ABOUT US

Founded in 1944, the Naval Academy Athletic and Scholarship Programs (A&SP), a division of the United States Naval Academy Foundation, encourages and supports athletic excellence at the Naval Academy. The program is responsible for grants and awards that recognize superiority in athletics and a comprehensive scholarship program to ensure that the Naval Academy has the best scholar-athletes in the nation.

MISSION

To provide leadership, need based funding, guidance and mentoring to all Foundation Preparatory School students, to provide needed private funding to all USNA varsity, club and intramural sports teams through The Fund for Athletic Excellence and to remain a highly respected organization in support of the Physical Mission of the U.S. Naval Academy.

ATHLETIC SUPPORT

Each year, the Foundation (A&SP) provides more than $3.6 million in direct support for all types of athletic activities at the Naval Academy. This includes extensive financial support to not only the 36 varsity teams, but also the many club and intramural teams as well as to the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Through a need-based scholarship program, the Foundation (A&SP), provides one year of post-high school education to qualified young men and women who need further academic preparation before they enter the Naval Academy. Thanks to the Foundation’s (A&SP) sponsorship, more than 4,000 motivated candidates with excellent leadership, scholastic and athletic potential have graduated from the Naval Academy since 1944. It is a “win-win” for the Naval Academy and for these outstanding candidates!

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

That’s a wrap on 2024. With holidays fast approaching and our 80th Anniversary in our rearview mirror, the significance of our accomplishments this past year is motivating. The impact the Naval Academy Alumni Association & Foundation (AA&F) and our trustees have had on the Naval Academy and the Physical Mission cannot be overstated. There’s a sense of positivity and purpose as we guide the Athletic & Scholarship Programs (A&SP) into 2025 and beyond. We are all instrumental in shaping the future leaders of our nation. And the future is bright.

This year was impactful and transformational in Annapolis. Vice Admiral Yvette Davids ’89, USN, became the first female Superintendent in the history of the institution. Captain Walt Allman ’97, USN, became the new Commandant of Midshipmen, becoming the first Navy SEAL officer to ever hold the post. And the academic year began with the Brigade shifting from 30 companies back to 36 in Bancroft Hall.

Lastly, important construction projects progressed across the Yard as part of the Naval Academy’s resiliency efforts to combat sea level rise. These projects will provide further restoration to Farragut Sea Wall, Bancroft Hall and other vital infrastructure.

This past year also marked a new era at AA&F with the arrival of the Fluegel Alumni Center (FAC). Since its ribbon-cutting in September 2023, the FAC has become a vibrant hub of activity, hosting hundreds of events.

The FAC has truly transformed our ability to accomplish our enterprise mission and purpose—To connect and support our alumni and the U.S. Naval Academy community so that the Brigade and alumni lead and serve at their full potential for the good of the nation. And we can never forget that the FAC was financed and built purely through the giving of our alumni. Alumni like our A&SP Trustees!

It is because of your passion, dedication and philanthropy that the Academy is the nation’s premier leadership development institution. On the athletic fields the power of our philanthropy provides the MARGIN OF EXCELLENCE, a phrase Chet Gladchuk coined and continues to use to describe the critical pieces that augment Big Navy’s funding of the moral, mental and physical missions of USNA. From nutrition centers around the athletic facilities, weight room improvements and continued support of our Foundation schools, we are critical to the overall success of the nation’s #1 ranked public school (as announced just last month by U.S. News and World Report).

The impact of our philanthropy and these support projects for NAAA is validated by the results on the field. We culminated

a “Decade of Dominance,” earning our 10th consecutive Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, another Army-Navy Star Series, 14 Conference Championships. In addition, over the last 10 years, Navy has won 84 Patriot League Championships. In the classroom, our athletes and Foundation students continue to excel, as well. 2023 was the 9th straight year that a Navy student-athlete earned the honor of being the USNA Valedictorian. Further, USNA varsity athletes boast an amazing graduation rate of 94 percent.

We have the following new Trustees to announce from the Membership Committee:

Lastly, as we celebrate 80 years of the A&SP, recall our two core missions: 1) to create opportunities for talented students to receive an additional year of preparation for USNA at one of our now-16 affiliated prep schools through need-based scholarships,

ADM Bill Moran ’81, USN (Ret.)

and 2) provide financial support in support of the USNA’s physical mission by raising funds for the Fund for Athletic Excellence which provides versatile operating dollars for our varsity, club and intramural sports.

