FROM THE CHAIRMAN: 75 YEARS OF SUPPORT TO USNA! I’m very pleased to report that it’s been another outstanding year for the USNA Foundation! Since our inception in 1944, we have provided deserving students an opportunity to enter the Naval Academy via the preparatory school program. We have sponsored more than 4,300 USNA graduates over the years and today we have RADM TOM LYNCH ’64, USN (RET.) 200 Foundation prep school graduates within the Brigade of Midshipmen. Equally important and as part of our mission to maintain and enhance the Athletic Excellence programs, we provide critical financial support to all Physical Mission areas: club, intramural and varsity athletic programs. We’ll be celebrating our 75th Anniversary (1944 – 2019) at a dinner banquet in November! A YEAR OF TRANSITION… This year has been a significant year of transition for our unique organization and the Academy. In April we announced eight new Committee Chairs as well as a new outreach initiative to be led by Maurice Tosé. In May we welcomed a new Commandant of Midshipmen and in July a new Superintendent. We announced Captain Ed Wallace’s replacement over the summer, and he will step down in December of this year. The true mark of a great institution is to withstand big changes and continue to thrive in a fast-paced environment. We intend to do just that! I am particularly enthusiastic about the outreach initiative. Our organization is uniquely positioned to be a catalyst to enhance alumni interest and participation across the board in all activities related to strengthening the “links in the chain” of USNA support. The vision for the new outreach initiative is the coordination of A&SP Trustee activity with all USNA and alumni related events in each state. More specific information will be forthcoming, but to be successful each of our Trustees will be asked to join their local alumni chapter and assist in the exchange of alumni information throughout their community. Athletic & Scholarship Programs, comprised of more than 300 active Trustees and Emeriti, is an integral part of Called to Serve, Daring to Lead: The Naval Academy Campaign. Specifically, our small group 2
is focused on the $85 million “Physical Mission” portion of the campaign, thereby continuing a tradition of relevance and responsiveness to the Naval Academy. To preserve this tradition of support, an Athletic Excellence Fund was established. Athletic Excellence is now our primary fundraising focus; it’s the lifeblood of our organization. We ask all Trustees to support this important program in whatever manner possible. Fellow Trustees are encouraged to include Athletic Excellence in their estate plans as well. As you may know, I also Chair the Physical Mission Principal Gifts Committee to add more focus to this important challenge. It’s an “all hands on deck” effort! I’m proud to announce the following new Trustees who were inducted at our fall and spring meetings. NEW TRUSTEE Peter Andrews ’98 Mark Heinrich ’79 Tim Keating ’71 Wendy Lawrence ’81 Alan Lerchbacker ’74 Mara Matthes ’82 Jeffrey Melody ’96 Terry Arnold Jon Greenert ’75 Jeff Holloway ’77 Sean Quirk ’99 Patricia Whitney ’81

RENDERING OF RON TERWILLIGER CENTER FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES AT RICKETTS HALL
Football will have a great season and win back the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy. Much of the renovation work at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium was funded by our organization as well. Many of you have enjoyed the amenities of the Akerson Tower, which provides several open club areas, additional suites, recruiting venues and television facilities. The South Club area there has been named in honor of the Foundation Trustees in recognition of all their support. Our success in the Patriot League, where Navy competes in many of its varsity sports, has continued. We have won the prestigious President’s Cup, as the most successful athletic program in the league, seven of the past eight years. In the annual Army-Navy series of all varsity sports Navy won 13, lost 9 and tied 2 head-to-head N-Star competitions this past year. Again, Navy’s athletic program is strong and successful—thanks to your great support! Navy’s athletic department headquarters, Ricketts Hall, will soon become the Terwilliger Center for
Student-Athletes following a major renovation and expansion funded primarily by Trustee Ron Terwilliger ’63. Its ribbon cutting will be in November. These projects are greatly enhancing the world-class athletic facilities offered at the Naval Academy, and all have been made possible with private funding. We all can be very proud of this legacy of excellence. The Naval Academy and the Midshipmen deserve nothing less. I thank each of you for your personal support through your time, treasure and talent. As noted earlier, our efforts have made a huge impact on overall athletic excellence within the Brigade and will continue to do so in the future. We could not do it without you. Thank you and Go Navy!
Rear Admiral Thomas C. Lynch ’64, USN (Ret.) Chairman
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: FAREWELL As many of you know, this will be my last year in this job. I’ll be retiring in December 2019. I’ve been the VP/Executive Director of the USNA Foundation prep school program now for 17 years, since 2002. Since then, I’ve gotten to know many of you Trustees, parents and USNA CAPT ED WALLACE ’72, USN (RET.) candidates very well. It’s been a wonderful experience, not only to work with so many fine future
Naval Academy midshipmen and naval officers, but also to work with great folks such as each of you! Our unique affiliation with many top prep schools has benefitted not only the USNA Foundation and our students but also each of these schools. Since I’ve been in the job, we’ve sponsored more than 1,000 outstanding young men and women and enabled them to enter the U.S. Naval Academy. That’s a record we are very proud of. My successor will be Captain Don Hughes ’88, SC, USN (Ret.), who’s very familiar with the Naval Academy. He attended NAPS and played football here as a Midshipman. He was a Supply Officer and was 3
stationed here for a tour at USNA. He checks into our office in September, so we’ll have a good turnover. He’s a great guy and you’ll enjoy getting to know him! I want to take this opportunity to say “thank you” for your support and confidence in our unique program and in the fine young men and women we’ve sponsored over the years! It’s truly been an honor and a real pleasure for me, too. All the best and Go Navy! H H H H H H
This has been another outstanding year for Athletic & Scholarship Programs. We held our spring and fall meetings and each was attended by many of our 250 active Trustees and their spouses. The focus is always staying relevant to the Naval Academy and promoting the Athletic Excellence Fund and the prep school program. While we are doing very well overall, we still need your help to support both important programs. The information provided below gives you an idea of the wonderful impact we’ve had over the past year. ATHLETIC SUPPORT An important part of our mission is, of course, the Foundation’s monetary support to the Naval Academy and its “Physical Mission” for varsity, club and intramural sports programs. Much of the renovation work at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium was funded by our organization. During the past year, we provided almost $3.3 million in support for recruiting, team and coaches’ travel, trophies, team equipment, radio broadcasting, athletic facilities and annual coaches/Midshipmen athletic awards. In just the last few years, we have contributed more than $55 million in support for the Naval Academy, the preparatory school program and Navy

