FROM THE CHAIRMAN Since our inception in 1944, the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs have provided tuition assistance for deserving students to enter the Naval Academy via our preparatory school program. This program has sponsored more than 4,000 graduates from the Naval Academy over the years and we have some 200 Foundation alumni within the current Brigade of Midshipmen. Equally important, and in consonance with the mission to enhance athletic excellence at the Academy, we provide critical financial support to all physical mission areas: club, intramural and varsity athletic programs.We also support athletic programs at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, RI. Examples of this support are listed on page 7 of this newsletter. Athletic and Scholarship Programs, which includes Trustees, Emeriti, friends and Foundation parents, was an integral part of the previous $254 million comprehensive campaign to support the U.S. Naval Academy. In fact, this small group contributed more than $41 million toward the campaign goal, continuing our longstanding tradition of relevance and responsiveness to the Naval Academy. To preserve this legacy of support, we established the “Fund for Athletic Excellence,” which is now our primary fundraising focus and the lifeblood of the organization. We ask all Trustees to support this important program. Most classes include athletic excellence as part of their ongoing class fundraising projects and many Trustees now include it in their estate plans. It’s a group effort!
The renaissance of Navy athletics continues unabated. If you have visited Annapolis recently, you have witnessed an extraordinary transformation of the NavyMarine Corps Memorial Stadium. More importantly, it is a fitting memorial to the sacrifice made by our Navy and Marine Corps personnel who have participated in each of our nation’s wars and continue today in the global war on terror. The new Akerson Tower on the east side of the stadium, several open club areas, new suites, recruiting areas, new scoreboard and television facilities have all been added since last season. Ricketts Hall, the athletic department headquarters, is also commencing a major renovation and expansion. These projects not only enhance the world-class athletic facilities, they make a statement: We are committed to excellence! All being done with private funding—our midshipmen deserve nothing less. Again, our Foundation’s purpose is to remain relevant and responsive to the needs of the Naval Academy. We do this most vividly by increasing our financial support. We have new recognition levels (President’s Circle: $2,500/year; Fleet Club: $5,000/year; Rip Miller: $10,000/year and Friends of Navy Athletics: $25,000/year for five years) for those Trustees, parents and friends who wish to support athletic excellence. Additionally, our Trustees have stepped up and are involved in a wide range of volunteer projects to assist Navy athletic programs and to educate midshipman athletes about the rich heritage and tradition of which they are now an integral part. Like any organization, we are only as good as our people. ABOUT US: Founded in 1944, the Naval Academy Athletic and Scholarship Program, a division of the United States Naval Academy Foundation, encourages and supports athletic excellence at the Naval Academy. The program is responsible for grants and awards that recognize superiority in athletics and a comprehensive scholarship program to ensure that the Naval Academy has the best scholar-athletes in the nation. MISSION: To promote athletic excellence at the Naval Academy through a comprehensive preparatory school scholarship program and through privately funded grants to athletic and physical development programs for which government funds are not appropriate or not available. ATHLETIC SUPPORT: Each year, the Foundation provides more than $1.5 million in direct support for all types of athletic activities at the Naval Academy. This includes extensive financial support to not only the 33 varsity teams, but also the many club and intramural teams as well as to the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI. SCHOLARSHIPS: Through a need-based scholarship program, the Foundation provides one year of post-high school education to qualified young men and women who need further academic preparation before they enter the Naval Academy. Thanks to the Foundation's sponsorship, more than 4,000 motivated candidates with excellent leadership, scholastic and athletic potential have graduated from the Naval Academy since 1944. It is a “win-win” for the Naval Academy and for these outstanding candidates!

Admiral Louis E. Denfeld Memorial Award The Admiral Louis E. Denfeld Memorial Award recognizes that Foundation-sponsored member of the graduating class who has best displayed traits of leadership, demonstrated academic proficiency and participated extensively in extracurricular activities. This award honors Admiral Denfeld, a 1912 graduate of USNA, Trustee VADM Joe Leidig ‘78, USN (Ret.), with MIDN Evan Nicholl ‘15 destroyerman in WWI, submariner in the 1920s and 1930s and Chief of Naval Operations in 1947. After retirement, he became the first chairman of the Foundation Trustees’ Executive Committee. This year’s recipient of the Denfeld Award was Midshipman Evan Nicholl ‘15 from Acworth, GA. Evan attended Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL, under Foundation sponsorship. She majored in international relations and her service selection was Supply Corps.

H. McCoy Jones Award The H. McCoy Jones Award recognizes that Foundationsponsored member of the graduating class who has demonstrated the highest degree of excellence in the Naval Academy athletic program and in leadership and competitive spirit. This award honors “Piggy” Jones, one of the founders of the Naval Academy Foundation, who personally ran the Trustee Howie Winfree ‘61 with MIDN Keefe preparatory school program Rafferty ‘15 during the 1940s and 1950s. This year’s recipient of the Jones Award was Midshipman Keefe Rafferty ‘15 from Watertown, CT. Keefe attended The Kent School in Kent, CT, as a Foundation-sponsored student. He majored in oceanography and his service selection was Surface Warfare Officer oceanography option.
