2022-2023 IMPACT REPORTS

Naval Academy Fund

SUMMARY The Naval Academy Fund is the most powerful and versatile way to support the U.S. Naval Academy. This is the engine that fuels all Academy philanthropy and allows the Superintendent the flexibility to meet the emerging needs of USNA. While the federal government provides the funds to support the Academy’s general operations, a variety of programs would not be able to reach their potential without the support of alumni, parents, and friends of the Academy. Today’s midshipmen graduate into an increasingly complex environment and appropriated funds are not always available to meet evolving curriculum initiatives aimed at preparing Naval Academy graduates to be junior officer leaders of character. Academy leadership uses your unrestricted gifts to the Naval Academy Fund to jumpstart or sustain programs within this growing curriculum. Gifts to the Naval Academy Fund that support the operations of the Foundation in turn make possible a wide variety of Academy programs—including study abroad opportunities, senior year Capstone projects, and experiential leadership development programs. In addition, the Naval Academy Fund provided $2.6 million to the Alumni Association supporting programs and services for the Naval Academy community. It is this flexibility that makes the Naval Academy Fund the Superintendent’s number one priority for private gift support.

SUPERINTENDENT’S UNRESTRICTED FUND The following initiatives benefited from the $2 million that the Superintendent can designate to emerging initiatives in need of support: • A study for the expansion and relocation of the columbarium • Midshipmen mental health and resiliency resources, including the expanded use of web-based tools such as NeuroFlow. • Admissions marketing and outreach • Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives • U.K. Scholarship Program • Midshipman Experiential Leadership opportunities (NOLS) • NAPS Athletic Program • Superintendent’s representational support

THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Naval Academy Fund also supports mission-critical functions of the Alumni Association, which serves the Naval Academy and all its alumni. While most colleges and universities at least partially fund their alumni and development operations, by law the Naval Academy cannot provide that support. The Naval Academy Fund augments other Alumni Association revenue streams to help provide alumni services such as Shipmate magazine, class reunion support, career services, WaveTops e-news, usna.com, and staff support for alumni chapters, shared interest groups, and parent clubs worldwide

THE FOUNDATION Unrestricted gifts to the Naval Academy Fund provide the sole source of funding for the operations and staffing of the Foundation. In turn, the Foundation executes all fundraising in support of the Naval Academy, averaging well more than $60 million in annual commitments over the last several years.

GREAT CLASS CHALLENGE May 2023 marked the second annual Great Class Challenge! The challenge is one of the largest drivers of unrestricted support, and for five days USNA classes battled it out to become the class with the highest participation rate and number of donors. The challenge generated a record-breaking 6,314 alumni donors who raised $2.3 million in support of the Naval Academy’s top strategic priorities. The competitive nature of the challenge resulted in 27 classes matching our surpassing their total alumni participation from the first challenge in 2022, with nine classes more than doubling their participation. BZ to our new Great Class Challenge champs, the Class of 1984!

SEE YOUR NAME IN LIGHTS We are happy to announce a new opportunity to recognize our most generous unrestricted donors. This digital display, shown below, recognizes the annual contributions of donors making gifts of $5,000 or more to the Naval Academy Fund each year and allows individuals an annual opportunity to be recognized in the Fluegel Alumni Center. All gifts of $5,000 or more to the Naval Academy Fund made between 1 January–31 December will be recognized in the following calendar year.