athletics. We could not accomplish this without the generous contributions each year from our Trustees, parents and friends of the Naval Academy. Thanks again for your sincere commitment to this unique foundation! SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM We completed another successful admissions cycle for the entering Class of 2023 at USNA on 27 June. Of the 50 original Foundation-sponsored prep school students, 46 (30 men and 16 women) earned their appointments and became midshipmen on Induction Day. A couple of them had been delayed for a year due to medical problems, but they checked in this summer after successful rehab during prep school. We lost one who voluntarily resigned from the program, two due to academic performance and one for significant disciplinary problems. All the rest successfully earned their appointments for an outstanding 92 percent matriculation rate. As Plebe Summer draws to a close, we wish the Class of 2023 the very best! We’ve created three new prep school scholarships: • The VADM Ted/Lynda Carter Honor Scholarship, established by our Trustees to honor the Carters’ outstanding five-year tour and success at USNA. • The Coach Rick Forzano Memorial Scholarship, established by his many players and friends and the Forzano family to remember his outstanding life and coaching career. • The LT(JG) Alton Grizzard ’91 Memorial ArmyNavy Scholarship, established by Tara Lee ’91 and her husband Mike Denning USMA ’92, in memory of the four-year Navy quarterback whose indomitable spirit embodied the best elements of the Army-Navy rivalry. In order to establish a permanent USNA Foundation Honor or Memorial prep school scholarship, a donation of $50,000 is required. This can be donated all at once or over several years; it’s up to the donor(s). Contact our office if you are interested in making a contribution or establishing a permanent scholarship. We hosted a wonderful reception the day before Induction Day for excited Foundation students and their families at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium VADM William P. Lawrence “N” Room. More than 250 people attended the event. It was a great way to say “Welcome Aboard!” to the newest Foundation members of the plebe class. The outgoing USNA Superintendent, Vice Admiral “Ted” Carter ’81, USN;
CAPT ED WALLACE ’72, USN (RET.), WITH ENZO MORENO ’23 AND HIS PARENTS STEVEN AND MONICA
incoming Superintendent, Vice Admiral Sean Buck ’83, USN; Commandant of Midshipmen, Captain “TR” Buchanan ’92, USN; Alumni Association/Foundation, President/CEO, Byron Marchant ’78 and our Chairman,
Rear Admiral Tom Lynch ’64, USN (Ret.), were all there along with many Trustees and their spouses. Next year’s Foundation prep class (USNA 2024) is already formed, with 44 prep students enrolled at 15 affiliated prep schools for next year (2019-2020). Their credentials are just as impressive. Historically, 95 percent of our sponsorees become midshipmen each year. Of that number, more than 90 percent will graduate from the Academy in four years with their B.S., the highest percentage of any accession source to USNA. So, this program is a win-win for our students and the Naval Academy! If you have any questions or want to do more to support our programs, don’t hesitate to call our office at 410-295-4095 or check out our website at www.usna.com/ asp. Thanks again for your outstanding support!

PREP SCHOOL IN THE SPOTLIGHT: THE KENT SCHOOL The Kent School in Kent, CT, is one of 17 affiliated prep schools in the USNA Foundation program. Founded in 1906, it is one of the top co-ed private secondary schools in the country. It has an outstanding college prep academic program as well as some of the top athletic teams in New England. Check out its excellent website at www.kent-school.edu. The USNA Foundation has been sending both male and female recruited rowers to The Kent School for more than 30 years. Not only do these USNA Foundation-sponsored candidates receive very strong academic preparation for the Naval Academy, but they also compete for one of the nation’s top rowing teams. The Kent School is arguably the top rowing (crew) school in the United States. On Sunday, 19 July 2019, the United States Naval Academy, representing all American servicemen and servicewomen, won the prestigious King’s Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in England. Remarkably, its eightoared shell included three graduates of Kent School, the culmination of a long and fruitful relationship between Kent and the Naval Academy. Said Rob Friedrich, Navy Coach: “Two of the three Kent rowers in our King’s Cup eight, John Lamb and Ashlyn Dawson, arrived at Kent in 2015 through the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic & Scholarship

Programs, which advances the admission of highly qualified candidates to the Naval Academy by providing scholarship opportunities to enable aspiring young men and women to attend private preparatory schools for a year. Our relationship with Kent has been truly exceptional. Many of our Foundation candidates who attended Kent have been completely prepared for the academics at Navy but have also taken leadership roles. Many have become team captains and true leaders in the Navy and Marine Corps after graduation. It’s been a great match and a huge strength for our Navy rowing program. We look forward to continuing to foster this tight bond between two great institutions.”
