Alexander Wang Hit With $50 Million Lawsuit, Is Accused of Running Sweatshop By Dhani Mau

In perhaps the most bizarre and shocking news to come out of this fashion month, beloved New York fashion designer Alexander Wang has been hit with a $50 million labor lawsuit, the Daily News and New York Post are reporting. Wenyu Lu, a 56-year-old Wang employee from Queens, was allegedly being forced to work 84-hour weeks in Wang’s Chinatown studio, which the Daily News describes as a “Broadway sweatshop,” and once passed out after working a 25-hour day. Wenyu Lu’s lawyer told the paper he hopes to get more employees to sign on to file a class action lawsuit against the company. The Post‘s report, however, says Wang is being charged by “30 workers,” including Lu, all of whom claim they were “forced to work 16 hours a day or longer — without overtime — in a suffocating, windowless, 200-square-foot room.” Lu also says he was hospitalized for several days after passing out and that the company threatened to fire him if he didn’t follow orders, one of which was to “’knit and perfect’” a pair of leather trousers in four hours — a job that normally takes 12 hours.” The Post reports that Lu was ultimately fired on February 16. Alexander Wang’s camp did not provide any comment for either story. We have reached out to them and will report back once we know more.

Fashion Critic Robin Givhan Says Bloggers are Too Cozy With the Designers They Report On By Hayley Phelan

The question of personal style bloggers’ editorial integrity is as relevant as ever, and as the importance of bloggers shows no sign of abating, more and more industry players are weighing in on the subject. The latest is Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Robin Givhan, who told the Toronto Star that “[bloggers] are too cozy with the designers on whom they report.” According to the Star, Givhan doesn’t follow bloggers and she’s uncomfortable with their growing authority in the fashion industry–particularly when it comes to “reviewing” shows, for which they’ve essentially been paid (in the form of free flights and clothing) to attend. “I like to think that journalists understand the importance of keeping an arm’s length between critics and designers,” Givhan told the paper. But it’s this distance that Givhan says is missing when it comes to bloggers’ ethos. According to the Star, “Givhan has read blog posts that wax enthusiastic about an item the blogger has received as a gift from the design house…It annoys her…that a platform for fashion conversation bypasses both criticism and opinion — and goes straight to advertising.” It’s true that despite the Federal Trade Commission’s guidelines, the lines of editorial integrity can get fuzzy for bloggers–something we’ve explored before. The Star has another bone to pick with bloggers: Namely, that many of them are not qualified (either in experience or skill set) to offer valuable criticism or insight on the fashion shows they attend–something Givhan seems to agree with. “It’s got to be more than just ‘I loved it or I hated it,’ ”Givhan told the paper. “You’ve got to explain your thinking — how you got there. Criticism is not personal opinion. At its best it’s opinion based on a set of facts that are set in context. I’ve seen shows that I’ve loved but I knew that critically they were not great. And vice versa.” Givhan’s sage words should certainly be heeded by all critics and journalists–not just bloggers. On the other hand, we doubt that anyone is visiting personal style blogs for thoughtful and seasoned critiques on the collections. We can’t argue that bloggers increasingly occupy more space within fashion media, but are they really thought of as fashion critics? We’re not so sure. 2012 FEBRUARY URBANMAINSTREAM.com

Sneaky Trend to Shop Now: Sneaker Wedges By Hayley Phelan

Fashion industry folk are not known for their love of comfortable footwear. Actually, a few seasons ago it would have been unthinkable to wear your running shoes around during fashion week (unless you’re Taylor Tomasi Hill and then you may proceed). But this season, every editor and fashion industry insider is running around wearing *gasp* sneakers. Of course they’re not just regular old gym shoes. They’ve got a little something extra. About three inches of hidden wedge, to be exact. And we have the doyenne of all things cool, Isabel Marant to thank for it: She kicked off the trend with her covetable Willow sneaker wedges, which retail for $760–that is if you’ve been lucky enough to snap them up already: The shoe has been so soughtafter that your best bet for scoring the covetable kick is to start scouring eBay, where prices seem to hover at a cool grand. Sigh, only Marant could get a bunch of stiletto addicts to ditch their sky-high heels for a bunch of comfy sneaks.

