Founded in 1944, the Naval Academy Athletic and Scholarship Programs (A&SP), a division of the United States Naval Academy Foundation, encourages and supports athletic excellence at the Naval Academy. The program is responsible for grants and awards that recognize superiority in athletics and a comprehensive scholarship program to ensure that the Naval Academy has the best scholar-athletes in the nation.
MISSION To provide leadership, need based funding, guidance and mentoring to all Foundation Preparatory School students, to provide needed private funding to all USNA varsity, club and intramural sports teams through The Fund for Athletic Excellence and to remain a highly respected organization in support of the Physical Mission of the U.S. Naval Academy.

ABOUT US
Through a need-based scholarship program, the Foundation (A&SP), provides one year of post-high school education to qualified young men and women who need further academic preparation before they enter the Naval Academy. Thanks to the Foundation’s (A&SP) sponsorship, more than 4,000 motivated candidates with excellent leadership, scholastic and athletic potential have graduated from the Naval Academy since 1944. It is a “win-win” for the Naval Academy and for these outstanding candidates!
FROM THE CHAIRMAN Greetings fellow trustees and welcome to our 2022-2023 Annual Newsletter. Thank you in advance to everyone who managed to attend the fall trustee meeting. It has been a fast-paced start to my tenure as your chairman. I have much to learn and many trustees yet to meet. But what has been clear at every level of the organization is that your selfless ADM Bill Moran ’81, USN (Ret.) and dedicated contributions to this organization is making a difference. Your efforts and love for the U.S. Naval Academy physical mission are central to the growth and success of our athletic programs at Navy. As Chet and the Supe remind us of every year—we help provide that “margin of excellence” at Navy. It has been an historic year of accomplishment for Navy Athletics and the Alumni Association and Foundation. • For starters, the United States Naval Academy was named the #1 Public School in U.S. News and World Report’s latest release of top educational institutions around the country. Air Force and West Point finished second and third on that list. • Our athletes secured the Star Series against Army for the ninth straight year. Our men’s rugby team finished its first year as a varsity sport by capturing the Division 1 National Championship. And the #1 and #3 overall order of merit graduates in the Class of 2023 were varsity water polo players. • In September, the Alumni Association and Foundation opened the new Fluegel Alumni Center. This facility is a game-changer in facilitating our efforts to execute our mission and engage our alumni, midshipmen, and trustees. The building is another example of the amazing things that happen through the power of philanthropy. The needs of the Naval Academy and Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation continue to evolve to meet the demands of the Brigade and their development as future leaders. While the government funds the U.S. Naval Academy’s core operations, your generous private philanthropy makes it possible for the Academy to provide a margin of athletic excellence and contributes to developing future leaders in the fleet and Marine Corps. Part of our responsibility is to engage partners and connect with those ready to step up to provide critical resources for personnel, programs, and facilities that impact the all-important physical mission at the Naval Academy. This past fiscal year was record breaking for A&SP because of your passion and commitment—you are truly making a difference. This year, trustees and alumni helped provide more than $3.61 million in direct support for all types of athletic activities and needs at the Naval Academy. This includes extensive financial
support to not only the 36 varsity teams, but also to the many club and intramural teams as well as to the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI, including a variety of projects on the yard … new Nutrition Centers in athletic facilities, weight room upgrades, locker room upgrades, stadium enhancements for football and rugby, and so much more. Finally, after a couple of enthusiastic “listening sessions” with several trustees over the summer months, a top priority that emerged was to better communicate who we are and what we do, both inside and outside our A&SP family of trustees. I recently returned from hearing from alumni in Dallas, and I welcome the opportunity to get out to as many Alumni Chapters around the country who will have me. Clarity of mission is essential to our continued success. We provide leadership, need based funding, guidance and mentoring to all Foundation Preparatory School students. We provide needed private funding to all USNA varsity, club and intramural sports teams through The Fund for Athletic Excellence and we remain a highly respected organization in support of the Physical Mission of the U.S. Naval Academy. So, expect to hear more from me and our collective communication and education efforts in the months ahead. We are working in lockstep with the Communications team here at Alumni Association & Foundation to build out our efforts to inform and educate about our mission and vision going forward. Exciting times are ahead. And with that, let me make mention of our new Trustees … our new teammates who will be instrumental in our efforts to support USNA and the physical mission. FALL 2022 New Trustees James ”Jim” Bell ’89 Frank Culbertson ’71 Robert “Bob” Jackson ’76 Sonja Lemott ’95 Ryan Peters ’04 Mark “Turk” Powell ’83 JoAnna Sohovich ’93 Mike Spanos ’87 Scott Wine ’89 Carol Womack Holland ’89 Jeff Johnson ’84 Neil Keegan ’94 William “Bill” Miller ’88 Shannon Webb ’04

