlike elements to this space.