FAST AND FURIOUS BADASS I'm the REAL Victim in Hermes Ladies Purse Scam source: www.fashionnews.com

The gun-toting, Vin Diesel-hating villain from “The Fast and The Furious” is now a major player in the dangerous world of women’s fashion accessories … and TMZ has learned he’s now at the center of a lawsuit involving the most COVETED purse on the planet. Rick Yune — who played Asian gang leader Johnny Tran in the 2001 flick — is being sued by a husband and wife duo from London who claim they struck a deal with Yune to buy 10 Hermes Birkin handbags in October 2011. MANSLATION: The Hermes Birkin bags are the Holy Grail of hand bags … famously prized by Samantha in “Sex and the City” … and with a super-long waiting list, they’re virtually IMPOSSIBLE to obtain. The London couple claim they wired Yune $198k for the first 8 bags … and promised to pay him another $95k for 2 additional bags upon delivery. According to the lawsuit, filed in L.A. County Superior Court and obtained by TMZ, the couple claims they NEVER got the bags … and Yune never returned their cash. The Brits are suing for their money back … plus damages. But Yune is calling BS … a rep for the actor tells TMZ the actor insists he DID deliver the bags to a man who works for the couple … and Yune believes that particular employee ran off with the goods. The rep adds, “Rick is not only a very successful actor and businessman, he is one of the most honest people out there. It’s a shame someone is trying to tarnish his name and he has fallen victim to a scam.”

Industry profile SOCIAL CAUSE Politik me

Fashion designers make a statement by adopting social causes source: www.fashionnews.com

Today, adopting a “cause” is perhaps the fastest way to make a statement - even a fashion statement. Fashion designers want to use their fame and creative genius to do some social good and at the top of the heap are talented women designers, who have aligned themselves with issues as diverse as female foeticide and education to saving the fast-disappearing breed of film poster artists. Fashionistas of the West may have set the trend - what with the like of Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and leading designer Vera Wang lending their name to the Fashion & Friends for Japan initiative, in support of the earthquake and tsunami victims - but our desi counterparts are certainly not to be ignored. Mumbai-based designer Archana Kochhar works with the NGOs, Beti, a social movement against female foeticide, and Nanhi Kali, which is dedicated to ensuring primary education for underprivileged girl children. Says Kochhar, “Today even though we call ourselves a progressive country we have places where a girl child is killed soon after birth. And there are girls who are excluded from education because they are married off as soon as they reach puberty. I have a daughter and I know how precious she is to us. In my own way I am trying to make people aware of this curse in our society.” Sabah Khan, a Mumbai couturier is just 22 years, but her work has already caught the eye of none other than His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. Khan came into the limelight when she presented her debut collection, titled ‘No Class’, at last year’s Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai. Her inspiration: the inhabitants of Dharavi’s slums. Ever since she was a student of the NIFD in Mumbai, she had wanted to do something to highlight the plight of those forced to live in slums. And so she did with her designs. For that collection, the prints on her garments were pictures of children from the slums. Khan has been a part of various projects of the RACH Charity Foundation that develops and supports community-based initiatives for the social and economic development of mainly slum locations in India. There’s another young designer who is fervently seeking this feel-good factor from her work. It’s Delhibased Nida Mahmood, who has decided to speak up for the fast-disappearing breed of artists, who hand-paint Hindi film posters. “Poster artists went out of work 10 years ago and my endeavour is to bring their art back into circulation,” she says.

16 URBANMAINSTREAM.com february 2012

So, along with artist Raul Chandra, Mahmood has set up a trust, the New India Bioscope Company, with five poster artists from Delhi and two from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Just like Khan has pictures of slum children on her clothes, Mahmood has Bollywood posters painted on her designer-wear. And, according to Mahmood, 75 per cent of what she gets from the sale of her poster-art products goes towards the welfare of these artists. There are designers like the Ahmedabad-based Purvi Doshi, whose particular interest lies in handwoven fabrics and handcrafted works - like Mashru of Gujarat, Luckhnawi of Uttar Pradesh, Ikkat of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, woven kota of Madhya Pradesh, khand of Pune (Maharashtra) and leheriya of Rajasthan. Of course, the one woman whose name one cannot ignore while talking of the revival of Indian weaves is Delhi-based design diva Ritu Kumar. Known for her ethnic creations, Ritu has been lending a helping hand to several grassroots artisans. She has helped revive traditional Indian crafts like block prints, chikankari, zardozi and kalamkari. And at the recent Wills LifeStyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) she presented a Kanjeevaram weaves collection, in order to help contemporarise this weave and bring its weavers to into the spotlight. South Indian designers too are trying to make a difference. Deepika Govind has been working with different weavers to experiment with fabric and also dyes. Says she, “Such specialised weavers need committed support from the design community to survive. Environment too has emerged on the runway. Designers like Mumbaibased Anita Dongre have gone green with their creations. There are several other designers, both male and female like Sanchita Ajjampur, Anupama Dayal, Kallol Dutta, Soumitra Mondal, Wendell Rodricks, Imcha Imen, and Digvijay Singh who are trying to do something for the greater social good.