We also are proud to announce the following trustees who were elevated to emeritus status and are deserving of our thanks for their many years of service.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The Greek philosopher Heraclitus is credited with the idea that the only constant in life is change. While change can be difficult, change is necessary for us to grow and helps us experience all that life has to offer! With respect to our young prep school scholars, that growth comes in the form of developing morally, mentally, and physically. Their physical CAPT Don Hughes ’88, USN (Ret.) and emotional changes during their prep year are wonderful examples of how valuable this program is and what those changes bring. Change is not the exclusive domain of our students … we have had quite a bit of change here at the Athletic & Scholarship Programs (A&SP)! We had a changing of the guard with our longstanding Chairman, Rear Admiral Tom Lynch ’64, USN (Ret.), stepping down after 20 years of selfless and dedicated leadership to this organization. His efforts and love for the Naval Academy’s physical mission were central to the growth and ongoing success of our athletic programs at Navy. Taking over the reins is Admiral Bill Moran ’81, USN (Ret.), who honorably served our Navy and Country for more than 38 years. He began his career as a naval aviator and rose rapidly to hold command leadership positions at every level of the Navy. Welcome aboard, sir! The U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation (USNA AA&F) moved into our new office building, The Fluegel Alumni Center, which is spectacular! I hope you all will have the opportunity to visit our new home as soon as possible. The Naval 4
Academy has had its’ own share of noteworthy changes. We have a new Superintendent, a new Academic Provost, a new Head Football Coach, and a National Champion Rugby team. Through all the changes, we continue to provide highly qualified Naval Academy candidates scholarship opportunities to any one of our 16 affiliated preparatory schools and our support of the Naval Academy’s Physical Mission continues to grow. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The scholarship program is our raison d’être and our main effort during the academic year is helping our young men and women meet the requirements necessary for them to earn their appointments. We help them navigate their academic courseload, understand USNA’s admissions process, and do our best to help manage expectations. The Foundation sponsored prep class for the USNA Class of 2027 began their journey in the fall of 2022 and of the 44 (29 men and 15 women) students that began, 41 (26 men and 15 women) earned their appointments for a 93 percent matriculation rate. Our students attended 11 of the 16 affiliated prep schools and hailed from 19 different states and one from Bogota, Columbia. The largest numbers coming from Florida, California, Maryland, and Virginia. We welcomed the incoming plebes to Annapolis with an ice cream social in the Ron Terwilliger ’63 Center for Student Athletes on 28 June 2023 for students, their families, Trustees, and invited guests. This is quickly becoming a fun tradition that included words of wisdom from our then-Superintendent, Vice Admiral Sean Buck ’83, USN, and USNA AA&F President and CEO, Jeff
Webb ’95. The next day we proudly watched as our Foundation Scholars took the oath of office. They have completed Plebe Summer and have been working hard during their first semester at USNA. The holidays are right around the corner, and we wish them all the best as they work to achieve excellence in all they do. The Foundation sponsored prep class for the USNA Class of 2028 hit the decks running and they are enrolled at 12 of our 16 prep schools. We have 42 (26 men and 16 women) students from 17 states and one from Germany. California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida led the way. The A&SP advances the admission of these highly qualified individuals to the Naval Academy by providing need-based scholarships to some of the country’s finest preparatory schools for a year of fine tuning for academics and physical fitness. At the risk of being redundant … this program is an absolute WIN-WIN! PHYSICAL MISSION SUPPORT The Naval Academy Mission is: “To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.” Our scholarship programs continue to afford opportunities to scholar-athletes who aspire to live up to that mission. We believe that athletic excellence helps develop “Leaders to Serve the Nation” and take immense pride in the role we play in providing financial support to the Naval Academy for our 36 varsity sports, 15 club sports, intramurals and the Naval Academy Preparatory School. A key component of the development of our midshipmen is the emphasis placed on the Physical Mission. Investing “Margin of Excellence” funding in support of the Physical Mission is essential in allowing navy athletics to fulfill its mission of leadership development and excellence in competition. I am proud to report a record-breaking year in which more than $4.4M was raised for the Fund for Athletic Excellence! These are unrestricted funds and support all our teams and represents the “Margin of Excellence” that helps our teams go