F R O M T H E E X E C U T I V E D I R E C TO R This has been another outstanding year for our Athletic and Scholarship Programs. I’ve really enjoyed and am pr ivileged to work with so many wonderful families and candidates, our own Alumni Association and Foundation and the staffs of the Naval Academy admissions and athletic departments. We held our spring and fall meetings and each was attended by many of our 250 active Trustees and their spouses.The focus at both events was staying relevant to the Naval Academy and promoting the “Fund for Athletic Excellence” and the prep school program. While we are doing very well overall, we still need your help in our mission to support both important programs. The information that follows gives you an idea of the wonderful impact we’ve had over the past year.
Athletic Support An important part of our mission is, of course, the Foundation’s monetary support to the Naval Academy and its physical mission for varsity, club and intramural sports programs. Much of the renovation work at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium was funded by our organization. We are also committed to keeping the current football coaching staff intact.With Ken Niumatalolo as Navy’s head football coach and an aggressive but realistic schedule this year as we join the American Athletic Conference, we have a great opportunity to extend our current run of successful seasons and regain the Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy. That coaching staff stability is critical to the success of the program, and we have been a part of that. During the past year, we provided almost $2 million in support for recruiting, team and coaches’ travel, trophies, team equipment, radio broadcasting, athletic facilities and annual
coaches/Midshipmen athletic awards.We are committed to providing more than $2 million during this upcoming year. In just the last several years, our unique organization has contributed more than $50 million in support to the Naval Academy, the preparatory school program and Navy athletics. We could not accomplish this without the generous contributions each year from our Trustees, parents and friends of the Naval Academy. Thanks again for your sincere commitment to this unique foundation! Scholarship Program We completed another successful admissions cycle for the entering Class of 2019 at USNA on 1 July. Of the 55 original Foundationsponsored prep school students, 53 (31 men and 22 women) earned their appointments and became midshipmen on Induction Day. One candidate had been delayed for a year due to medical problems, but she checked in this summer after successful rehab during prep

E.E. “Rip” Miller Varsity Football Award The E.E. “Rip” Miller Varsity Football Trophy is presented annually by the Naval Academy Foundation to that member of the varsity football squad who is voted by his teammates as having contributed the most to the team. This award is a lasting tribute to Rip Miller, who played a major role in the development of Navy Athletic and Scholarship Programs Chairman RADM Tom Lynch ‘64, USN (Ret.), with MIDN football as coach and Keenan Reynolds ‘16 assistant director of athletics for 48 years, from 1926 to 1974. This year’s recipient of the Rip Miller Award was Midshipman Keenan Reynolds ‘16 from Antioch, TN. Keenan is majoring in international relations. This is the third year Keenan has received this honor.
Roger Staubach Trophy The Roger Staubach Trophy honors Roger Staubach ’65. Staubach was recipient of the Heisman, Maxwell and Walter Camp trophies, the Naval Academy Athletic Association sword and three-time winner of the Thompson Trophy. He was also a First Team AllAmerican at quarterback, a member of the National Football Foundation and Trustee Skip Orr ‘65 with MIDN Paul Quessenberry ‘15 College Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame and MVP of Super Bowl VI. Presented by the Trustees of the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs, the Roger Staubach Trophy is presented to the Navy varsity football player of the graduating class who has contributed the most to the team’s success over his varsity playing career. This year’s recipient was Midshipman Paul Quessenberry ‘15 from Carlsbad, CA. Paul majored in general science. His service selection was Marine Corps Ground.

