The LAUNCHPAD project was an academic thesis project that consisted of two parts: a written thesis essay and the design development of it.

LAUNCHPAD is an interdisciplinary creative hub that was created for interior designers, industrial designers, and graphic designers. I wanted to dedicate this space to artists and designers who were looking for a space to experiment with their creativity and collaborate with other designers in order to improve their creative knowledge and productivity.

DESIGN PROBLEM

Designers today are practicing in a complex and rapidly evolving environment, and societal changes have added to the complexity of design and innovation (Archelphol & Cable, 2018).

Through research, have found that there are not many spaces dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration that allow designers to explore their creativity and themselves as a creative person.

The Avenue Showroom was chosen as the proposed building because its neighborhood has a historical connection to creative culture. As research showed, creative hubs were often established in old industrial buildings as designers and artists sought open studios for artistic expression (Pratt, 2020). The Avenue Showroom and its neighborhood have a similar history to that of creative hubs.

A sun study was conducted to help me understand the relationship of the sun’s path to the building. This study helped me determine the layout of the space and examine what spaces need more natural lighting and what spaces will need more artificial lighting.

Due to surrounding buildings or trees, the amount of sun entering the building may be limited depending on the time of year, such as longer days during the summer months and shorter days during the winter months.

Connectedness refers to the state of being joined or linked, or to a feeling of belonging to or having affinity with a particular person or group.

Launchpad is designed to promote connectedness through the principles of connectivity, collaboration, and intersection. The building is arranged to encourage social interaction and relationship-building, with each space and area carefully located to create pathways and intersections for people to meet and connect.

The ground level is the creative hub’s heart and brain where members can network and collaborate with one another. I wanted to create this space for members to connect with one another and with the environment that they are in. The ground level was designed with an open concept in mind, with different nooks and areas for privacy to accommodate various programs, events, and workshops.

The lack of windows and natural lighting in the cafe/lounge area was one of my concerns when designing the main level. Instead of using solid walls in the Conference Room and Brainstorming Space, I used frosted curtain walls, which provide privacy and noise reduction while still allowing natural lighting to flow throughout the main level.

The Brainstorming Space and the Conference Room were designed to be relaxing, stress-free spaces. The furniture and layout in these areas are casual and comfortable, allowing users to feel relaxed and think freely. The acoustics in these two spaces were also carefully considered to ensure that users feel secure and free from distraction. The carpeted floors and paneled walls absorb reverberation and vibrations, creating a peaceful and productive environment.

also wanted to ensure that users could make the most of every aspect of the space. The glass panels not only provide natural light but also function as whiteboards, allowing users to easily write down and share their ideas. Custom whiteboards were also placed on the brick walls for this purpose. To create an open and connected environment, bi-folding doors were installed in the conference room to connect it to the Brainstorming Space. This allows for open collaboration and networking, while still providing enough privacy for members and teams to work.

The second level contains a variation of dedicated workspaces. wanted the second level to consist of different zones that would allow for collaboration, privacy and most importantly learning/sharing. The second level also contains the materials library.

The dedicated offices offers members to rent the space on a monthly basis, allowing the creative hub to generate revenue.

KITCHENETTE & WORKSTATIONS

In designing the second level work areas, wanted to create a variety of workstations that would support both individual and collaborative work. Teams can brainstorm and design together at the large island in the kitchenette, while the large table space allows them to spread out their work and collaborate with other team members.

Connectivity is an important concept in the creative hub, so I wanted to find ways to connect the main level and the second level. One way I did this was by attaching a tabletop to the railings, which is also connected to the cafe’s ceiling beams on the ground level. This provides a convenient spot for quick conversations and lounging.

For this academic project, I was tasked with designing a shared corporate office space for IQ Business Media. The project included a curated program that I needed to follow, which included dedicated spaces and the company’s vision for rebranding.

IQ Business Media wanted to expand the programming of their business brand by connecting with their audience in more dynamic ways, and to further enhance their position as a partner to national and international design markets.