from good to great. The proof is in the results … our teams have won the Patriot League President’s Cup nine consecutive years and won the Army-Navy STAR series the last nine years as well. We had 20 All-Americans, seven Academic All-Americans, four Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, 14 National/ Conference Coaches of the Year, 20 National/Conference Players of the Year, four Patriot League Conference Rookies of the Year, 17 Conference Championships, and finally, one National Championship in Rugby! One of our keys to success is hiring the best coaches to lead our Midshipmen into competition. Every year during our semi-annual fall and spring A&SP meetings we select the most deserving Coach of the Year for the fall, winter, and spring seasons. This past year we had special seasons for several of our coaches and felt they were all deserving of special recognition, so we had co-winners for fall and spring where we selected the following: WINTER 2021-2022 FALL 2022 SPRING 2022
Kip Simons—men’s gymnastics Gavin Hickie—men’s rugby Alfonso Medius—sprint football Shawn Bagnall—lightweight rowing Chris Garner—men’s tennis
Each coach received an engraved desk clock as well as a monetary award. Congratulations to each of these wonderful coaches and their teams for superbly representing the Blue & Gold! None of this happens without the determined efforts of our resolute team and we certainly could not achieve all that we have without them. Tracey Cook and Mariola Baker continue to do an amazing job day in and day out! We added Kelly Johnson to the team on a part time basis and she has proven to be a welcomed addition. Our team is enterprise wide, and it takes all hands rowing in the same direction to achieve the wonderful results we have this past year! Our communications team, led by John Schofield, is an absolute team of superstars who add significant value to everything we do! The unfailing support we receive from our Chairman, Bill Moran ’81 and our USNA AA&F President and CEO, Jeff Webb ’95 keeps us moving in the right direction and I am grateful for their support, guidance, and leadership. Special thanks to our A&SP Trustees, alumni, friends, and parents for their ongoing and generous support. Please let me know if you have questions or want to know more about how you can be a part of and/or support this one-of-a-kind organization! Contact us via phone, email, or at www.usna.com/asp. We welcome visitors to our new facility at 301 King George Street in Annapolis. Thank you and GO NAVY … BEAT ‘EM ALL, especially Army!

PREP SCHOOL IN THE SPOTLIGHT SALISBURY SCHOOL Founded in 1901, the Salisbury School (CT) has forever lived and championed the mission to graduate men of character and promise. Almost all design elements of the school support this: from our scenic, rural location two hours north of New York City to our intentional student body size of 310 students, most of whom are boarders. Salisbury is a place that is built to do one single thing well, to educate boys with leading educational pedagogy applied in and out of the classroom. This paradigm is more relevant and important than ever. A school designed and built for boys has a distinct value proposition during these times, just as the Naval preps future home in Annapolis has a well-defined mission. The post-graduate student at Salisbury School is one who is highly motivated to contribute fully to life on the Hilltop: academically, socially and athletically. Salisbury typically enrolls 15-20 post graduates each year: many plan on playing college athletics, but not all. They are fully immersed in all that our leading school has to offer. There are 18 advanced placement classes, as well as a variety of electives to choose from. Athletically, we have earned recent championships in baseball, lacrosse, crew, ice hockey, squash and football. These men are as invested in school as any Salisbury student; the personal growth developed during

his fifth year of secondary school is as important as his ultimate matriculation. It is with great pride that we remain strong partners with the USNA Foundation’s Athletic & Scholarship Programs. This decades long relationship has brought Foundation preps to our campus where they are leaders, scholars and athletes that elevate the entire community. As aspirational, driven young men, they model the “why” and as Salisbury graduates, they make us proud. One hundred percent of the Foundation candidates have matriculated to the Naval Academy. During the graduation ceremonies, the school makes special notice of their commitment to serve our country and for their positive contributions as leaders and scholars in our community.