for an outstanding 96.4 percent matriculation rate! As Plebe Summer drew to a close, we lost one of our Foundation candidates to a medical disqualification and we had one other
voluntarily drop out. On average, more than 90 percent of our candidates graduate from USNA once they have checked in here. New prep school scholarships created are: • The Anna and Paul M. Joe Bellino Trophy The Joe Bellino Trophy honors Joe Bellino ’61. Bellino led the Navy team over three years and to an Orange Bowl berth in 1961. Playing both ways, Bellino scored 31 touchdowns, amassed 1,664 yards rushing and set 15 Naval Academy records. He was the 1960 Heisman Trophy winner, as well as a unanimous First Team All-American, the Maxwell Trustee LCDR Robert Goodson ‘93, USN (Ret.), Award winner, the recipient with MIDN Parrish Gaines ‘15 of both the Thompson Trophy and the Naval Academy Athletic Association Sword in 1961 and a 1977 inductee to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The Joe Bellino Trophy is presented to the Navy varsity football player whose inspiring on-the-field performance made a significant impact on the team and contributed to its overall success during the season. The trophy is presented by the Trustees of the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs. This year’s recipient was Midshipman Parrish Gaines ‘15 from Smyrna, TN. Parrish majored in political science and his service selection was Supply Corps. 4
Napoleon McCallum Trophy The Napoleon McCallum Trophy honors Napoleon McCallum ’85, a concensus First Team All-American at halfback in 1983 and 1985. McCallum ranks second in NCAA Division I history for all-purpose yards with 7,172 and once held 26 Naval Academy records. After completing his active duty obligation, he played for the Trustee CDR Dave Lillefloren ‘92, USN (Ret.), Oakland Raiders until a knee with MIDN Noah Copeland ‘15 injury forced his retirement. He is a 2003 inductee of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Presented by the Trustees of the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs, the Napoleon McCallum Trophy is presented to the Navy varsity football player of the graduating class who has gained the most all-purpose yards in his varsity playing career. This year’s recipient was Midshipman Noah Copeland ‘15 from San Antonio, TX. Noah majored in general science and his service selection was Supply Corps.

Byron Marchant ’78, were all there along with many of our Trustees and their spouses. Next year’s Foundation prep class (USNA 2020) is already formed, with 46 prep students enrolled at 16 affiliated prep schools for the 2015-16 academic year.Their credentials are just as impressive as their predecessors. Historically, 95 percent of our sponsorees become midshipmen each year. Of that number, more than 90 percent will graduate from the Academy in four years with a Bachelor of Science degree, the highest of any accession source. David Robinson Trophy The David Robinson Trophy honors David Robinson ’87. Recipient of the John Wooden, Adolph Rupp and James Naismith awards and twice winner of the Thompson Trophy, Robinson was a First Team AllAmerican and three-time Olympian. Known as “The Admiral,” Robinson was College Player of the Year in 1987, National Basketball Athletic and Scholarship Programs Executive Director CAPT Ed Wallace ‘72, USN (Ret.), with Association MVP in 1995 MIDN Worth Smith ‘15 and a 10-time professional All-Star. Presented by the Trustees of the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs, the David Robinson Trophy honors the Navy varsity basketball player of the graduating class who has contributed the most to the team’s success over his varsity playing career. This year’s recipient was Midshipman Worth Smith ‘15 from Mooresville, NC. He majored in economics and his service selection was Surface Warfare.
Cheryl Dolyniuk Trophy The Cheryl Dolyniuk Trophy honors Cheryl Dolyniuk Carlan ’83. Carlan was the winner of 12 varsity letters in swimming, crew and volleyball. A recipient of the Thompson Trophy and the Admiral Lawrence Sword, Carlan was also inducted into the Navy Hall of Fame for swimming. She achieved the position of regimental commander and was captain Trustee the Honorable Maureen Cragin ‘85 with MIDN Loren Generi ‘15 of the swim team and the volleyball team. Carlan majored in systems engineering with a QPR of 3.5 and was also selected as an academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Presented by the Trustees of the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs, the Cheryl Dolyniuk Trophy is presented to that female midshipman of the graduating class who has excelled in athletics, leadership and academics during her four years at the Academy. This year’s recipient of the Dolyniuk Trophy is Midshipman Loren Generi ‘15 from Bayport, NY. She majored in operations research and her service selection was Surface Warfare. 5

Joe Duff/Max Bishop Baseball Trophy The Joe Duff/Max Bishop Baseball Trophy honors Navy coaches Joe Duff and Max Bishop. Bishop guided Navy to 314 wins during his 25 years as head coach from 1937 to 1961. Duff served as the head coach from 1962 to 1993 and won a schoolrecord 595 games. Their players remember the discipline they taught them Trustee Skip Orr ’65 with MIDN Stephen on the athletic field and the Moore ‘15 ideals they instilled in them as they headed off to their military careers. Duff and Bishop were coaches, they were teachers and they prepared the players for their careers in military service and in life. Presented by the Trustees of the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs, the Joe Duff/Max Bishop Trophy is presented to the Navy varsity baseball player of the graduating class who has contributed the most to the team’s success over his varsity playing career. This year’s recipient of the Joe Duff/Max Bishop Trophy is Midshipman Stephen Moore ‘15 from Marietta, GA. He majored in international relations and his service selection was Naval Flight Officer. 6
Lieutenant Commander Erik Kristensen Crew Trophy The Lieutenant Commander Erik Kristensen Crew Trophy is in memory of Lieutenant Commander Erik Kristensen ’95, USN, killed in action in Afghanistan. The Lieutenant Commander Erik Kristensen Crew Trustee RADM Edward K. Kristensen ‘65, USN (Ret.), Trophy was established and his wife, Sam with MIDN Peter Lutter ‘15 by Rear Admiral and Mrs. Edward Kristensen, Lieutanant Commander Kristensen’s friends and classmates to the Navy varsity heavyweight crew member of the graduating class who has contributed the most to the program’s success over his career at the Naval Academy. The recipient of the Lieutenant Commander Erik Kristensen Crew Trophy is Midshipman Peter Lutter ‘15 from Bethesda, MD. He majored in quantitative economics and his service selection was Navy Pilot.

