From the Chairman

ince the inception of our Foundation in 1944, we have provided promising students an opportunity to enter the Naval Academy via our preparatory school program. Our program has sponsored more than 3,800 deserving candidates to the Naval Academy over the years and today we have 250 Foundation students within the Brigade of Midshipmen. Equally important, and in consonance with our mission to maintain and enhance the Academy’s Athletic Excellence (AE), we provide critical financial support to all Physical Mission areas—club, intramural and varsity athletic programs.We also support athletic programs at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, RI. Our Foundation, which includes Trustees, emeriti, friends and Foundation parents, was an integral part of the last $250-million-plus comprehensive campaign to support the U.S. Naval Academy. In fact, our small group alone contributed more than $41 million towards the campaign goal, thereby continuing our tradition of relevance and responsiveness to the Academy. To preserve this tradition of support, a Fund for Athletic Excellence was established. Athletic Excellence is now our primary fundraising focus;

it’s the lifeblood of the organization. We ask all our Trustees to support this important program. Most classes have now included the Athletic Excellence fund as part of their ongoing class fundraising projects and Trustees are including AE in their estate plans. It’s a group effort! The strength and vitality of our organization continues as evidenced by the induction of the following 19 new Trustees, whom we welcomed at our fall and spring meetings: Chairman RADM Tom Lynch ’64, USN (Ret.)

I am saddened to report the passing of 11 fellow Trustees:

On a more positive note, the renaissance of Navy athletics continues unabated. If you have visited Annapolis

recently, you have seen the extraordinary transformation that has taken place at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It’s now recognized as the most beautiful mid-sized college football stadium in the country! More importantly, it is a fitting memorial to the sacrifice made by our Navy and Marine Corps personnel who have participated in each of our nation’s wars and continue today in the global war on terror. Several new suites, recruiting areas, new scoreboard and television facilities have been added for the 2014 football season. Our athletic department headquarters, Ricketts Hall, will soon be undergoing a major renovation and expansion. These projects greatly enhance our world-class athletic facilities. Our Midshipmen student-athletes deserve nothing less. Again, our Foundation’s purpose is to respond to the needs of the Superintendent.We have achieved that by increasing our financial support for Navy athletic programs over the past several years. There are new recognition levels (Fleet Club—$5,000/yr; Rip Miller— $15,000/yr; and Friends of Navy Athletics—$25,000/yr x 5 years) for those Trustees, parents and friends who support Athletic Excellence.We have also increased the amount of tuition assistance for each of our prep school students. Finally, our Trustees have stepped up and are involved in a wide range of volunteer projects to assist Navy athletic programs and educate our Midshipmen athletes about the rich heritage and tradition of which they are now a part.This past spring, we celebrated more than 70 years (1944-2014) of support to the Naval Academy!

From the Executive Director

his has been another outstanding year for our Athletic and Scholarship Program. I’ve really enjoyed and am privileged to work with so many wonderful families and candidates, our own Alumni Association and Foundation, and the staffs of the Naval Academy admissions and athletic departments. We held our spring and fall meetings and each was attended by many of our 250 active Trustees and their spouses.The focus at both events was staying relevant to the Naval Academy and promoting the Fund for Athletic Excellence and the prep school program. Our spring 2014 dinner banquet was especially memorable as we celebrated our 70th anniversary in historic Dahlgren Hall.While we are doing very well overall, we still need your help in our mission to support both important programs.The information provided below gives you an idea of the wonderful impact we’ve had over the past year.

Athletic Support An important part of our mission is, of course, the Foundation’s monetary support to the Naval Academy and Naval Academy Athletic Association for varsity, club and intramural sports programs. Much of the renovation work at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium was funded by our organization.We are also committed to keeping the current football coaching staff intact.With Ken Niumatalolo as Navy’s head coach and an aggressive but realistic schedule this year, we have a great opportunity to extend our current run of successful seasons and retain the Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy. That coaching staff stability is critical to the success of the program. During the past year, we provided more than $1.6 million in private grants for recruiting, team and coaches’ travel, trophies, team equipment, radio broadcasting, athletic facilities and annual coaches and Midshipmen athletic awards.We

are committed to providing almost $2.0 million during the upcoming year to not just the major sports but all varsity, club and intramural teams at the Naval Academy. In just the last several years, our unique organization has contributed significantly to the Naval Academy,

the preparatory school program and Navy athletics.We could not accomplish this without the generous contributions each year from our Trustees, parents and friends of the Naval Academy.Thanks again for your sincere commitment to this unique Foundation!