NAVY SISTERS A&SP STUDENTS SHARE IMPROBABLE JOURNEY TO THE ACADEMY Ariella Clarino ’27 and Eva Ottenbreit ’27 couldn’t believe what they were telling each other. The odds were infinitesimal. But there were just enough coincidences for it to be true. They traced their paths back to the same Chinese orphanage. They shared a pre-adopted last name (Dong Fang). They attended the same prep school. They share a deep commitment to serve. They aspired to attend the Naval Academy.
O
n 27 June, Clarino and Ottenbreit reported to the Naval Academy for I-Day minus one. While their journeys began more than 7,000 miles away in the Jiangxi province of China, Ottenbreit and Clarino started their plebe year together. Although they met less than a year ago, they expect to be forever linked. “It’s like we’re sisters,” Clarino said. “At prep school, she was my Navy sister. Even though we only met a few months ago, she really feels like a sister to me. I’m blessed to go through this experience with her.” Clarino and Ottenbreit are Athletic & Scholarship Program (A&SP) students who attended Northwestern Preparatory School in Crestline, CA. They were placed in the same dorm upon entrance at Northwestern and in adjoining bunk beds. Once they started talking, they began to unravel the extraordinary coincidences of their parallel lives. Ottenbreit and Clarino peeled back the layers once they revealed to

one another they each were adopted. Then, they learned they came from the same orphanage and were there at the same time. It seems inconceivable that out of all the orphanages in China, all of the potential universities to apply to and the 16 Naval Academy affiliated preparatory schools, Ottenbreit and Clarino followed the same path. “It was crazy,” Ottenbreit said. “I was shocked. Who would have thought that on an itty-bitty mountaintop in California, that we would have chosen the same prep school and the same service academy?” Ottenbreit was 10 months old when her parents, Kari and Mark, traveled to China to bring her home in February 2005. There was no way to predict she and Clarino (who was also a baby at the Taihe Orphanage) would someday cross paths again. Clarino’s parents, Lorrena and Richard, adopted her when she was 10 months old. Born on 20 October 2004, Clarino was left outside a fire station in TaiHe province in December 2004. An accompanying note included her birthday. Ariella Clarino ’27 at the Taihe Orphanage in China where she was adopted by Richard and Lorrena Clarino on 22 August 2005. Ottenbreit is from Grosse Ile, MI, while Clarino hails from Chino Hills, CA. Their parents became friends during their time at Northwestern Prep. They also learned that each of their mothers are twins. Kari Ottenbreit said it’s been surreal watching her daughter realize her dream of attending the Naval Academy. The Ottenbreit family knows she will make the most of this opportunity. “She was born with an inspiring drive and a commitment to everything she puts her mind to,” Kari Ottenbreit said. “She has a genuine desire to give back to the country where she was afforded opportunities not available in China. “Eva appreciates life and embraces all things new and challenging. Having Eva attend the Academy is a blessing we never dreamed of when she was placed in our arms 18 years ago.” ’Honor and a Blessing’ Hearing her father’s sea stories, watching movies about the Navy and the TV series JAG sparked Clarino’s interest in the Navy. Her father served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. Clarino’s intent to attend the Naval Academy was among the goals written on a whiteboard in her home on 9 May 2016. The Clarino family visited the Academy in August 2018 as part of her high school tour. She returned home determined to earn her way into the Academy. Clarino attended the virtual summer seminar during the pandemic in 2021. She was accepted to several universities that she applied for in California, including the University of California-Berkeley. While in high school, Clarino completed three associate degrees as a dual enrollee. Her parents are immigrants from the Philippines. Those influences, and an innate desire to serve, ultimately led her to the Naval Academy. “I grew up in a military family,” she said. “I was always instilled with the idea to give back to the country. It’s about giving back to the country that has done so much for my family.” “(To be at the Naval Academy is) an honor and a blessing.” Ottenbreit visited the Academy as part of her eighthgrade field trip to Washington, DC. Her mother said she 24