1st Lieutenant Travis L. Manion Wrestling Trophy The 1st Lieutenant Travis L. Manion Wrestling Trophy is in memory of First Lieutenant Travis Manion ’04, USMC, killed in action in Iraq. The 1st Lieutenant Travis L. Manion Wrestling Trophy is presented to the Navy wrestler from the graduating class who displayed outstanding leadership and work habits Trustee LtCol V. Corky Gardner ‘77, USMC throughout his career at the (Ret.), with MIDN Peyton Walsh ‘15 Naval Academy. This year’s recipient is Midshipman Peyton Walsh ‘15 from Glen Allen, VA. Peyton majored in oceanography and his service selection was Marine Corps Ground.

Midshipman Keon Briscoe ’15 and Midshipman Stephanie Simon ’17 are the recipients of the Legends Boxing Trophy for 2015. Keon is from Norfolk, VA. He majored in electrical engineering and his service selection was USMC Pilot. Stephanie is a second class midshipman majoring in operations research.

The Vice Admiral Michael H. Miller Honor Scholar The Vice Admiral Michael H. Miller Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the Trustees, is Samuel G. Anderson from Calhoun, GA. Sam graduated from Gordon Central High School with high honors and was captain of the football and soccer teams. Sam served as the president of the Student Government Association for three years and was National Honor Society president and JROTC Battalion Commander. He led his NJROTC Raiders team to a region win, advancing to state. Sam created a Wounded Warrior Challenge to help wounded veterans in his local community. He also worked two part-time jobs as a landscaper and equestrian caretaker while maintaining a 3.9 GPA and graduating in the top five percent of his class. Sam attended Georgia Boys State and Gordon County Youth Leadership. Under Foundation sponsorship, he attended Marion Military Institute where he was involved in the Flying Tigers Aviation Program.
The Lieutenant Commander Richard E. Bowe Memorial Honor Scholar The Lieutenant Commander Richard E. Bowe Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship established by Bowe’s wife, Virginia, in recognition of her husband’s outstanding service in the U.S. Navy and to our country, is Marion E. Bautista a graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School in Illinois. Marion lettered in swimming and water polo and was captain of the water polo team. As a proactive student in school, she participated in Student Council as the committee head of human relations and senior representative of her class. She played piano and cello and was involved in orchestra, extracurricular music ensembles and the Tri-M honors Music Society. Manuela graduated from Wilson High School where she was student body president her senior year. She was also the president of the SciMaTech Academy (Science, Math and Technology) for three years and captain of the annual blood drive, organizing it for four years. Manuela earned varsity letters in basketball, volleyball, flag football and rowing and managed the varsity football and baseball teams. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was named to the honor roll every semester all four years. David attended Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore. He was a member of the varsity water polo team all four years. David was captain his senior year and lettered in water polo and diving. He was selected for the Best of the East AllTournament Team, All-MIAA team and All-Star Team and received the Eastern Conference Prep Champions MVP Award. Captain Patrick M. Klokow Memorial Honor Scholar The Captain Patrick M. Klokow Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Klokow’s family and many friends, is Benjamin C. Blakeslee from Alexandria, VA. Ben graduated from TC Williams High School. He rowed from eighth through 12th grade, competing and medaling at both the national and international levels. During his high school rowing career, he lettered, served as a varsity captain, was an All-Met honorable mention for the Washington, DC, metro area and received the Coaches Award, the Junior Varsity MVP Award and the Varsity MVP Award. Benjamin was a member of the National Honor Society, a peer tutor and a recipient of the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. During his summers he worked as a cook for Cabbage Island Clambakes in Boothbay Harbor, ME, eventually becoming head of the kitchen. Bond from Niantic, CT. Sarah graduated from East Lyme High School with high honors and outstanding achievements in sports. She earned eight varsity letters during her four years. She lettered in field hockey and indoor track and field her junior and senior years as well as all four years in softball. She was track team captain both her junior and senior years. She was also a volunteer softball coach at the local clinic for three years where she spent nights teaching young girls the fundamentals of the sport and helping them improve their skills. Prusinski, is Anthony G. Cable from Hughesville, MD. Anthony attended La Plata High School where he was consistently on the honor roll and graduated in the top 15 of his class. He was a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Key Club. He wrestled four years on the varsity team where during his freshman year the team won a dual and tournament state championship.Anthony was a two-time state finalist and a one-time state champion, winning states his senior year with an undefeated record. He also played football for three years and was captain for two of those years, playing running back and middle linebacker.Anthony also was a member of the cross country team for one year. Anthony volunteered coaching youth wrestling and in the local area assisting at the local veterans’ home. Outside of school, he enjoyed drag racing with his dad. Carrera from