{About the Company} What we create. Shifting Status Kuo features light-hearted paper goods & gifts designed by Tiffany Kuo. The growing collection continues to be inspired by everyday objects, playful humor, and Chinese folktales. All screen printed items began as original hand-drawn illustrations that are then exposed onto a silk screen. Each layer of ink is then pushed through the mesh (often by hand with a squeegee) to leave a rich coat of color. Shifting Status Kuo proudly showcases the classic art of screen printing while providing charming designs for you and your loved ones!

Why the name? Tiffany often used the Latin phrase “status quo” to help others pronounce her last name. She also loved the play on words (a common theme in her designs), and thus it became the inspiration for her company’s name. But why all the “shifting” you ask? Well, Tiffany is always striving to make each creation unique and meaningful… she is always looking to improve her art and “shift” her personal status quo. Shifting Status Kuo was launched in windy Chicago in 2011 and is now based in sunny California.
{About Tiffany Kuo} Hello, nice to meet you! Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved drawing, crafting, and making cards for family and friends. However, it was during my college years at School of the Art Institute of Chicago that I fell in love with printmaking… especially screen printing. So, instead of pursuing a gallery artist career to share my artwork, I decided to combine my two passions of screen printing & greeting cards and started Shifting Status Kuo. Knowing that my illustrations are being sent out to the world to brighten someone’s day is very fulfilling. As Shifting Status Kuo grows, I continue to be inspired by silly puns, everyday objects, and how various materials can enhance the message of a design.

Screen printing is versatile for printing rich layers of ink onto a variety of materials like paper, wood, & fabric.

1.
Every design begins as a hand drawn illustration.
2. The design is then exposed onto a prepared screen with UV lights to create a stencil for printing.
3. Every batch of ink is carefully mixed by hand.
4. Every layer of ink is swiftly pushed
through the screen with a squeegee and produce a one-of-a-kind print each time.

Tea Bag Series “Cards as gifts, such as this card with tea, are gaining popularity.” -— Diane Falvey (Gifts and Decorative Accessories, May 2015)
Each card in this series includes a real tea bag for the recipient to enjoy. The tea bags are a pleasant surprise and make the card a little gift in itself! The cards were screen printed with a special “split-fountain” technique so that the metallic silver ink creates a gorgeous gradient with the color below. The “Cup of Thank You - Yellow” card is LOUIE Award finalist in the Thank You category

According to an old Chinese folktale, the Old Man Under the Moonlight (月下老人) is the god of match-making. He carries the Book of Fate along with a large sack of red strings. When babies are born, he consults the Book of Fate then ties red strings to the feet of future couples. Although each person will travel many paths throughout their lives, with the red string connecting them, they are bound by fate to love who the Old Man under the Moonlight has chosen for them. The elegant lines of the heart paired with the story printed on the back make this a versatile card for couples who just “tied the knot”, for a valentine or for your next anniversary.

Butterfly Dream
A famous Chinese philosopher, Zhuang Zhou, fell asleep under a tree and dreamt he was a butterfly flying here and there. The butterfly passed by a tree and saw a man napping. When Zhuang Zhou awoke from his dream, he did not know whether he was himself, dreaming of being a butterfly, or if he was a butterfly dreaming of being a man. What better way to showcase the “butterfly dream” than on pillow case. The LEFT pillow case captures him as a care free butterfly, and the RIGHT pillowcase shows Zhuang Zhou awaking from the nap. A small card with the butterfly dream story will be enclosed with each set so that you or the recipient can ponder the story before drifting into sleep.

{terms & conditions} {PRODUCT DETAILS} • All cards are blank inside and A2 size unless indicated otherwise (4.25” x 5.5” when folded). • Single cards are packaged individually in clear sleeves. • Wood veneer prints are 8.5” x 11”, signed on the back. and packaged in clear protective sleeve with chipboard insert. The wood veneer sheets are thin enough to trim with scissors for smaller frame sizes. • Pillowcases come with both left & right design packaged inside a plastic pillowbox.
