Awards Committee Report Spring Meeting – 13 April 2019 The Awards Committee met on 4 March 2019 to select the recipients of the Admiral Louis E. Denfeld Memorial Award and H. McCoy Jones Award from the candidates submitted by the Commandant of Midshipmen. The recipients of the Collins/Roos Class of 1949 JV MVP and E.E. “Rip” Miller football awards are chosen by their teammates. The recipients of the Joe Bellino, Roger Staubach, Napoleon McCallum and David Robinson awards are selected by their respective coaches as are the Travis Manion and Erik Kristensen Awards. The Cheryl Dolyniuk Carlan award is proposed by NAAA and the Commandant of Midshipmen, but selected by our Awards Committee. Actual presentations of these awards will be made at the USNA Foundation Trustees’ Spring Dinner banquet on 12 April 2019. Those not selected will be presented in the USNA Commandant’ s office in May.

The Admiral Louis E. Denfeld Memorial Award recognizes that Foundation sponsored member of the graduating class who has best displayed traits of leadership, demonstrated academic proficiency and has participated extensively in extra curricular activities. The recipient of this award is Midshipman 1/C Robert Leyba from Katy, TX. The recipient of the E.E. “Rip” Miller Award is selected by members of the varsity football team and is presented to that member of the squad “who has contributed the most to the team.” This year’s recipient is Midshipman 2/C Malcolm Perry from Clarkesville, TN. The Joe Bellino Trophy is presented annually to the varsity football player whose inspiring on-thefield performance made a significant impact on the team and contributed to its overall success during the season. This year’s recipient is Midshipman 1/C Taylor Heflin from Jesup, GA. The Roger Staubach Trophy is presented annually to the varsity football player who demonstrated outstanding and consistent leadership and “Expect to Win” attitude in contributing to the team’s success during the season. This player embodied honor, courage and commitment on and off the playing field. This year’s recipient is Midshipman 2/C Ford Higgins from Norcross, GA. The David Robinson Trophy is presented annually to the varsity basketball player of the graduating class who has contributed the most to the team’s success over his playing career. This year’s recipient is Midshipman 1/C Hasan S. Abdullah from Birmingham, AL. The 1st LT Travis L. Manion Wrestling Trophy is presented annually in memory of 1stLT Travis Manion, ’04 killed in action in IRAQ. It is presented to the Navy Wrestler from the graduating class who displayed outstanding leadership and work habits throughout his career at the Naval Academy. The recipient is Midshipman 1/C Nicholas Gil.

To be presented in Commandant’s office during graduation week (May, 2019) The H. McCoy Jones Award recognizes that Foundation sponsored member of the graduating class who has demonstrated the highest degree of excellence in the Naval Academy athletic program and in leadership and competitive spirit. The recipient of this award is 1/C Midshipman Marie Valenti from Bechtelsville, PA. The Napoleon McCallum Trophy is presented annually to the varsity football player of the graduating class who has gained the most all-purpose yards in his varsity playing career. This year’s recipient is Midshipman 1/C Zach Abey from Pasadena, MD.

The Cheryl Dolyniuk Carlan Trophy is presented annually to that female midshipman of the graduating class who has excelled in athletics, leadership and academics. Recommendations are received from NAAA and Commandant of Midshipman. Selection is made by the Awards Committee. A recipient is not selected at this time. The LCDR Erik Kristensen Crew Trophy is presented annually in memory of LCDR Erik Kristensen ’95, killed in action in Afghanistan. It is for the varsity heavyweight crew member of the graduating class who has contributed the most to the program’s success over his career at the Naval Academy. A recipient is not been selected at this time. The BOXING “CHAMPIONS TROPHY” honors Navy Boxing Coaches, Spike Webb, Tony Rubino, Emerson Smith and Jim McNally. It is awarded to midshipmen who have won a collegiate national championship. This trophy, created by Trustee, Chuck Spadafora, will be presented each year to Club Boxing National Champions. If there is a National Champion, they will be recognized in the Commandant’s office May. The Max Bishop /Joe Duff Trophy is presented annually to that Navy varsity baseball player of the graduating class who has contributed the most to the team’s success over his varsity playing career. The recipient is selected by the coaching staff. The recipient will be selected at the completion of the baseball season in May.