Scholarship Programs We completed another successful admissions cycle for the entering Class of 2018 at USNA on 1 July. Of the 45 original Foundationsponsored prep school students, 38 (25 men and 13 women) became midshipmen on Induction Day for an outstanding 85 percent success rate. One candidate was delayed for a year due to medical problems, but should receive her appointment next year if all goes well with her recovery. Two new scholarships were established this past year: The VADM Michael H. Miller Honor Scholarship was created by our Trustees to honor Admiral Miller’s outstanding four-year tour as Superintendent at the Naval Academy.

The CDR Michael B. Clark, USNA (USNA, 1969) Memorial Honor Scholarship created by his wife Lisa Quadrini, Commander Clark’s classmates and football teammates. We hosted a wonderful reception the day before Induction Day for excited Foundation students and their families at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium dining facility. More than 300 people attended the event. It was a great way to say “Welcome Aboard!” to the newest Plebe class. USNA Superintendent,

VADM Michael H. Miller ’74, USN; USNA Commandant, CAPT Bill Byrne ’87, USN and our Alumni Association/Foundation President/ CEO, Byron Marchant ’78, were there along with many of our Trustees and their spouses. Next year’s Foundation prep class (USNA 2019) is already formed, with 55 prep students enrolled at affiliated prep schools for next year (2014-2015).Their credentials are just as impressive. Historically, 95 percent of our sponsorees become midshipmen each year. Of that number, almost 90 percent will graduate in four years from USNA with a Bachelor of Science degree, the highest of any accession source to USNA. So, this program is a win-win for our students and the Naval Academy! Admiral Louis E. Denfeld Memorial Award The Admiral Louis E. Denfeld Memorial Award recognizes that Foundation-sponsored member of the graduating class who has best displayed traits of leadership, demonstrated academic proficiency and participated extensively in extracurricular activities.This award honors Admiral Denfeld, a 1912 graduate of USNA, a destroyerman in WW-I, a submariner in the ’20s and ’30s, and Chief of Naval Operations in 1947. After retirement, he became the original Chairman of the Foundation Trustees’ Executive Committee. This year’s recipient of the Denfeld Award was Midshipman Ben Ziemski from Bel Air, MD. Ben attended Northwestern Preparatory School under Foundation sponsorship. He majored in oceanography and his service selection was Navy Pilot.

H. McCoy Jones Award The H. McCoy Jones Award recognizes that Foundation-sponsored member of the graduating class who has demonstrated the highest degree of excellence in the Naval Academy

This award honors “Piggy” Jones, one of the founders of the Naval Academy Foundation, who personally ran the preparatory school program during the ’40s and ’50s. This year’s recipient of the Jones’ Award was Midshipman Kevin Ginn from Trenton, SC. Kevin attended Hargrave Military Academy as a Foundation-sponsored student. He majored in oceanography and his service selection was Special Warfare (SEAL).

E.E. “Rip” Miller Varsity Football Award The E.E. “Rip” Miller Varsity Football Trophy is presented annually by the Naval Academy Foundation to that member of the varsity football squad who is voted by his teammates as having contributed the most to the team. This award is a lasting tribute to Rip Miller, who played a major role in the development of Navy football as coach and assistant director of athletics for 48 years, 1926-74. This year’s recipient of the Rip Miller Award was Midshipman Keenan Reynolds from Antioch, TN. Keenan is majoring in political

Joe Bellino Trophy The Joe Bellino Trophy is in honor of Joe Bellino ’61. Joe led the Navy team over three years and to an Orange Bowl berth in 1961. Playing both ways, Bellino scored 31 touchdowns, amassed 1,664 yards rushing and set 15 Naval Academy records. He was the 1960 Heisman Trophy winner, as well as a unanimous First-Team All-American, the Maxwell Award winner, and the recipient of both the Thompson Trophy and the Naval Academy Athletic Association Sword in 1961 and a 1977 inductee to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.The Joe Bellino Trophy is presented to the Navy varsity football player of the graduating class who is the leading ground gainer over his playing