Lastly, the 80th Anniversary dinner on 15 November at the Westin was an incredible success. The event was marked by the attendance and remarks from Vice Admiral Jim Malloy ’86, USN (Ret.), himself an A&SP Foundation scholar, Captain Chris “Chowdah” Hill, commanding officer of Dwight D. EisEnhowEr (CVN 69) and Vice Admiral Yvette Davids ’89, USN, the 64th Superintendent of the Naval Academy.

Thank you to all who attended and continue to support the Physical Mission of the U.S. Naval Academy. Beat Army!

Admiral Bill Moran ’81, USN (Ret.) Chairman, Athletic and Scholarship Programs

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

On my desk is a copy of “A Message to Garcia” by Elbert Hubbard. Many of you will know what I am referring to, and yet, some will have no idea. An inspirational essay written in a single hour on 22 February 1899, the story celebrates the virtues of hard work, initiative and dedication in the face of adversity. It is a story of a soldier delivering a crucial message with unparalleled determination. Why do I mention this? Simply, because I am reminded every day of the virtues it espouses and makes me want to be better and to do my level best to help our young scholars be the best they can be. “Character is the result of two things, mental attitude and the way we spend our time. It is what we think and what we do that makes us what we are.”

I often feel like a broken record when I talk about our programs and all our collective successes, but the simple fact is we continue to improve. That is the result of a complex ecosystem of amazing people all working together to achieve phenomenal results! No one is resting on their laurels, and we are always looking for ways to improve! Our support of our A&SP Foundation scholars and the financial support we provide to the USNA physical mission is undeniable and we make a difference each and every day in the lives of the students at our affiliated prep schools, NAPS and the Naval Academy!

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

The caliber of the young men and women afforded the opportunity to take part in our Athletic and Scholarship Programs is a source of immense pride for me. These young people have faced disappointment in not receiving a direct appointment to USNA. We have incredibly talented students applying to the Naval Academy—a testament to the character of our Foundation scholars, who have chosen their path with resilience and will power. Each of them has chosen the road less traveled and this path is particularly challenging. However, their positive attitudes, determination and desire to serve our country are the catalysts for success. This prep year prepares our students for the academic rigors of plebe year. It also allows them a year to mature and grow … morally, mentally and physically. The result is a well prepared, confident and capable midshipman!

The Foundation sponsored prep class for the USNA Class of 2028 began their Naval Academy journey in the late summer/ early fall of 2023. Forty-two (27 men and 15 women) motivated students descended upon 12 of our 16 affiliated prep schools, hailing from 17 different states, including a student from Germany. California had eight students, Virginia had five and Pennsylvania and Florida had four. Forty earned their appointments, but two chose not to accept their appointment offer. One student chose to disenroll and sadly, Brody Hall, was killed in an automobile accident. That gave us a 90 percent success rate. Per our tradition, we welcomed these 38 students to Annapolis the day before Induction Day with an Ice Cream

CAPT Don Hughes ’88, USN (Ret.)

Social. It was the first time we hosted this event in our new home at the Fluegel Alumni Center. Our Superintendent, Vice Admiral Yvette Davids ’89, USN, A&SP Chairman Admiral Bill Moran ’81, USN (Ret.), and USNA AA&F President and CEO Jeff Webb ’95 welcomed our students and their families, thanked them for their commitment to this next step in their journeys and wished them well!

The Class of 2029 Foundation A&SP prep students are in place at 12 of our 16 affiliated prep schools. Forty-five (30 men and 15 women) students enrolled for the 2024-2025 academic year. These young scholars hail from 21 states and Puerto Rico and are working extremely hard to earn their appointments! I have the great privilege of being their Blue and Gold officer traveling to each of the schools we have students attending to conduct interviews and checking up on them to see how they are doing. They are doing great and are challenging themselves to be the best they can be!

PHYSICAL MISSION SUPPORT

I have been in this wonderful job for more than five years now and our A&SP trustees, fellow alumni, parents and friends all contribute to the amazing financial support we provide to the Naval Academy’s physical mission through contributions to the Fund for Athletic Excellence. The Naval Academy strives to develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and their prep year helps to prepare them for the journey they will embark upon, and ultimately their service to our country.