Milton, MA. Jonathan graduated from Milton High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Leader Organization. He also wrestled and played rugby. Jonathan was a three-time captain of the wrestling team and placed second in the New England Championships and sixth at senior nationals. Conway from Grand Island, NY. Carleen graduated from Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart in Eggertsville, NY, with academic honors distinction. Carleen participated in varsity tennis and varsity volleyball and served as captain in each sport her senior year. She competed in tennis all four years of high school and was undefeated and won the championship title and league MVP all four years. She also volunteered within the school community and outside of school. Carleen was senior class officer in student government and was a member of the Donate Life Club, Badminton Club and National Honor Society. She worked for the Town of Grand Island’s recreation department teaching tennis to aspiring beginners. Brendan graduated with high honors from Troy High School and completed the Troy Tech Program, a nationally recognized STEM program.The summer before his senior year, he volunteered 150 hours as an intern in the Gravitational Wave, Physics and Astronomy Center at California State University, Fullerton. He received varsity letters in soccer and track and field. Brendan was 10
captain of his high school varsity soccer team during his senior year and co-captain his junior year. He was MVP-defense and selected for the All-League First Team his junior and senior years. The Class of 1947 Honor Scholar The Class of 1947 Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Robert H. McKinney of the Class of 1947, is Xena J. Gant from Bowie, MD, a graduate of Bowie High School. Xena participated in soccer and softball, lettered in both and received awards for All-State Honor Roll during both soccer and softball seasons. She received the Outstanding Defender Award in 2013 in soccer and was listed as a
player to watch in softball. Xena was involved in NJROTC during all four years of high school and participated in every athletic and drill team meet. During her freshman year, she commanded her unit in Unarmed Exhibition and won first place overall. She was promoted to her battalion’s operations officer during her senior year. Outside of school, she played on travel softball and soccer teams. Her travel softball team won the Save Second Base for Breast Cancer Awareness tournament in 2013 and the Maryland and Delaware State Championships tournament as well. Besides her involvement in sports, she was a member of the National Honor Society during her junior and senior years and participated in various community service projects. Burke Memorial Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the Society of Sponsors, is Evanne L. Gellert. Evanne was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ, and graduated from Sunnyslope High School as 16th in her class of 400. She also received Honor Roll certificates for each semester, along with the AP Scholar with Distinction Award in 2014. Evanne is a competitive volleyball player. She played for Sunnyslope’s varsity volleyball team which has won state 13 years in a row and also skied competitively for Flagstaff Alpine Ski Teams. She was also awarded the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence in 2013. She attended school in Bern, Switzerland, for six months where she learned to speak German. Over her high school career Evanne volunteered more than 300 hours at St.Vincent De Paul Soup kitchen as well as personally soliciting more than 200 shoes to be donated to the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan struck. Under Foundation sponsorship Evanne attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM, where she played volleyball and assumed leadership positions within the regiment.

Michael graduated from South View High School in North Carolina where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Government Association. He was a member of the varsity football and swimming teams and earned All-Conference honors his junior year in swimming. Upon graduation, he was named a member of the Academy of Scholars, which recognized the top 20 students in the
graduating class. His sophomore year he was selected to be a part of the NCHSAA Student ATHLETE Advisory Council, which compromises 16 student-athletes throughout the state who represent each region and more than 200,000 athletic participants whose focus is to exemplify leadership and good sportsmanship. Michael served as a NCHSAA representative for the remaining three years of his school career. During his high school athletic career, Jake lettered in golf, rugby and baseball and served as team captain on various teams all four years. While living in Guam, Jake played for the U16 Junior National Baseball team and in Bahrain was a member of the British Club U18 Dubai Rigby Stevens tournament team. She was a four-time high school and county female Swimmer of the Year and achieved Scholastic All-American status from USA Swimming. Lauren served as team captain on her high school swim team for two years. She was also vice president of the Conservative Club her junior and senior years and was a member of the National Art Honor Society for four years. Lauren received a direct offer to USNA last year but was injured right before I-Day and was medically deferred. Hay who graduated from Souderton Area High School in Souderton, PA. He participated in wrestling, track, baseball, swimming and water polo, lettering in track, water polo and wrestling. He was captain of the water polo team and chosen as MVP his senior year and also earned positions on the first team all-conference, first team all-league, and Pennsylvania second team all-state teams. Outside of school, he participated in Boy Scouts for eight years, reaching the rank of 1st class, and also volunteered at local Miracle League baseball games for children with disabilities and as a coach for youth water polo teams. He is an All-American swimmer and the Kentucky 5,000 freestyle champion. She also played violin for six years in the school orchestra and ran cross country. Anna volunteered at the Federated Church and traveled to South Africa for a short mission trip. Sammie graduated from St. Lucy’s Priory High School, participated in swimming all four years and was captain her