Napoleon McCallum Trophy The Napoleon McCallum Trophy is in honor of Napoleon McCallum ’85. Napoleon ranks second in NCAA Div-I history for all-purpose yards with 7,172 and once held 26 Naval Academy records. He was a consensus First-Team All-American halfback in 1983 and 1985, after completing his active duty obligation, he played for the Oakland Raiders until a knee injury forced his retirement. He is a 2003 inductee of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.This trophy is presented by the Trustees of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation Athletic and Scholarship Programs and recognizes the Navy varsity football player of the graduating class who has gained the most all-purpose yards in his varsity playing career. This year’s recipient was Midshipman Marcus Thomas

Cheryl was the winner of 12 varsity letters in swimming, crew and volleyball. She is a recipient of the Thompson Trophy and the Admiral Lawrence Sword. Cheryl was also inducted into the Navy Hall of Fame for swimming. She achieved the position of Regimental Commander and was captain of the swim team and the volleyball team. Cheryl majored in systems engineering with a QPR of 3.5 and was also selected as an academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Presented by the Trustees of the U.S.

Naval Academy Foundation Athletic and Scholarship Programs, the Cheryl Dolyniuk Trophy recognizes that female midshipman of the graduating class who has excelled in athletics, leadership and academics during her four years at the Academy. This year’s recipient of the Dolyniuk Trophy is Midshipman Elizabeth Hoerner from Lititz, PA. She majored in oceanography (Honors) and her service selection was Submarine (Nuclear).

Joe Duff/Max Bishop Baseball Trophy The Joe Duff/Max Bishop Baseball Trophy is in honor of Navy Coaches Joe Duff and Max Bishop. Max Bishop guided Navy to 314 wins during his 25 years as head coach from 1937-1961. Joe Duff served as the Head Coach from 1962-1993 and won a school-record 595 games.Their players remember the discipline they taught them on the athletic field and the ideals they instilled in them as they headed off to their military careers.They were coaches, they were teachers and they prepared the players for their careers in military service and in life.

Foundation Prep School Students ’18

The Class of 1922 Honor Scholar The Class of 1922 Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the Class, is Emani M. Alston from Beaufort, SC. Emani graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. She participated in her school’s chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts Emani M. Alston and was a member of the Eagles Dance Group Elite. Emani helped with a program to bond with the elderly and taught children test-taking skills. She was the president of her school chapter of the National Latin Honor Society where her focus was on bringing back interest in Latin to the school. She also studied the art of Chun Kuk Do for seven years. Emani was a cellist in the Beaufort Youth Orchestra for three years. Under Foundation sponsorship, Emani attended Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL, where she tutored other students in physics. The Major General George Olmsted Memorial Honor Scholar The Major General George Olmsted Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Ridgeway Espy, a Foundation Trustee, is Hyo J. Baek from Fairborn, OH. Hyo graduated from Carroll High School in Hyo J. Baek Ohio. He was a member of the National Latin Honor Society and Co-Consul of the Latin Club. He also played football for one year. Hyo played ice hockey all four years in high school and was drafted in 2012 for the Queen City Steam NA3HL. He also earned a black belt in Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at the age of nine. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity at his church with the youth group. He was on the honor roll all four years at Carroll High School. Hyo attended Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, PA, under Foundation sponsorship and was on the Dean’s List—High Honors.

