Many things are forgotten in our daily life: they fade under the aura of the well-known, they decline as time goes by, or they are just not attractive enough to catch the eyes of the majority. But they are valuable, retrospective, and enlightening. They shouldn't be forgotten in this way. As a landscape architect, I try to discover or re-discover the forgotten places, consider the forgotten users, and use the forgotten feeling.

The things we remember best are those better forgotten.

The Forgotten Habitat The Little Egret, the Black-crowned Night Heron, and the Cattle Egret are common bird species in central Taiwan. Their habitats include riverbanks, wetlands, rice fields, which could be easily found in Taichung decades ago. But there is a habitat that was forgotten: it locates in the suburban area while it holds the largest traffic volume in Taiwan, it can offer food, water, and space while it is still dangerous. That's Taichung interchange.

The Forgotten Path Paths are "Channels along which the observer customarily, occasionally, or potentially moves" -- Kevin Lynch, The Image of The City

In Tianjin(Tientsin), an impor tant metropolis in North China, we can see the vividness, experience the uniqueness and explore the city through different streets, sidewalks, and roads. But an abandoned cargo railway is forgotten. It, as well as its surrounding area, is lifeless and burdensome now. The site is near the city center and surrounded by residential area. It shouldn't be forgotten like now. What we designer need to do is to revitalize this area and bring it to the public.

The Forgotten Community Dakeng, the one and only mountain attraction in Taichung city area, has more than ten hiking and bicycling trails. However, no visitor center is in Dakeng area. Now that an open space is left to be a parking lot, it will be an ideal place to be a visitor center. But Dakeng belongs to not only the visitors, but also the local community: t h e y n e e d a p l a c e t o d o o u td o o r activities, to learn some new skills, to make new friends, to sell their farming products, to enhance their coherence, to show their special spirit to the outsiders. Except the parking lot, there is no another suitable place to make things above to happen. Besides, if the center was built merely for the visitor, it will be used low-efficiently in weekdays, which is a great loss to the area. So let's see what will happen af ter mixing the use of visitors and the local community.

The Forgotten Sense When we enter a landscape space, we see the organization and appearance, we touch the texture of the bricks or plants, we smell the fragrance of flowers or weeds, we even taste the snacks or meal from local farm or industry. But we seldom focus on our ears: even though hundreds of sounds pass through our ears every day, we don't use it as a method to experience the space around us. When we close our eyes, we see nothing. But when we put on earplugs, we can still hear something. The aural sense is too important to be forgotten. So we design a park to arouse people's hearing than other senses.

TRANSFORMING SOUNDS Shuinan Soundscape Park Landscape Design Type: Group Work | Academic (Landscape Design Studio VI) Location: Xitun District, Taichung, Taiwan Area: 21.55 ha Project Time: Sept. 2017 - Apr. 2018 (Senior Year) Instructor: Rachel Lee Group Member: Ying-Wei Chung Individual Contribution: Theory Study, Concept, Site Analysis (Part), Master Plan, Sections, Perspectives, Planting Design (Part), Installations Design (Part)

What is Soundscape?

Soundsape, the combination of "sound" and "scape", is the the acoustic environment that can be perceived by humans. It focus on seeking the harmony between human society and sonic environment.

To d a y a l l s o u n d s b e l o n g t o a continuous field of possibilities lying within the comprehensive dominion of music. Behold the new orchestra: the sonic universe! And the musicians: anyone and anything that sounds!

R. Murray Schafer, composer, writer, and environmentalist

The Soundscape: Our sonic environment and the tuning of the world , 1977

The sonic environment, as well as the nonvisual environment in general, is concluded to be an important area for new design work because of its apparently important effects on visual perception and because it may be an economical way of increasing persons? delight and acceptance of the city without massive and costly redevelopment of the visible form.

Concepts of Soundscape

from the book The Soundscape: Our sonic environment and the tuning of the world

Re-definition

Sound is a noun straightforwardly linked with aural sense. However, sound can not only be heard, but other senses can also perceive sound directly or indirectly. In this graduate thesis, we want to explore the importance of sound in shaping the space as well as the possibility of being recognized by users. After reading some books and papers, we re-categorize the concept of soundscape (in the right figure):

Keywords of Site Selection

Neat & Simple - the fewer existing sounds, the better Attractive & Accessible - to affect more people's attitudes towards sound

According to the overlay-mapping result, there are 3 lines which are suitable for building a zip-line. But the west line and the middle line is hard for visitors to arrive. Also, there are no other travel destinations around. So the east line, which is located near some aboriginal sightseeing sites and major roads, becomes the ideal place to build a zip-line.

According to the statistics from Group of Tourist in Landscape Studio V, Estimated data in SML Area in 2022: total tourist amount: 12,142,144 daily peak tourist amount: 71910 Estimated participation rate of zip-line: 0.45% Daily peak tourist amount of zip-line: 71910*0.45%=324 The opening hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The opening minutes: 480 min The participating minutes: 5min Turnover rate: 480 min / 5 min = 96 Daily peak instantaneous tourist amount: 324/96=3.375 The amount is too small to set a single parking lot. The tourists can share the existing parking lot with nearby Takmazuan Tribe. The cost of building a zip-line depends on the length and the difference between altitudes. Normally, a 200-meter-long or 300-meter-long zip-line costs from 0.9 million NTD to 1 million NTD. The zip-line proposed by our group is about 670 meters long so the cost is about 2 million NTD. The service life of zip-line is about 3 years. According to the statistics above, the total participants amount in zip-line=12,142,144(total tourist amount) * 0.45%(par ticipation rate)=54,640. The price is 200 NTD each time. The revenue is about 11 million NTD. After 3 years, the revenue is about 33 million NTD. The profit = 33-2=31 million NTD.
