CATERPILLAR LAUNCHES MARINE DIESEL ELECTRIC PROPULSION (DEP) ENGINES The Cat® 3500 engine series has been recognized as the commercial marine industry leader since its initial manufacture in the 1970s. The latest step in the evolution of the engine line is the launch of the Cat 3512C and 3516C Diesel Electric Propulsion (DEP) engines to better meet critical customer requirements and further the commitment by Caterpillar to sustainable development. Available for a variety of commercial applications and megayachts, the DEP engines build on the proven reliability and durability of the 3500 engine platform while meeting EPA Tier 2 and IMO Tier I regulations. Built by the best, for the best Manufactured at the Lafayette Engine Center in Lafayette, Indiana, USA, the constant-speed DEP engines offer the latest in EUI fuel system capabilities and state-of-the-art ADEMTM A3 Electronic Control Units (ECU). The vee-12, 4-stroke 3512C engines are available at 1360 ekW, 1550 ekW, and 1700 ekW, and the vee16, 4-stroke 3516C engines are available at both 2000 ekW and 2250 ekW.

All engine ratings are certified to the E2 emissions cycle. The electronic “power station” concept creates efficiencies between the control units, unit injectors, instrumentation and displays to perfectly balance power supply, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions at any given load. A win-win situation for operators and the environment Operators of diesel electric propulsion engines understand the inherent advantages of their use: additional safety of operators, lower noise and vibration levels, and driving efficiencies by leveraging electronic technology and the overall system design. However, the largest benefit of the diesel electric power plant may be the redundancy of the engine power generation because the diesel electric engines are turned on only as they are needed. So if an engine is lost, there is still enough power generated to provide power for shaft lines and vessel electronics. Additionally, the EUI fuel system capabilities and ADEM ECU deliver more available power while achieving outstanding fuel efficiency. In terms of maintenance, the time between overhaul is increased as DEP engines are not always running at full load there is no physical contact with propeller and engine. These features mean the overall cost and maintenance is reduced for the vessel owner – putting more focus on the voyage ahead and less worry about the operation of the engines. ISSUE #027 – DECEMBER 2009. The DEP engines are also a clear choice for reducing the environmental footprint of the vessel. While Caterpillar Marine Power Systems continues to drive forward in engine emission reduction, electronic power generation presents a clear advantage over traditional diesel counterparts by drastically reducing the CO2 emissions as a result of efficiency gains from better power and load management. In addition, the emission levels achieved with DEP engines enable shipping companies to obtain special environmental certification with the Marine Classification Societies, such as DNV Clean Design, GL Green Passport, LR Character N or the German Government’s Blauer Engel. These environmental classes not only add to the vessel owner’s image but also reduce harbor fees in some parts of the world. Putting the engines to the test Since launching earlier this year, Cat dealers have received increasing interest in the diesel electric option because they can provide all necessary components to develop a turn-key solution, including transfer switches and switchboards. The Edison Chouest Offshore family of companies has already announced plans to design and build a series of deepwater diesel-electric offshore supply vessels. Cat engines will power the 300-ft, 5,300 DWT vessels with 4x 3512C DEP 1700 ekW engines powering two 2500kW variable speed electric motors and a range of thrusters motors. These vessels are scheduled for completion in 2010. ************************

INTERNATIONAL NEWS Rome Vows to Support Italy’s Yards - December 22nd 2009 The Italian government has committed to a significant programme of support for the country’s shipbuilding industry, pledging to push forward publicly funded contracts, provide export credits for the yards and lobby in Brussels for policies to assist the sector.

LNG Demand Spurs LNG Carrier Orders For China - December 17th 2009 China will increasingly chart plans to build more LNG carriers, according to a report by the official government publication, the China Daily. The country’s latest priorities come amid Beijing’s aggressive pursuits to lock in gas reserves, a commodity it vitally needs to service its large manufacturing-based economy. The demand surge also comes at a time when the winter power demand is draining much of the country’s existing LNG supplies. Latest statistics from China’s customs show that the nation imported 4.39 million tonnes of LNG in the first ten months of 2009. The report said China would need 39 LNG carriers by 2010 and more than 65 by 2015 to transport gas. It further added that Shanghai-based Hudong-Zhonghua would be the first Chinese company to build the vessels. “We have just finished the last vessel in the first lot of five orders that we received,” the report quoted Jiang Minda, Deputy Secretary General at Hudong-Zhonghua as saying. The yard’s expertise and success have purportedly spurred on other Chinese yards to diversify into LNG tanker building the news report added.