I mentioned the ongoing financial support and this past year represented another record year for donations. For the first time, the Fund for Athletic Excellence broke the $5M barrier. With the changing landscape in college athletics, our teams will continue to require the kind of support our Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk refers to as the X factor! We provide needed funding for the Naval Academy’s physical mission, to include varsity, club and intramural sports. This “margin of excellence” funding helps our teams compete at the highest levels possible and the results speak for themselves!

Last year, Navy went 19-17-1 against Army overall, and 14-11-1 in the Army-Navy Star series to win (AGAIN!). Navy has won the overall series against Army 48 times in the last 52 years and the midshipmen also won the Star Series with an amazing 40-4-2 record the last 46 years.

Navy claimed its 10th consecutive Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, winning a league best nine conference championships during the 2023-24 academic year. Navy’s ten consecutive overall titles is the most in Patriot League Presidents’ Cup history. We had 14 conference athletes of the year, six scholarathletes of the year and the highest number of scholar-athletes  within the Patriot League. Navy had 23 All-Americans, five CSC Academic All-Americans and 13 Coach of the Year awards Gladchuk said, “A decade of dominance in the Patriot League is a bar set by amazing individuals who wear the Blue and Gold with a time tested ‘Expect to Win’ mindset. Competitive success is ingrained in the educational model we believe

directly correlates with the development of leaders who we expect to be role models in the fleet and beyond.”

Every year during our semi-annual spring and fall A&SP meetings, our awards committee selects the Coach of the Year for the fall, winter and spring seasons. As always, the competition is keen and there are many of our outstanding coaches deserving of being selected for this honor. This past year we selected:

Winter:  John Morrison, women’s swimming and diving Fall:  Aaron Lanzel, men’s cross country

Spring: Gavin Hickie, rugby

Congratulations to these amazing leaders of our midshipmen!

BRAVO ZULU AND THANK YOU!

I have always enjoyed reading and learning from others. Somewhere I read owning up to mistakes and recognizing others’ contributions builds respect and trust. I am blessed to have a wonderful team, and they help keep me centered and on track. I make plenty of mistakes, but I try to learn from each one. I’m fond of saying, “we all have crosses to bear” and it is comforting to know there are many who are willing to share the load. Tracey Cook and Mariola Baker do the heavy lifting for our team … I along with our trustees and scholars are the benefactors of all they do to keep our A&SP Team humming along. I respect and trust them immensely.

Of course, A&SP is not an island … as mentioned previously, we are part of a complex ecosystem, and we thrive with teamwork and a common purpose. Our communications team is simply amazing, and we could not do what we do without their determined efforts. In addition, our teammates at the Naval Academy Athletic Association do an incredible job stewarding all our athletic excellence donors. Thank you to Tim Ford, Kala Giddish, Maeve Hall and Harrison Dover for all you do! The Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation senior leadership team are pure professionals and keep our ship on course. With that nautical reference … it is our President and CEO, Jeff Webb, and our A&SP Chair Bill Moran who provide the strategic direction and support what A&SP does with grace, humility and competence.

We are so immensely proud of our unique organization and are happy to answer any questions you may have on what we do and how you can support our efforts.

In closing, I implore you all to be impactful, be a giver more so than a taker and make a difference! Choose to be happy, be genuine, and be a friend to all … a friend you would like to have! And of course … GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!

PREP SCHOOL IN THE SPOTLIGHT

NORTHWESTERN PREPARATORY SCHOOL

In the midst of a National Forest, a mile high above sea level with a view extending 100 miles to the ocean, academy candidates gather to commit to their pursuit of entering a U.S. service academy with the goal of being a military officer. These students believe in the honor code, are accomplished athletes and excellent scholars. Quickly after arrival, they recognize the high standards that they value are shared by their new classmates. They become a team striving to reach similar goals.Two-thirds of the students in attendance are part of the Foundation programs of the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Military Academy at West Point. The free agents who complete the class are applying to one or more of the academies.