3 mONTH MODEL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The model development program was designed to assist new and aspiring models with an opportunity to enter into the industry the best ways possible. Models are often taken advantage of, mislead, and scammed out of their monies for services they do not gain the full benefit. New models are promised the world all in order to get them to open their pocket books. Many models are often maneuvered into doing sexual favors in order to get access to opportunities. Throughout my years I have studied the comings and goings of models. I’ve watched many go places but most I’ve seen trapped into a downward spiral. There are so many hopefuls in this business. They all feel they have what it takes to make it. It’s the story of the dreamers. Dreamers see the world as an unique unto themselves experience. They jump into this industry with open arms and gullible senses. I’ve sat down with models from different levels. Trying to understand how they think and what overall motivated them to pursue their dreams. I am a strong believer in living out your dreams but I am an even stronger believer in making the right moves. This business is full of sharks. Often the dreamers are the “trout” in the field of “killer sharks”. When they see these dreamers they smell blood. The problem time and time again is that a dreamer is open to being told anything that sounds real good. Good being mainly anything that will aid the “shark” into misleading, using and exploiting the dreamer. I designed the program to be about proper photographic images, posing, presentation, professionalism, networking, and building value in their personal brand. Over a period of 3 months we conduct 1 to 2 hour consultations, mock interviews, goal settings and good old fashioned straight talk. I’m very serious about models learning the business. I don’t believe in telling them things that are full of nonsense. I want them to meet the challenge and be successful. I don’t want them to act like babies or need to be hand held. Their survival in this business is about them being able to tough it out and being able to earn their way to success. So many of them just assume they should get opportunities vs outright earning them. This program is about being real. Being real with yourself and being real with the people you have to deal with. Best Styles For Your Body Shape By Catherine Conelly source: www.sheknows.com

If you want to look your best, determining your body type is a fashion must. “Finding clothes that fit your body will dramatically change how fabulous you look,” says Dawn Del Russo, beauty and fashion guru featured in InStyle, Elle and Life & Style. Learn how to determine and best dress your body shape.

love your body shape

Knowing your body type, the styles that flatter it and the fashion trends that don’t work for you make all the difference when dressing for your shape. With determining your body type comes embracing your curves, wearing clothes that accentuate your best features and loving your body that much more. Bring down those walls and spend some time in front of the mirror evaluating your features (not criticizing them). In the end, your body type could be your new best friend.

How to Determine your body shape

Women come in all different shapes and sizes, but these can be narrowed down to these five general categories. Keep in mind that you might be a mix; not every woman falls into a single category.

36 URBANMAINSTREAM.com FEBRUARY 2012

Apple bodyshape •Body traits: The upper body is larger than the lower, hips are slim, and chest is on the larger side. Shoulders tend to be broad. Weight gain usually occurs above the waist in the mid sections and in the rear. •Your secret weapon: Those legs! •Your goals: Elongate the torso, show off your legs and downplay mid-section weight and shoulder width.

pear bodyshape

•Body traits: The lower body is larger than the upper, hip width exceeds shoulder width, and hips and butt are rounded with a defined waist. The chest and belly are fairly flat. •Your secret weapon: Shoulders, torso and flat stomach •Your goals: Show off arms, add shape to your upper body and down play wide hips to heighten upper body features.

hourglassbodyshape •Body traits: The upper and lower body have similar proportions, while the waist remains narrow. Any extra weight in the hourglass figure usually lies in the hips, thighs and chest area. •Your secret weapon: Curves, curves and more curves. •Your goals: Find a middle ground between baggy, drab clothing and overly sexy clothing. Show off your curves, balance the weight of your curves, complement your curves... did we mention your curves?