India to Build Two New Shipyards - December 9th 2009 The Indian Government has announced plans to build two new shipyards. The new facilities will be built on the East coast and West coast on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, the Rajya Rabha (Upper House) said last week. “Expressions of interest have been invited from experienced and interested shipyards / firms to participate in a global competition for setting up international size shipyards on BOT (build operate transfer) licenses on the East Coast and West Coast of India," Shipping Minister G K Vasan stated. India has 27 shipyards and holds less than one percent of the global shipbuilding market. Continued on Page 18

Carnival to Launch “Cougar Cruise” for Singles - December 8th 2009 Carnival’s cruise ship, ‘Elation’ will set sail on December 11th to host the world’s first international Cougar Cruise, in an event hosted by the world’s largest non-profit singles travel group. “A cougar is generally known as a woman over 40 who likes to date younger men,” the man who came up with the idea, Richard Gosse, told CNN. Three hundred guests have signed up for the three-night cruise which will sail from San Diego, California, to Ensenada, Mexico. “We usually have too many women and not enough guys but there’s been a paradigm shift in recent years, so now the cubs are more excited about it than the cougars,” he added. A “cub” is a man in his 20s or 30s who likes to date older women, he defined. Mr. Gosse has been hosting singles events for over 30 years.

IMO Awards Panama Canal CEO Maritime Prize - December 7th 2009 The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) awarded Panama Canal Authority (ACP) Administrator / CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta the 2008 International Maritime Prize. During a special ceremony held in London on December 3, 2009 Mr. Alemán Zubieta received the award from IMO Secretary-General Efthimios E Mitropoulos for ensuring smooth operations at the canal and overseeing the historic expansion of the waterway. The International Maritime Prize is presented annually to an individual or organisation judged to have made the most significant contribution to the work and objectives of the IMO. The IMO Council decided to award the prize to Mr. Zubieta, nominated by the Government of Panama, for his successful management of the canal and its expansion programme. The decision was announced during the IMO Council’s 102nd session held July 6, 2009. Under Mr. Zubieta’s leadership, the ACP successfully shifted its operations from a profitneutral utility to a market-oriented business model. Mr. Zubieta oversees the canal’s US$5.25 billion expansion programme, which will double the waterway’s capacity and allow more traffic and the transit of longer, wider ships. ************************

WÄRTSILÄ HAS UNIQUE INTEGRATOR ROLE IN FELLOWSHIP A Pioneering Fuel Cell Technology Project Wärtsilä has been assigned overall responsibility for systems integration in the pioneering FellowSHIP project. Wärtsilä’s specially designed equipment is being used to integrate and create synergies between leading marine technology and state-of-the-art fuel cell technology. The equipment has been installed onboard the platform supply vessel ‘Viking Lady’ for extensive sea tests. The innovative solution is seen as being an important contributor in the development of environmentally sustainable marine propulsion systems. The FellowSHIP project is a joint industry research and development project managed by Det Norske Veritas. It aims to develop and demonstrate hybrid fuel cell power packs, especially suited for marine and offshore use. The power pack will be used as an auxililiary power source on the ‘Viking Lady’, which is owned by Eidesvik Offshore, Norway. The ship has been designed by Wärtsilä Ship Design, and its main engines and power drives have also been supplied by Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä’s electrical & automation business unit in Norway has custom developed the power electronics needed to connect the fuel cell to the ship’s electrical network, and Wärtsilä has, therefore, the important role of being the systems integrator for the FellowSHIP project.