The Commander William Earl Fannin USN (Ret.), Class of 1945, Memorial Honor Scholar The Commander William Earl Fannin, USN (Ret.), Class of 1945, Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Fannin’s classmates, is Jackson A. Baker, a graduate of Penns Grove High School Jackson A. Baker in Penns Grove, NJ. Jackson graduated eighth in his class. He lettered in track and wrestling all four years and three years in soccer. He was also a two-year team captain for wrestling and soccer and became captain of the track team during his senior year. Jackson was a member of his school’s marching band holding positions such as drumline captain, band captain and band president. Outside of his high school he was a member of the youth choir and was in chorus at his church. This year, Jackson attended Valley Forge Military College where he participated in Band Company, made the Dean’s List and was promoted to the rank of Cadet Sergeant. The Lieutenant Commander Richard E. Bowe Memorial Honor Scholar The Lieutenant Commander Richard E. Bowe Memorial Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship established by Bowe’s wife,Virginia, in recognition of his outstanding service in the U.S. Navy and Betty A. Ballard to our country, is Betty A. Ballard from Hull-Daisetta,TX. Winter Park and became a libero and outstanding defense for an Orlando volleyball club team.They won the Florida State title in her sophomore year. After Desiree’s sophomore year, she rowed for Winter Park crew team where her boat won two national titles and two state titles. She was also part of the International Baccalaureate Academic Program, National Honor Society, National Society for High School Scholars, French Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society and Math Honor Society. Desiree was an active member of the Senior and Junior Class Cabinet for Winter Park High School. Outside of academics, Desiree actively volunteered for her local community such as Coalition for the Homeless in Orlando where she assisted in the making and distribution of hot meals, sandwiches, fruits and drinks to the homeless folks. She was an active volunteer at the Orlando Veterans Medical Clinic. Desiree would help make food and serve meals every week while at the Veterans Medical Clinic. Eshenour, a graduate of Waterloo High School in Waterloo, NY. Charlie graduated Charles A. Eshenour with an Advanced Regents diploma and honors in science. He received the New York State Series Scholarship and Triple C award. He was a secretary of the National Honor Society and the Waterloo High School Varsity Club president. He was a three-time captain of the varsity football, wrestling and lacrosse teams. He also was a first-team All New York State football player and a Section Five Class BBB Wrestling champion. Charlie was a member of the Sons of the American Legion volunteering for veterans. Festa from Midlothian,VA. Kyle Kyle A. Festa graduated from Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond where he participated in soccer and was a member of the Richmond Royals and Richard General’s Ice Hockey teams. Kyle’s U18 hockey team competed in the USA Nationals, finishing third in the nation in 2012. He was selected to attend VA Boys State where he was elected a state senator. Outside of school, he volunteered and coached underprivileged youth and worked with the VA Food Bank. Kamara a three-year varsity track athlete, a four year NJROTC cadet and a member of both the National Honor Society and the Virginian-Pilot Scholastic Achievement Team. She was recommended for the E.E. Brickell Scholarship, nominated for the Optimist Club of Virginia Beach, was awarded the Virginia Beach Sports Club Scholarship and was a recipient of the NJROTC scholarship. Flor attended Aviation High School in Queens, NY, where Flor M. Landi she was in the FAA program for four years and obtained her airframe and power plant certifications. During her fifth year she obtained her FAA Airframe license and will pursue her FAA Power Plant license. Flor was awarded the USMC Scholarship Excellence Award, the Women in Aviation Award, the Queens County District Attorney Certificate of Merit

and the Female Public Schools Athletic League Award. She participated in varsity track and varsity volleyball. Outside of school, Flor participated in the Latin Stars Soccer Academy as a goalkeeper and defender. Looney Waldorf, MD. Joshua graduated from North Point High School in Waldorf. Joshua was awarded Principal’s Honor Roll all through school. He was a three-sport varsity student-athlete. Joshua earned letters in baseball, football and track & field. He earned the Athlete Scholar Award all four years. Outside of school, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, tutored students in physics and math and attended the Naval Academy Summer Seminar. McFann water polo, Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling, hula and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.Throughout high school his hula group travelled, performed and shared cultural traditions in San Francisco, New York and Laguna Beach. In his senior year, Logan’s outrigger paddling team placed third in the state. Francisco graduated from Captain John L. Chapin High School in El Paso, Francisco E. Perry TX. He spent all four years at the school completing the PLTW Pre-Engineering Magnet Program. He played wide receiver on the football team and also ran varsity track. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Math Club and the National Math Honor Society and was a class officer. Upon graduation, he was named the All-Chapin Boy, which recognizes the individual of the school who possesses great integrity, character, respect, leadership and humility. Alan graduated from Del Norte High School in San Diego, CA. He was a Alan W. Rogers student ambassador and member of the Link Crew Club. He also swam on the varsity swim team and was on the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Navy SEAL Invitational Team. Alan was captain of both teams and voted Most Valuable for three years on the swim team. The USNA Class of 1960 Memorial Scholar The USNA Class of 1960 Memorial Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the class, honors the sacrifice and bravery of classmates Donnie Lee Darrow, Alexander McIver Jr., William Marshall Roark and Martin Nelson Tull, who were Lunsford D. Schock killed in action while in the service of our country, is Lunsford D. Schock from St. Louis, MO. He attended Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School. His love of swimming began at the age of three when he joined his first swim team. Lunsford moved his attention in the pool to water polo in the seventh grade. He was a leader on three Junior Olympic teams, lettered in eight varsity seasons (four water polo, four swimming) and was named captain by coaches and peers for both swimming and water polo his junior and senior years. Lunsford attended The Hill School in Pottstown, PA, where he participated in varsity water polo and swimming and hopes to swim and play water polo at the Naval Academy.