Northwestern Preparatory School was established in Minnesota in 1914. Since its affiliation with the Naval Academy Foundation in 1961, 635 USNA Foundation scholars have attended NWPrep. In the years since 1982, more than 3,000 of our students have been appointed to the five U.S. service academies. Regarding the last 15 USNA graduating classes, 96% of our Navy Foundation students have been appointed, with 91% of those graduating from USNA. In the disciplined environment of Northwestern Prep, the days are intense and purposeful. Beginning with dormitory inspection before breakfast and ending with curfew at 2240, the daily schedule is focused on mathematics, chemistry, English grammar, physics, vocabulary studies, contemporary world affairs and physical training. Classes are in session six and a half days per week and were developed in collaboration with the academies. Seminars, along with the Distinguished Visitor Series, educate students on academy life, military careers, the honor code and leadership. During the fall semester, students have total classroom instruction hours equivalent to two semesters of college attendance. After completing the fall program, they attend the second semester at a college, taking courses required by the academies. This two-step program offers the intensity and direction of the

first semester and the chance to exercise independence and self-reliance the second semester, while having a civilian college experience. Before entering the academies, they gain maturity, resiliency, education, enhanced study skills, increased fitness, knowledge of military careers, confidence and resolve.

Former students have been awarded Marshall, Fulbright and Fitzgerald Scholarships. They have been selected for graduate studies at universities like Oxford University in England, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, the Naval Postgraduate School, medical schools and law schools. Graduates include admirals, generals, pilots of every aircraft, SEALS, green berets, combat controllers, submariners, JAG officers, SWOs, instructors at the academies and much more. Many serve as military officers until retirement. Others, after their commitment, have become leaders in industries including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, aerospace development, education, law and medicine. Having formed strong bonds on this mountaintop, NWPrep alumnae support each other at their respective academies and onto their careers across the globe.

IT’S BEEN SAID THAT GOD TAKES THE GOOD ONES. WELL, HE TOOK ONE OF THE BEST ONES.

Brody Austin Hall (18), an aviation and LEGO fanatic, passed away on 23 March 2024 in Selma, AL.  He was born on 9 June 2005 in Nacogdoches, TX, and saved in the waters of Okinawa, Japan, on 5 April 2015.

He is survived by his “Mah” and “Dad” Ashlee and Jeremy Hall of the USAF (current stationed in Ramstein AB, Germany); his sister “Keely” Hall of Austin, TX; his “Nana” and “Papa” Susan and Bobby Walker of Tuscola, TX; his “Missy” and “Pawpaw” Melissa and Barney Hall of Woodville, TX; his uncle and aunt Clay and Nikki Walker of North Richland Hills, TX, and their gang Colin, Tyler, Emily and Logan;  his aunt and uncle Autumn and Joey Mayer of Woodville, TX, and their bunch Will, Juliana and Brooklyn; and a whole litany of folks whom he loved and who loved him.

He was a natural at things like learning, bringing joy to others and not cleaning his room. He had a big, beautiful smile that brought comfort to all who met him. When writing school papers and essays, whatever could be written succinctly in 50 words, Brody would attempt to sum up in eight.

Brody entered into school early. He was smart and charming, which resulted in him being the teacher’s pet and rather than completing assignments, he was tasked with helping teach lessons to other students. In his nearly 19 years, he never grew out of being smart and charming.

His sister, Keely, inspired him, among other things, to learn ukulele and piano. He taught himself and played piano at every opportunity as a way to ground himself.

His love of aviation started early and when he turned 10, he decided to fly F-18s in the U.S. Navy. From that moment forward, his life was dedicated to learning all things aviation. This decision lead him to get hired at a flight museum at which he got to teach and fly on numerous historic WWII aircrafts.

There was never a stranger around Brody. He could just as easily talk to someone as he could make them smile and feel heard. He was a born nurturer and had a servant heart.  If someone needed help or just a shoulder, he was there.

He loved his family. He loved people. He loved God.

Brody worked hard. He played and lettered in football, baseball and cheer. He excelled at school which resulted in him earning a slot as a recipient of the United States Naval Academy Foundation Scholarship Program, allowing him to attend a year of prep school prior to USNA.

After graduating Ramstein High School in Germany, while attending Marion Military Institute, he took up playing trombone in the school band while never having played brass or participated in band before.

Then, to the complete and utter disbelief of all, with two months remaining until graduation, Brody lost his life as a passenger in a single vehicle accident.

He is interred at DFW National Cemetery in Arlington, TX.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to “Moody Aviation” at 6719 E Rutter Avenue, Spokane, WA 99212. Checks are preferred (in the memo section, please state “In Memory of Brody Hall for the Moody Aviation Grant Fund”).

Cash and credit card payments via phone are accepted, also.   He will be greatly, wholly and painfully missed.