The Viking Lady is a state-of-the-art supply vessel, which operates on a combination of combustion engines and fuel cell - all operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

ISSUE #027 – DECEMBER 2009. Wärtsilä’s electro & automation business unit specializes in designing and developing technologies related to electrical distribution, controls and power converter applications. “For the FellowSHIP project, Wärtsilä has developed the power electronics, and the systems for regulating and distributing energy from the fuel cell to the electrical network. We have also delivered the distribution and control systems,” says Ingve Sørfonn, Project Manager and Director R&D, Wärtsilä Ship Power Technology. In May, the 320 kW fuel cell, produced by MTU Onsite Energy GmbH, a member of the German Tognum Group, arrived at Stord in Norway. Here it has been integrated together with Wärtsilä’s technology, and tested. During this land testing all operational modes, shut down conditions, and dynamical behaviour have been tested and verified in accordance with the specifications. The fuel cell technology is designed to increase efficiency and leads to a considerable reduction in emissions. Fuel cell technology of this power size has never before been installed in merchant vessels, and the highly innovative project is unique on a world scale. Wärtsilä has been involved in fuel cell technology since the mid-1990s and specializes in systems integration. “Developing better and more environmentally friendly technologies for the marine industry and offshore market is a very important focus area for Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä invests heavily in research and development aimed at reducing emissions and improving fuel-efficiency. Being the systems integrator on what might potentially be the world’s most environmentally friendly ship, is very exciting for us,” says Sørfonn. “The vision for the FellowSHIP project is to develop a technology that makes a positive contribution to the environment, and which can be used in marine constructions. We have great expectations for the tests that will now be carried out at sea.” The partners in the FellowSHIP project include Wärtsilä, Eidesvik, Det Norske Veritas and MTU Onsite Energy GmbH. The project is supported by the Norwegian Research Council, Innovation Norway, and the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. **********************

WORLD MAYORS IN COPENHAGEN BOARD SUSTAINABLE SHIP When mayors from all over the world convene to study how environmental technology can improve life in big cities, they will do so aboard the first large-scale ship ever with a fuel cell installed. At a special event during the Copenhagen Climate Summit for Mayors, which runs parallel to COP15, mayors from cities like Tokyo, Bristol and Rio de Janeiro will board the supply ship Viking Lady for a cruise around the Copenhagen Harbour and into Oresund. During the event, Copenhagen's Lord Mayor Ritt Bjerregaard will show her international guests how wind turbine co-ops, waste management and incineration plants have helped improve air quality and reduce Copenhagen's CO2 footprint. The event will also illustrate how cities that host harbours have a potential to hold shipping to stricter emissions standards. The fuel cell is the first ever on board a large-scale commercial ship. The fuel cell uses fuels more efficiently and helps curb harmful emissions and noise during the ship's frequent stops in busy harbours. "The Viking Lady is living proof that the technology required for more environmentally sustainable sea transport is already available, if we are willing to put it to use. While emissions from international sea transport may be a matter of global regulation, shipping is also a matter of local concern, especially with regards to air quality around large coastal cities worldwide. By operating on clean energy while at dock, the Viking Lady contributes towards cleaner air and improved public health, and also helps curb emissions that cause global warming," said Per Wiggo Richardsen from FellowSHIP, the consortium behind the Viking Lady. The shipping industry transports more than 85% of all global trade and is responsible for 3% of total global CO2 emissions. The technology on board the Viking Lady cuts CO2 emissions considerably and reduces harmful NOx emissions equal to the emissions from 22,000 cars annually. "Emissions of CO2 and NOx pollution from cargo ships are a great challenge to the world's cities - especially those on the coast line. This boat trip is a great opportunity for mayors of the world to investigate the potential of next-generation vessels - and at the same time learn more about Danish energy policy and how Copenhagen has integrated climate technology, such as the offshore wind farm Middelgrunden, into the city's efforts to improve air quality and lessen the city's CO2 footprint. It will be quite a unique experience," said Ritt Bjerregaard, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen. The Viking Lady will dock at KvĂŚsthusmolen pier in Copenhagen on 16th and 17th December 2009. After the Lord Mayor and her guests have disembarked on the second day of the ship's visit, the Viking Lady will return to active duty in the North Sea. ********************** Page 21 of 25