rectangle bodyshape

•Body traits: The waist, hip and shoulder widths are similar to each other, usually on the slim side. Extra weight in the rectangle shape tends to hang out in the stomach and back regions. Some rectangles have smaller breasts, but this is not always true. •Your secret weapon: Your arms and legs. Because you don’t need to minimize any body features, you have more freedom than the other body shapes to experiment with different trends and styles. •Your goals: Create curves, show off slender legs and arms

wedgebodyshape •Body traits: Also known as the inverted triangle, this body shape features a broad upper body, large chest and wide shoulders. The waist and hips are smaller in proportion to upper body features. •Your secret weapon: Your legs •Your goals: Accentuate your lower body, and distract from broad shoulders and possibly boyish upper body. 2012 FEBRUARY URBANMAINSTREAM.com

Best Styles For Your Body Shape sTYLES FOR BODY SHAPE CONTINUED

By Catherine Conelly source: www.sheknows.com

Beauty and fashion expert Dawn Del Russo offers a few tricks of the trade for styling your unique figure. “Sometimes, it’s a matter of a quick trip to the tailor,” she says. “Finding the style that works best for your shape makes a dramatic difference.”

Style tips for your figure

APPLE SHAPE

If you have an apple-shaped body like Jennifer Hudson: •DON’T bring attention to your waist. •DO go for v-neck tops. They create the illusion of a longer torso. •DO look for v-neck wrap-style tops with cinching on the sides. •DO wear belts at the smallest part of your waist. •DO conceal tummy bulge by wearing empire tops and dresses. •DON’T wear oversized empire tops. •DO wear low-rise jeans and pants in a straight leg. They are chic and stylish for most shapes. •DO wear shorter skirts to show off your legs. This takes attention away from and disguises the midsection.

PEAR SHAPE If your body is pear-shaped like Kim Kardashian’s: •DON’T wear clothing that draws attention to hips and thighs. •DO look for boat neck tops, square and cowl necklines. •DO wear strapless dresses. They show off arms and even out proportions. •DO try styles with ruffles on top. This also evens out proportions. •DO experiment with light-colored tops and dark-colored bottoms for contrast. •DO wear jackets that hit right above the waist. •DO rock a pair of straightleg jeans. •DO try a-line skirts, which camouflage wider hips.

38 URBANMAINSTREAM.com FEBRUARY 2012

HOUR GLASS SHAPE If your body is hourglass-shaped like Beyonce’s: •DON’T hide your curves. •DO wear fitted dresses. •DO wear a belt at the waist to enhance your hourglass shape. •DON’T wear baggy clothing. •DO try wrap dresses. •DO go for high-waisted skirts to show off your hips. •DO pick thin, lightweight styles and fabrics. •DO wear skinny or straightleg jeans.

RECTANGLE SHAPE If your body is rectangle-shaped like Natalie Portman’s: •DO wear scoop neck and sweetheart tops. It helps create curves. •DON’T go braless. •DO wear long jackets to create a lean look. •DO wear skinny, low-rise jeans. •DO wear tops with collars, ruffles and details to flatter your chest. •DON’T wear overwhelming styles. •DO layer! It gives your rectangle figure more dimensions. •DO wear dresses with ruching. Cinches on sides are ideal.

WEDGE SHAPE If you have a wedge (or inverted triangle) body like Audrina Patridge’s: •DO wear full skirts. •DO wear tops that call attention to your waistline. •DON’T wear spaghetti-strap tops. •DO experiment with high-waisted styles. •DON’T wear boat neckline tops. •DO wear wideleg pants, which even out body proportions. •DON’T be afraid to bring attention to your waist. It draws the attention downward. •DO wear bright colors on bottom.