WHY:

concept // human-experience design

Inspired by culture and community, I have created a humanexperience design for the diverse users of the space.

Human-experience design focuses on the driving factors of behavior, promotes human interaction, and optimizes effectiveness in the workplace. Given IQ Business Media’s reputation for hard work and dedication, it was important to incorporate an open and social environment that allows employees to socialize and collaborate. The focus of this conceptual design is to create a special work environment that will drive people to work and motivate them to achieve great things. These special touches can be found throughout the space in curated designs that prioritize universal functionality.

WHO: WHAT/HOW:

Due to the pandemic, the atmosphere of corporate offices have shifted and has normalized a “home-to-office” work life. Due to this, many factors within the workplace have to be reevaluated and consider the emotional and physical needs of the occupants of the space.

The client, iQ Business Media, a media based publishing company who advertises supply chain markets and Canadian architecture and interiors.

Communication is a huge driving factory of any workplace, let alone a publishing company. My goal is to create a space that everyone can relate to and feel at ease. This will not only be done through careful spatial planning but through the use of mixed fishes and materiality as well as incorporating space where people can connect and build healthy relationships.

5. Integration of biophilic design and recycling materials and finishes

6. Creating personal spaces within the built environment for workers to connect

The new 929 meter squared office will be located on the building’s second level, which contains floor to ceiling windows that will give optimal natural lighting and landscape views that surround the building.

From the second level, occupants of the space will be able to receive plenty of natural lighting and optimal views. The open space on the second level will be able to accommodate the best circulation and will allow occupants of all needs to feel comfortable and welcomed.

As part of the project, I was tasked with creating a design for a restaurant in Copenhagen, Denmark that met the specific requirements of my client. This included creating a layout for the restaurant that maximized the use of space, choosing appropriate furniture and decorations, and selecting a color scheme and design elements that aligned with the overall theme of the restaurant.

Additionally, I was required to take into consideration the unique culture and architecture of Copenhagen, as well as the preferences and needs of my client, to ensure that the restaurant design was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Overall, the goal of the project was to create a restaurant design that would be successful in the Copenhagen market, while also meeting the specific needs and requirements of my client.

With inspiration from Copenhagen’s Botanical Gardens, I have created a memorable botanical design experience for the guests that will go along side a sensory dining experience. Copenhagen’s diverse city, is very well-known to be the happiest city in the world, filled with great locals, that is why it was important to incorporate an open and social environment that allows the guests to socialize with friends as well as meet new people. With FIGO’s strong brand identity, the company prides themselves on their unique romantic feminine features that can be found in FIGO’s Toronto location. Copenhagen’s Botanical Gardens sparked this same romantic environment that FIGO prides themselves on. The focus will be creating a special dining experience perfect for date nights and night outs with friends and family. These special touches can be found within the modern and luxurious materiality used throughout the space.

In our design proposal for our clients’ home, we suggested knocking down some walls to create a more open and spacious atmosphere. The original layout felt cramped and small, but our proposal aimed to make the space feel brighter and more welcoming. We also incorporated various elements and finishes tailored to our clients’ personal style and lifestyle, such as a coffee bar, a window seat in the kitchen, and built-in dog bowls in the kitchen island. This was important in order to create a space that felt curated specifically for our clients and their needs. Overall, our proposal aimed to create a comfortable and inviting home that our clients could enjoy spending time in, whether they were entertaining guests or relaxing on their own.

In order to create a functional and inviting space for our clients’ growing family, we proposed a complete redesign of their home. The original layout was cramped and not conducive to the needs of a large family, so we suggested knocking down some walls to create a more open and spacious floor plan.

Our proposal focused on creating a space that was both practical and conducive to family bonding. We proposed a layout that would allow for easy flow and movement throughout the space where the family could spend time together. We also suggested incorporating modern and comfortable furniture, as well as plenty of storage and workspace to accommodate the needs of the family. Overall, our proposal aimed to create a beautiful and functional home that would be the perfect setting for family gatherings and special occasions.
