Why Quito? Quito was chosen as the city to host the 2036 Summer Olympics for its unique history, geography and for what it represents. Quito is the capitol of Ecuador and is a bustling city nestled in the Andes Mountains. The city has the second highest population of any city in Ecuador and it is vibrant with life and activity. In this capitol city, the largest and most-well preserved historic center in the Americas lies at the heart of it. This center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on September 18, 1978. With such a rich history, combined with new traditions developed and adopted over the years, Quito has become a melting pot of culture and history. It is rich with indiginous art and traditions coupled with the new. Its monastaries alone boast of a combination of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and Indigenous art. This blend of old and new is why it was the perfect choice to house the Olympic games since the same values are shared and promoted.

Behind the Design Inspired by Quito’s unique blend of cultures and the overlap of old and new found throughout the city, the design behind the 2036 Olympics reflects coming together, uniting amidst differences and creating something new and beautiful. The brand utilizes the transparent overlap of colors representing different peoples and cultures coming together and maintaining their unique individuality while working with others to do something great. The triangular shapes found throughout the brand reflect Quito’s history, emulating patterns found in indiginous textile and folk art. The shape of the flames from the torch are also a design element found throughout the design, reflecting the Olympic ideal of carrying on the traditions of the past into the future. This is also echoed in the ideals of the city of Quito and so it is can be frequently identified throughout the brand.

The logo was inspired by Quito’s indigenous textile and folk art. The triangular forms create a stylized Olympic torch, which symbolizes the movement of the games from the ancient past into the future and the unity of humanity in carrying these games on. The transparent colors the logo is composed of represent different cultures and countries coming together and overlapping to be unified in the common goal of competing at the Olympics.
