FROM THE CHAIRMAN I’m very pleased to report that it’s been another outstanding year for the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs! Since our RADM Lynch ‘64, USN (Ret.) inception in 1944, we have always provided deserving students an opportunity to enter the Naval Academy via our preparatory school program. We have sponsored 4,200 Naval Academy graduates over the years and today we have 200 Foundation prep school graduates within the Brigade of Midshipmen. Equally important and as part of our mission to maintain and enhance the athletic excellence programs, we provide critical financial support to all physical mission areas: club, intramural and varsity athletic programs. We also support athletic programs at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, RI. Examples of this critical support are listed on Page 7 of this newsletter. Our Foundation, which comprises 300 active Trustees and Emeriti, is an integral part of the Naval Academy’s Foundation’s overall fundraising efforts. Specifically, our small group is focused on the physical mission aspects of the Foundation’s fundraising priorities, thereby continuing our tradition of relevance and responsiveness to the Naval Academy. Athletic excellence is now our primary fundraising focus; it’s the lifeblood of our organization. We ask all our Trustees to support this important program in whatever manner possible. I’m pleased that, thanks to the efforts of Trustee Skip Orr ’65, we now have 24 Naval Academy classes that have included the Fund for Athletic Excellence as part of their ongoing five-year class
fundraising projects. Fellow Trustees are including athletic excellence in their estate plans as well. It’s an “all hands on deck” effort! During the past year, we provided almost $3 million in support of recruiting, team and coaches’ travel, trophies, team equipment, radio broadcasting, athletic facilities and annual coach/midshipmen athletic awards. We are committed to continue this vital funding stream for our varsity, club and intramural programs. I’m proud to announce the following new Trustees of our vibrant and growing organization who were inducted at our fall and spring meetings: Thomas Abernethy ’78 James M. Arrison IV ’92 David Cooper ’57 Gregory Glaros ’86 Bill Kirvan ’62 Sam Locklear ’77 Henry Mauz ’59 Perry Martini ’71 J.“Mike” McNallen ’71 Brian Rathjen ’88 Thomas Solak ’60 Richard Thayer ’77 Michael Yeager ’76

ABOUT US Founded in 1944, the Naval Academy Athletic and Scholarship Program, a division of the United States Naval Academy Foundation, encourages and supports athletic excellence at the Naval Academy. The program is responsible for grants and awards that recognize superiority in athletics and a comprehensive scholarship program to ensure that the Naval Academy has the best scholar-athletes in the nation. MISSION To provide non financial resources and to support sustainable private funding where government funds are not available, for: (A) The Physical Mission which is a vital element in developing all Midshipmen to become leaders in the Navy, Marine Corps and Nation and (B) Comprehensive preparatory school scholarship programs necessary to further develop high potential Midshipmen candidates.
Among the notable legacy activity within the Foundation, recently inducted “Jamie” Arrison IV is the son of Trustee, Jim Arrison ’64. Jamie’s son, James Matthew Arrison V completed a year of Foundation sponsorship at The Peddie School and entered with the Class of 2021 … the family tradition continues! Trustee, Jim Flatley’s ’56 grandson, Tommy Brophy, is also a member of this class following a Foundation prep year at The Kiski School. New continued
ATHLETIC SUPPORT Each year, the Foundation provides more than $2 million in direct support for all types of athletic activities at the Naval Academy. This includes extensive financial support to not only the 33 varsity teams, but also the many club and intramural teams as well as to the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI. SCHOLARSHIPS Through a need-based scholarship program, the Foundation provides one year of post-high school education to qualified young men and women who need further academic preparation before they enter the Naval Academy. Thanks to the Foundation's sponsorship, more than 4,000 motivated candidates with excellent leadership, scholastic and athletic potential have graduated from the Naval Academy since 1944. It is a “win-win” for the Naval Academy and for these outstanding candidates!

We are 14-2 in the conference since joining it in 2015.With Ken Niumatalolo as Navy’s head coach and an aggressive but realistic schedule, we’re optimistic that we’ll extend our current run of successful seasons and win back the Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy. Our success in the Patriot League, where Navy competes in many of its varsity sports, has been another highlight. We have won the prestigious President’s Cup, as the most successful athletic program in the league, five of the past six years. And in the annual Army/Navy series of all varsity sports, Navy won 14 of 23 (61 percent) head-to-head N-Star competitions this past year. Much of the renovation work at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium was funded by our organization. Those of you who have enjoyed the amenities of the new Akerson Tower, which provides several open club areas, additional suites, recruiting venues, a new scoreboard and television facilities, can attest to the quality workmanship and added game enjoyment. The South Club area there has been named in honor of our Foundation Trustees in recognition of our support. At this year’s fall and spring Trustee meetings, we recognized three Navy coaches for their respective outstanding seasons.
They were Al Cantello (Men’s Cross Country), Kip Simons (Men’s Gymnastics) and Paul Kostacopoulos (Men’s Baseball). Congratulations to these coaches for not only being superb coaches but also role models and mentors to our midshipmen athletes. Additionally, the Foundation has been a key part of the upcoming Navy Athletic Hall of Fame renovation in Lejeune Hall. This effort has been led by Trustee Jeff Johnson ’79. The athletic department headquarters at
Ricketts Hall will soon be starting a major renovation and expansion, primarily funded by Trustee Ron Terwilliger ’63. These projects greatly enhance the world-class athletic facilities offered at the Naval Academy, and both are being done with private funding. We all can be very proud of this legacy of excellence. Our Naval Academy and the midshipmen deserve nothing less. I thank each of you for your personal support and giving so generously of your time, treasure and talent. As noted earlier, our efforts have made a huge impact on overall athletic excellence within the Brigade and will continue to do so in the future. We could not do it without you. Thank you and Go Navy!

CAPT Wallace ’72, USN (Ret.)
I am privileged to work with so many wonderful families and candidates, our own Alumni Association and Foundation, as well as the staffs of the Naval Academy admissions and
athletic departments. Our spring and fall meetings were each attended by many of our 250 active Trustees and their spouses. The focus at both events was staying relevant to the Naval Academy and promoting the Fund for Athletic Excellence and the prep school program. While we are doing very well overall, we still need your help in our mission to support both important programs. The information provided in the next column gives you an idea of the wonderful impact we’ve had over the past year.
Athletic Support Our purpose is to remain relevant and responsive to the needs of the Naval Academy. We have achieved that by increasing our financial support for Navy athletic programs over the past several years. There are new recognition levels (“Patron’s Level”– $2500/year, “Fleet Club”–$5000/year, “Rip Miller”–$10,000/year and “Friends of Navy Athletics”–$25,000/ year x 5 years) for those Trustees, parents and friends who support athletic excellence. In our prep school program, we have also increased the amount of tuition assistance for each of our sponsored students. Finally, our Trustees have stepped up and are involved in a wide range of volunteer projects to assist Navy athletic programs and educate our midshipman athletes about the rich heritage and tradition of which they are now a part. Thanks again for your sincere commitment to this unique foundation!
Scholarship Program We completed another successful admissions cycle for the entering Class of 2021 on 29 June. Of the 50 original Foundationsponsored prep school students, 44 (24 men and 20 women) earned their appointments and became midshipmen on Induction Day. A couple of them had been delayed for a year due to medical issues, but they checked in this summer after successful rehab during prep school. We lost two who voluntarily resigned from the program early in the school year. We lost three more who were unable to pass the Navy PRT (Physical Readiness Test) and one for a disciplinary problem. All the rest successfully earned their appointments for an outstanding 88 percent matriculation rate! We wish the Class of 2021 the very best.