In the beginning of all things we find ourselves finding examples by which to follow. As human beings we are hot wired to study those who came before us. This in essence is the fact regarding Urban Mainstream magazine. Three years ago the magazine and its concept of diversity and individuality all under one roof was not present. Magazine publishing via an online outlet was in many cases something more for major print magazines to explore. Many of those magazines found at that time still did not grasp the understanding of an online publication online. As technology grew and the creative eye of those wanting to bring to life the online world of publications. The seed of thought manifested for Urban Mainstream magazine. A magazine which focused on the fashion, modeling, and entertainment world from a different angle. A magazine with no real motivation to become a print publication but rather a strong publication whereas readers could find things in it similiar to what they were familiar with and then those things that were new to them.

sportswear 2012 source: www.MillionLooks.com

Sporty fashion has always been with us. But if a couple of years ago designers made weak attempts to popularize comfy sportswear, today this type of clothing is top trendy and everybody accepts it. Maybe it is the influence of the Olympics or something else but sporty outfits are going to be as trendy as flirty asymmetrical dresses this summer.

Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, Phillip Lim, Rag & Bone, Victoria Beckham and many other designers included sporty fashion into their Spring/ Summer 2012 collections. Functional and minimalistic, sportswear will become a must-have for the warm season this year.

Sporty clothes you can go for this spring should be comfy, stylish and feminine (or androgynous). They can be sexy and chic as well as unusual and interesting. Opt for form-fitting and sleek pieces but avoid slouchy ones (these were popular last season). Look for great, high quality fabrics like leather, silk, and jersey. Add a little sheerness to attract attention. 42 URBANMAINSTREAM.com FEBRUARY 2012

Some footwear producers use metallic toes for practical purposes, to make their shoes more durable. But during Spring/ Summer 2012 fashion season metallic toes will also be very trendy and designers decided to bring metallic toes to a new, more glamorous level. Spring/ Summer 2012 Shoe trend #2: Pointed toes. For a couple of seasons in a row rounded toes have been on top of the list. Now finally we see the change towards pointed toes which are much sexier and feminine. Pointed toes will be featured on shoes mostly. Sandals and booties will still have rounded toes.

BRAIDED SANDALS

Spring/ Summer 2012 Shoe trend #3: Braided sandals. It’s been a long time since we last saw braided sandals in designer collections. But it seems that during Spring/ Summer 2012 they are making a huge comeback. Bright colors and unusual ways of braiding make these incredibly hot for the approaching season. Spring/ Summer 2012 Shoe trend #4: Super mega platforms. Such platforms aren’t exactly in Lady Gaga’s style but they do look weird. They aren’t very comfortable to wear and hardly look womanly at all. But tastes differ and we are sure there are fans of this type of shoes, too. Spring/ Summer 2012 Shoe trend #5: Transparent shoes. Last spring some designers made attempts to make transparent shoes popular but no one took them seriously. For Spring/ Summer 2012 number of such designers has increased dramatically and now we understand that last season the shoes made of sheer vinyl were just the first fruits we were afraid to try.

Rivets can be small and almost invisible or large and made to focus attention on them. Find your way of wearing rivets this season.

Spring/ Summer 2012 Shoe trend #8: Lacing. Yes, lacing still keeps it high position in the world of fashion. We see lots of it on shoes and sandals but it’s no longer as trendy on boots. How To Choose Summer Hat For Your Face Shape SOURCE: WWW.millionlooks.com

Hat is an accessory that plays both aesthetic and practical roles. All women can look good in a hat if it is chosen correctly. The tips we offer here are to help you understand and choose the style of a hat that will fit your face shape and make you look stunning. With the recent climatic changes the weather in many regions has become really unpredictable and often much hotter in summer than before. So, it’s quite essential to protect oneself from extreme heat and sunrays. A hat can be a perfect accessory to avoid sunstrokes but lots of women prefer not to wear it because they believe none of hat styles can look good on them. That’s totally false, and to prove my words I’m ready to give you a number of tips on how to choose a summer hat for different face shapes. Summer Hats for Round Face To flatter your face shape opt for hats with wide brims such as fedoras, cowboy and sun hats. The best way to wear such hats is with a slight slant. Hats with low crowns and small brims are to avoid. Summer Hats for Oblong Face Oblong-faced girls should stay away from square hats as those tend to elongate the face. Instead try hats with a medium or low crown. Wide brims could be a great option as well, because they balance the vertical length of a long face. Hats with bows, flowers or other ornamentations will make you look stunning. Summer Hats for Square Face The best style of a hat for square faces is the one with wide brims. Another possible choice is a hat with lots of curves. Square-shaped hats are to avoid.