came home from that trip and announced to the family the Naval Academy was where she was going to go to college. She attended summer STEM as a rising sophomore in June 2019 and the Academy’s summer seminar (virtually) in June 2021. Ottenbreit said she was impressed with the Academy’s structure. She wanted to be a part of the Brigade of Midshipmen who unite around a common cause. “Everyone is here for the same reason,” Ottenbreit said. “We want to serve. We want to give back.” Kari Ottenbreit said her daughter attended the Coast Guard Academy’s AIM summer program virtually in 2021 and was offered an appointment there as well. Nothing could sway her from coming to Annapolis, Kari Ottenbreit said. “Her heart stayed with USNA,” Kari said. The Naval Academy was a natural fit for Ottenbreit who sails, rows and swims. Richard Clarino said the family feels blessed to share this journey. He said timing was critical for his future daughter to join their family. When the Clarinos were going through with the adoption application process, it was delayed for several months because paperwork required Richard’s signature. He was unable to sign because he was at sea. “If we were on time with our paperwork, we would have been matched with a different child,” he said. “But because of the delay, we were matched with Ariella.” Clarino is grateful for all that America has provided, her father said. “Going to the Academy is my daughter’s way of giving back to a country that gave her boundless opportunities,” he said. Clarino and Ottenbreit expect to support each other throughout their time on the Yard and into their professional lives of service. Their Naval Academy journey began with a bond strengthened by shared experiences. “Now that we have each other, it’s like a friend for life,” Ottenbreit said. “We’re going to be with each other forever. If I ever need anything, I know I can go to her.” a Reprinted from the October 2023 Shipmate.

NAVY BLUE AND GOLD … AND GREEN T
his year’s annual faceoff between Navy and Notre Dame football marks the 96th nearly consecutive clash on the gridiron. While both teams begin their 2023 fall campaign, the Dublin game reminds some that this rivalry, beginning in 1927, has roots of a crosscountry relationship dating back before World War II. While World War II raged on, the Fighting Irish lost funding due to a dwindling student body, however the Naval Academy had the means to offer them financial support. Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, Notre Dame president 1952- 1987, credits the Navy for keeping the sinking school afloat and vowed to continue the series as long as the Navy was interested. Today, the rivalry lives on. One Navy midshipman shares her own connection to both the Irish and American worlds. “Growing up in Ireland gave me a truly unique perspective to life here in America,” said Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Lucy Maule. “Although my life has been quite different than most of my peers, I wouldn’t change a thing. I am quite proud to be Irish-American.” The daughter of a retired American naval officer and an Irishwoman from Achill Island, Lucy was born and raised in Wicklow, Ireland. She is the youngest of Kirk Maule and Breege Henry’s three children. Lucy spent her formative years in Wicklow, where she said sports were a big part of her life growing up. “I played Gaelic football, hockey, cricket, and took part in horse riding for much of my life.” She attended Brittas Bay National School in Wicklow, then the Rathdown School for Girls in Dublin as a boarding student, which she says set her up for life in the United States.
Maule said that his daughter’s first experience with the U.S. Navy came during a family trip to San Diego, where they saw a variety of different Naval exhibits on Coronado Island. Soon after that, Lucy attended a week-long STEM camp at the Naval Academy and was selected for the academy’s Summer Seminar programme two years later. Upon receiving her leaving certificate, or high school diploma, in 2019, Lucy attended Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, for a year via the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association & Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarships Programme. She arrived for the Naval Academy’s Plebe Summer in 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Like everywhere around the world, COVID made plebe (freshman) year a bigger challenge than I expect it normally is,” said Lucy. “What kept us all sane were the people around us. I was lucky to have an amazing roommate. Even though she was from a polar opposite upbringing, we became inseparable after that year. Our company mates became our family.” Lucy also has a family history of service. She is the fourth generation in her family to serve in the U.S. military, which includes her grandmother who worked as an Army secretary for Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in Paris after WWII. “I’ve come to realize that service is part of my DNA,” Lucy said. “Community is always something that I’ve always searched for, and I’m grateful to have found that here in Annapolis.” No matter how the game ends on August 26th, Lucy plans on going into Dublin to celebrate the experience with her classmates. She may be cheering for Navy, but the game will bring her close to her Irish home. a Reprinted from the 2023 Navy-Notre Dame football program. 25