junior and senior years. Sammie holds three school records in the butterfly and backstroke. She has been a swim club member for 16 years and has qualified for Junior Nationals, Nationals, Olympic Trials and All-Meets. Outside of school she was in the school orchestra and traveled to England, Ireland,Wales, Prague and Czech Republic and performed solo in London, Ireland and in front of the Mayor of Prague. Sammie has volunteered in the community by helping with the American Red Cross. Cameron graduated from Sacred Heart Preparatory High School and earned varsity letters in tennis his freshman and sophomore years. As a junior, Cameron was recruited to the elite Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, FL, where he attended K-12 International School and competed in national and international tennis tournaments. Cameron returned to Sacred Heart his senior year and earned his third varsity letter in tennis as the No.1 singles player and led the team to the Central Coast Sectional Team Championship Tournament. He donated his time and tennis talent as a tennis instructor and as a volunteer at the East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring Program (EPATT), a local non-profit organization where he coached students from ages five to 12. He was a competitive rower all four years with the Club Sagamore Rowing Association, placing third in Club Nationals and fifth at the World Indoor Rowing Championship. Stefano was captain of his crew team his junior and senior year and trained competitively in his off seasons with the Iron Empire. She competed at the state championship level in track and field and competitive cheerleading, earning eight varsity letters and serving as track team captain for two years. She was a member of the National Honor Society and president of French National Honor Society. Natalie maintained excellent academic standing and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. She volunteered at high school wrestling meets and the Junior Iditarod and enjoyed tutoring her peers. During his senior year he received the Iron Horse Award for placing every year of his high school career in the New York Private School State wrestling tournament. Alex was named the captain of his wrestling team in 11th grade and continued as captain until he graduated. He was also named the captain of his soccer team for his senior season. Shannon graduated from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. She also held the positions of Student Council senior class director and vice president of the Military Affairs Club. She was a two-sport varsity letter athlete and team captain in soccer and track, competing nationally as well as internationally in soccer. Outside of her alma mater, Shannon led the Young Apostles Teen Church Group as they 14
completed three mission trips to San Salvador, El Salvador and Joplin, MO. She earned more than 1,200 service hours. She was very committed to the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps where she earned the leadership positions of squad leader and Recruit Petty Officer in Charge (RPOC) for 35 recruits. Through the Sea Cadet Program, she was awarded the Certificate of Merit for Excellent Performance, Honor Cadet, Marksmanship and Presidential Physical Fitness Award. Under Foundation sponsorship, Shannon attended Greystone Academy Preparatory School at Schreiner University in Kerrville, TX, where she served as squad leader and academic coordinator.
The G. Thomas Mariano Jr. (USNA ’60) Memorial Honor Scholar The G. Thomas Mariano Jr. (USNA ’60) Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Mariano’s many friends and classmates, is Pierce J. McNamara from New Orleans, LA. A graduate of Isidore Newman School, Pierce was a four-year honor roll student, football player and thrower on the school’s track and field team. Pierce was also a member of his high school Youth in Government club. During his junior year, Pierce served as vice president of the Youth in Government club and was elected to represent the New Orleans district as a State Supreme Court Justice.This year under Foundation sponsorship, Pierce attended Marion Military Institute in Marion,AL, where he was staff sergeant and squad leader.
The Charles E. Whelan Memorial Honor Scholar The Charles E. Whelan Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship established by Ridgway B. Espy Jr., a Foundation Trustee, is Peter B. Mindling from South Lyon, MI. Peter graduated from South Lyon East where he earned varsity letters in football and track. Peter received the Cougar Award for hardest worker on the football team both his junior and senior years. He also was named to the honor roll each year and the Principal’s List for academic excellence. Peter volunteered at food drives for the homeless in his hometown and in Detroit. He also acted as the mentor leader his senior year in a program to help teach freshmen the responsibilities and challenges of high school and how to cope with them. Under Foundation sponsorship this year, Peter attended The Kiski School in Saltsburg, PA, where he played defensive end in football and wrestled.