HOWDOISELLMYSELF Modeling is a very competitive business. In a field where everyone within 2 feet of a photographers’ lens believe they are or will become the next “it” in the world of modeling. It is very interesting seeing how aspiring models of all ages become so fixated on becoming that one. Amazing enough with all of the excitment. So many aspiring models miss the valued points of how to make it in this business. Beyond the fanfare and the “hoorah” of the photoshoots, hair styling, makeup and exciting events. Most forget that this is still a business. Like most businesses where it can be dog eat dog. You have to come with a game plan to survive. A great deal of work goes into planning out the who, what when, where and why of this business. Not doing so will definitely put you in the special group of the “wanna be” or “wish they could be” crowd. Modeling is about a specific set of skills, attitude and realizations. You have to deal with the age issue. Am I too young or too old? Do I fit this look or do I fit that one? How do I position myself when age and the perception of age is an issue. Then there are the issues of having patience but then having an aggressive enough alter ego to lock in opportunities. It can be hard switching between personalities needed to survive in this business. A soft spoken person must be able to switch into a lion. A lion may need to tame down their approach. A self centered person may need to relinquish some of their self for the benefit of the project, team or company. Then we are dealing with age old personal issues of how we see ourselves. Better yet, how we believe others may see us. Am I too skinny? Am I too fat? Should I wear this or that? I don’t like my chin, eyes, nose, ears and the list goes on. I wander if people will like me? There are so many things to consider when you embark on the quest to model. Unfortunately, these things must be addressed. Your look and perception you have of it has a lot of impact on HOW YOU SELL YOURSELF. The confidence to promote and market yourself is directly related to your personal view of yourself. You can end up being your greatest asset or liability. It is all about your ability to know, love and respect what you have been blessed with. Then after that, sell your self like your going out of style. by Glen Paul

Mary Lou, when working with photographers you have to take into consideration the work that is about to be done and how you as a hairstylist benefit from it. Although your work looks beautiful, it’s barely visible. How would someone know to hire you if they can’t see the work in your portfolio? When doing TF’s or any photo shoots, it would be within your best interest to review the concept of the shoot with the photographer before going forward because when you don’t, it’s just a waste of time.

Sweetp Hair, when entering in the entertainment industry as a hairstylist, it is imperative that you show versatility or else this will be a downfall. It’s understood that the photos of your models may not be the best due to the fact that you are new to the industry but the goal is to intrigue the audience that you are attempting to work with and limit yourself to one race or ethnicity.

""report: Scams and Badbusiness KANAKO, the same model, same hair texture, and most of the same styles does not help your portfolio at all. In fact, I thought it was the model’s portfolio! I see more of the model than the hairstyling work. Your portfolio made me very interested in the model and the photographer and less interested in you. It’s all about presentation and versatility. You need to have both in order to make your work pop! Next time you shoot with a photographer, make sure he has at least a little interest in showing your work instead of making another portfolio for Geisha.

photographers

mwh Photograghy MM# 761760 ModelMayhem.com

MWH, your photography work has shown to be poorly done. This is because models are badly posed, with too much light exposed on some photographs and not enough exposed on others. A photographer should have some idea of what a good pose should look like, in your portfolio it appears no one had a clue. Also do you know how to touch-up a photograph? Models are being negatively represented in your photographs. The work done in your portfolio appears as if an amateur had taken them. It would be greatly appreciated if you worked on your photography skills better or just put down the camera.

Traveling Stylist, your work is beautiful but it is a shame that the models are in the dark and the styles are barely visible. How is this benefiting you? When working with photographers, take into consideration how his/her work can add to your portfolio. Ask the photographer to also take headshots of the models. This would help your portfolio and not just theirs

Donald, as a photographer, your work looks so amateur. The photography of the women looks so sub-par. The posing, styling, hair, and makeup of the models are ridiculously low budget. Many of these women believe they are so close to making it as a model because some photographers fill their heads with high hopes. In most cases it is always “Guys with Cameras” who just take pictures for sport and play while showing themselves off as knowledgeable professionals. It would be wise to learn from other experienced photographers. Your current presentation shows you need advice and better instructions on how to be a more skillful practitioner of photography.

DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME MODEL BOOT CAMPS AND SEMINARS A lot of models looking for ways to improve themselves often seek out modeling schools, so-called model boot camps and seminars. They do so hoping to gain more training, insight and and direction in making it in the business. Models often go in aimlessly into these programs with high hopes of being able to run and conquer the world. However, models never take into account what they are learning and how affective it will be in this business. New and aspiring models need to investigate programs thoroughly prior to spending money. Modeling programs should have a very specific end game. Inclusive of specific details on what the model will be doing and how that will benefit them. If the model commits to 100% participation they should be able to expect the same from the program they choose to participate. Often these sponsors of boot camps and seminars are more concerned with getting the model’s money. A lot of these model hopefuls leave these programs more unprepared and filled with unrealistic expectations. Spending hundreds of dollars on “smoke” filled promises. However, it is sad that so many models will overlook reason to do what they want. Unfortunately, doing what you want can end up being more costly and troublesome than you can imagine. Research is key and no matter the advice. It is important for a model to evaluate all options before they commit to an boot camp, seminar or program designed to improve their modeling.

be a model : Personality, Posing and Facial Expressions.

A model’s greatest assets are their ability to convey the energy of a unique personality, capture the personality via Posing and allow Facial expressions to sum up the whole story. Often we find models who do not thoroughly understand the importance of truly being a model. They are more concerned with building a portfolio of pictures vs building their skills in the area of Personality, Posing and Facial expression. A lot of aspiring models will never achieve success and obtain the big dollars they are aiming for without first proving they can command their own personal image. A model is the walk, the talk, the motion, the attitude and the style. A model is not a “deer” stuck in headlights. Nor are they stiff back giraffs and stumbling gorillas. Models are graceful. They are chameleons. They are the voice and image of the product or service. A true model can sell a product or service with their look, expression and body language. A model is about pushing themselves and proving their worth. A model shows their value not in the negative exploitation of their sexual parts or vulgarness. A model adds value. A model is educated about their field of endeavor. A model is about re-inventing themselves and meeting personal challenges to be the best at all cost.

Karthy Amarati (Book Publisher) I’m sure we’d both agree model photographers and posing models themselves are paid extremely well – if they’re good at what they do. But what makes the difference between a weekend hack and a super model or photographer to the stars? I’ve pondered this question, as I’m sure you have, for a great while and with all the models and photographers I’ve studied, I’ve invariably come to the same conclusion every time. In short, anyone at the top of their game has invested a great deal of time and energy into studying their craft. With that in mind, I think I might have taken this to the extreme… I’m pretty much a modeling fanatic. The truth is I’m always on the internet looking at anything and everything I can find on modeling and model photography.

WALKING IN HEELS

The worse thing in the world to see in a model is one who cannot properly walk in heels. Walking, posing, and having grace in your heels is so important. As a model, you will spend 90% of your time in heels. Those of you who do runway really need to make sure you are properly addressing the issue of walking properly in heels. I want every model to really look at these videos and compare how you walk in your heels. Having grace, poise and elegance in your shoots. Then ladies consider the fact of when you go on networking functions for clients or just for yourself. People are always watching. We are currently planning more editorial, fashion, commercial shoots and media events where our current and new readers will get a chance to explore these great talents. Our overall goal is to maintain DIVERSITY in our approach. When we say DIVERSITY it is more about the mixture of talents than that of models based on race or ethnic background. We want to expose rising, established and curious talents to each other. Whether you are in Russia, Germany, United Kingdom, Isreal, China, Bogata, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada or the United States. Our mission is to expose your talents. Open up a bridge of exchange. Each issue of the magazine we will further our reach. Seeking out those from around the globe who want to be seen and heard. The FACES OF URBAN MAINSTREAM is all about the cause of the many. We are all at heart driven to explore beyond our own worlds. The reality however is that most do not know how. Connecting our worlds through our crafts is both inspiring and unlimited. Urban Mainstream magazine is about the faces of the MANY. Seeing in each of us that which God has gifted our hands and minds to create. To connect us beyond borders, ideology, race, ethnicity and financial status. As we are inspired we are driven to impact the world around us. It is the lack of inspiration which dulls the senses of society into boredom and decadence. It is the lack of true inspiration which drives us away from our passions as human beings and true creatures of God. We are many yet we are one. In this is the ILLUMINATION OF MIND, BODY AND SOUL.