The Class of 1942 Honor Scholar The Class of 1942 Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the class, is Young Tae Seo from Los Angeles, CA.Young Tae graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in Los Angeles. He swam all four years and received letters from the Glendale Young Tae Seo District superintendent for winning the CIF-SS Division 2 title. He was All-American all four years.Young Tao was captain of the swim team and competed in 2012 US Olympic trials. He received Swimmer of the Year for four years and Athlete of the Year for two years. He holds seven Southern California Records, two CIF-SS Division two records, seven league records, and is ranked number seven in the nation for the class of 2013. He also broke Michael Phelps’ Age Group Record. Under Foundation sponsorship this year,Young Tae attended The Kiski School in Saltsburg, PA. The Louis William Alter Memorial Scholar Athlete The Louis William Alter Memorial Scholar Athlete, created by Alter’s son L.William Alter Jr., a Foundation Trustee, is Joseph C. Shavel from Princeton, NJ. Joseph graduated from Princeton High School. He was involved in student Joseph C. Shavel government and was a member of the TEEN PEP peer education program. Joseph was a varsity rower for the Mercer Junior Rowing Club for three years as well as captain of the team his senior year. While at Mercer, Joseph’s boat finished in 6th place in 2012 as well as 19th place in 2013 at the US Rowing Youth National Championship. Joseph was a member of the US Rowing Junior National Development Team in 2012. He received an AP Scholar award and was an active member in Princeton Special Sports.This year under Foundation sponsorship, he attended The Kent School in Kent, CT, where he rowed on the varsity boat. The Class of 1955 Honor Scholar The Class of 1955 Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by the class, is Garrett P. Southerland from North Richland Hills, TX. Garrett graduated from Richland Senior High School in North Richland Hills. He Garrett P. Southerland graduated in the top quartile as a junior while earning enough credits to acquire an Associate of Arts degree. Garrett was honored to be elected to attend Harvard University’s

Summer School Program, where he met students from all over the world. Under Foundation sponsorship, Garrett attended Greystone Preparatory School at Schreiner University in Kerrville,TX, where he excelled in academics and was a member of the IDPA Pistol Shooting Team.

The Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy, Mrs. Arleigh A. Burke Memorial Scholar The Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy, Mrs. Arleigh A. Burke Memorial Scholar, created by the Society of Sponsors, is Annabel R. Tomes from San Diego, CA. Annabel attended Canyon Annabel R. Tomes Crest Academy in San Diego. She was a competitive swimmer for 12 years and a varsity swimmer all through high school, team captain during her senior year and was selected for the All-Star team for the last three years. She was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and involved in her church youth group. Outside of school, she enjoys photography, hiking, surfing, camping and boating. This year, Annabel attended The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, under Foundation sponsorship. The Rear Admiral Robert B. Erly Honor Scholar The Rear Admiral Robert B. Erly Honor Scholar, recipient of a scholarship created by Erly’s wife, Lois R. Erly, is Suzanne L. Toms from Cypress, CA. Suzanne graduated with honors from Oxford Academy in Cypress. Oxford Academy is ranked the 7th Best Public Suzanne L. Toms School by US News and World Report. She was raised in Seal Beach, CA, and was introduced to rowing in the eighth grade as a member of the Long Beach Junior Crew. Throughout her high school rowing career, she has medaled at US Rowing Northwest Regionals, U.S. Rowing Nationals and the largest race in America, Head of the Charles. Suzanne was team captain her junior and senior years. Outside of school and athletics, she participated in charities for the homeless, overseas soldiers and veterans. Under Foundation sponsorship, Suzanne attended Kent School in Kent, CT, this year.