The Captain N.F. “Red” Stein, Class of 1952, Honor Scholar The Captain N.F. “Red” Stein, Class of 1952, Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Stein’s parents, Harry and Ruth Stein of New Kensington, PA, is Gavin R. O’Donnell a graduate of Lakeland Senior High School in Scott Township, PA. Gavin graduated with honors as a member of both the National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta National mathematics Honor Society. He was a three-year letter winner in football and track and field, serving as captain for both sports his senior year and leading both to the District Championships. Gavin was named to the Times-Tribune All-Region team for track both his junior and senior years, and for football his senior year when he was also named to the Pennsylvania Football News All-State football team. He was a United States track and field Junior Olympian, qualifying for and competing at nationals in both 2011 and 2012 and gaining citations from both Pennsylvania Houses of Congress and the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Gavin is a certified open water lifeguard and has recently been PADI certified in scuba diving.This year under Foundation sponsorship Gavin attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM, and was named to the Superintendent’s List for academics.
The Admiral Charles R. Larson Honor Scholar The Admiral Charles R. Larson Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship established by the Trustees of the Naval Academy Foundation for Larson’s extraordinary service as the Superintendent of the Naval Academy, is Andie N. O’Sullivan fromValley Cottage, NY, who graduated from Nyack High School with high honors. She also volunteered at the local hospital for two summers. Andie played varsity lacrosse and field hockey and was captain in her junior and senior year. In lacrosse, Molly received AllCounty, All-League, All-Section, MVP and New York All-State scholar/athlete team awards. In field hockey, she received All-County, All-League, All-Elite, All-State and MVP recognition.This year Andie attended Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, and received the coaches’ award and first team All-League honors in the Mid Atlantic Prep League in lacrosse.

Bowler Jr., USN (Ret.), Class of 1945 Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the class, is Molly E. O’Sullivan from Centreville,VA, who graduated from Westfield High School in Centreville. Molly was a member of the Student Government Association and played lacrosse and field hockey all four years. She was captain of the lacrosse team, received first team All-Metropolitan area awards her junior year and was named to the honorable mention All-American team her senior year.This year under Foundation sponsorship she attended The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, where she played lacrosse and field hockey.
The Steve Belichick Memorial Scholar The Steve Belichick Memorial Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Belichick’s family and many friends, is Viraj M. Patel from Thomasville, GA.Viraj graduated from Thomas Country Central High School as a Distinguished Merit Scholar.Viraj competed in two sports, football and swimming. He served as a two-time class president while also being involved in Science Olympiad, Future Business Leaders of America and the National Honor Society. He volunteered locally with Habitat for Humanity, the Thomasville Humane Society and the Thomas County Food Bank. His senior year of high school he was named the Georgia Athletic Director’s Association’s Male Student of the Year. This year under Foundation sponsorship he attended Northwestern Preparatory School in Crestline, CA, and attended the University of North Georgia during the spring semester.
The USS Houston CA-30 Memorial Scholar The USS Houston CA-30 Memorial Scholar, recipient of a scholarship established by the USS Houston CA-30 Survivors Association in memory of the ship and her men “Still Standing Watch over the Sunda Strait,” is Tony R. Powers Jr., a graduate of Prince of Peace Christian School in Frisco, TX. Tony was a two-time State Soccer Champion and received All-State and AllDistrict honors while anchoring the varsity soccer team. He was a United States Soccer Federation Development Academy player for Solar Chelsea Soccer Team and a member of the Young Men’s Service League. This year under Foundation sponsorship, Tony attended Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, PA. He was captain of the varsity soccer team, which broke the school’s record and won the

IPSL and the Mid Atlantic Prep League Championships. He was also named First Team All-MAPL and ran varsity track.
The LCDR Erik S. Kristensen Memorial Scholar The LCDR Erik S. Kristensen Memorial Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Kristensen’s family and many friends, is Brandon Sagawinia from Annandale,VA, a graduate of W. T. Woodson High School in Fairfax,VA. Brandon was a member of the varsity crew and cross country teams, lettering in both. He was also a member of National Honor Society, Model UN, Environmental Club and vice president of the student government as a freshman and sophomore. Outside of school, he participated in his church youth group and Summer Swim. Brandon attended Salisbury School in Salisbury, CT, under Foundation sponsorship.
The Major David A. Kish Memorial Honor Scholar The Major David A. Kish Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Kish’s many friends and classmates, is Nicole M. Sarao from Sandyston, NJ. Nicole graduated from Pope John XXII Regional High School in Sparta, NJ, where she lettered in field hockey and track and field. Nicole was a member of the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. Nicole was a four-time All-American in track and field. Nicole has also received her Gold Award, the highest accomplishment in Girl Scouting. Outside of school she volunteered at Newton Medical Center and worked as a lifeguard and program instructor at YMCA Camp Linwood MacDonald. Under Foundation sponsorship, Nicole attended Northfield Mount Hermon School where she lettered in field hockey and track and field. She also worked as an office assistant in the communications office on campus.
The Frederick J. Franco (USNA ’54) Scholar Athlete The Frederick J. Franco (USNA ’54) Scholar Athlete, recipient of a scholarship created by Anthony R. Correnti ’54, in recognition of Franco’s dedication and long-term support of the mission and programs of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, is Matthew C. Sears from Los Altos, CA. Matthew graduated from Los Altos High School where he lettered four times in three sports, cross-country, golf and volleyball, and was named All-League in volleyball. Matthew was a peer tutor and an Eagle Scout as well as a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scouts’ Honor Society. 16
He was the founding president of a Boy Scout Venture Crew, dedicated to the restoration of retired military aircraft at (the former) NAS Moffett Field. Matthew volunteered at his church every Sunday, running the audio booth for the morning and evening services. Matthew attended Greystone Preparatory School in Kerrville, TX, this year under Foundation sponsorship.
The Rear Admiral Thomas C. Lynch Scholar Athlete The Rear Admiral Thomas C. Lynch Scholar Athlete, recipient of a scholarship established by the Trustees of the Foundation, is Henry G. Secrist who graduated from Blacksburg High School in Blacksburg,VA. Hank was in the top 10 percent of his class and was on honor roll all four years. In addition to being an active member of the volunteer organizations of the Spanish National Honor Society and Beta Club, he would often drive to Salem,VA, on the weekends to work with the hospice unit of the Veterans Administration Hospital. Hank was an active all-year runner, competing in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country, where he lettered every year. Under Foundation sponsorship, Hank attended Greystone Preparatory School at Schreiner University in Kerrville,TX.

Strachan ’44, a Foundation Associate Trustee, is Amy C. Skaggs from Manassas,VA. Amy graduated from Osbourn High School where she lettered in field hockey, swimming and track and served as team captain in all three sports her senior year. She was president of the National Honor Society as well as a Virginia Girls’ delegate. She participated in NJROTC for four years where she served as the administration officer and chief of staff officer.Amy remained on the academic honor roll all through school and graduated summa cum laude. She attended Northfield Mount Hermon School in Northfield, MA, this year where she was a member of the outdoor team and a varsity swimmer.
The Class of 1949 Memorial Honor Scholar The Class of 1949 Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the class, is Karli A. Sottung from Westfield, NJ. Karli graduated from Westfield High School, played varsity soccer all four years and was nominated to All-County and All-State all four years. Karli was also All-American her senior year and was chosen as soccer team captain. Karli volunteered with Samaritans
Purse to help renovate houses after Hurricane Sandy. She was also involved in Young Life. She attended The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, where she played soccer.
Honor Society and Relay for Life. She was also a member of the student council where she led the effort for promoting community service throughout her school. Marie attended Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ, during her Foundation year.
The Class of 1955 Honor Scholar The Class of 1955 Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the class, is Luke J. Sullivan from Baltimore, MD. Luke graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute where he was a member of the National Honor Society and a volunteer at the William S. Baer School for disabled students. He also volunteered at his church’s community center and the school’s writing center. Luke lettered in track and cross country and was captain of the cross country team his senior year. He was named to the honor roll all four years and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. During his senior year, he researched blue crab viruses at the IMET Center. Outside of school, he worked on a cattle farm on the weekends as well as ran his own business, L&S Hauling and Landscaping. Luke attended The Hill School in Pottstown, PA, and ran track.
The Captain William J. Strachan ’19 Memorial Honor Scholar The Captain William J. Strachan ’19 Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Strachan’s family, is Dylan F. Sweeney, who graduated from Trevor Day School in NewYork, NY, and was a nationally ranked squash player who ranked as high as 23rd in U.S. Junior Squash. He also competed at the Gold level throughout competitions in North America and Europe. He is also a competitive triathlete and runner. Dylan volunteers with Achilles International, the running club for the disabled, and served as a guide for a 22-year-old runner with autism in the 2013 NYC Marathon. Dylan also volunteers with Special Needs Activities Center for Kids, which provides after school and weekend activities for children with autism. Dylan attended The Hill School in Pottstown, PA, and played squash.
The Class of 1946 Honor Scholar The Class of 1946 Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the class, is Taylor C.Welker from Stevenson Ranch, CA.Taylor graduated from West Ranch High School where she was a member of the varsity cross country and track and field teams all four years. She was captain of the cross country team her senior year. Taylor was also a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Support Our Troops Club. Taylor attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM, under her year of Foundation sponsorship.
The Society of Sponsors Honor Scholar The Society of Sponsors Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the Trustees of the Naval Academy Foundation, is Michaela S. White from Charleston, SC. She attended Ashley Hall where she was on Student Council for three years and participated in varsity volleyball, cross country and track, where she was the captain for three years. Michaela holds six school records in track. She was a member of the Mayor’s Youth Commission, Charleston Youth Serve, Ronald McDonald House Junior Board and a Girl Scout for more than 10 years, earning her Bronze and Silver Awards. Under Foundation sponsorship, Michaela attended Mercersburg Academy where she ran cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. She was also a member of African American Student Union and Young Conservation Club secretary.
