Support from the Shippensburg University Foundation to students, faculty, and programs totaled $5,545,302 for 2020-2021. Chart Title
SU students, faculty, and programs benefited from $4,395,782 in direct support while $1,149,520 was added to the principal of endowed funds that benefit Shippensburg University. Understanding Direct and Indirect Support: Direct support is dollars that are restricted by the donor for a specific purpose and are spent on behalf of the University, at the direction of a University releasing agent (Dean, Department Chair, Director, etc.). The exceptions to restricted dollars in this category are the grants awarded to the University from the SU Foundation Board of Directors at the request of the President of the University. Indirect support is dollars that have been added to the principal of an endowment for the benefit of the students, programs, and faculty at the University, and are restricted by the donor for a specific purpose.

Once again, the SHIP Family rallied in support of SHIP students during the SU Foundation’s annual 24 hours of giving day. Funds raised supported the most urgent needs of the University, the Student Emergency Fund, textbooks, the colleges, scholarships, and much more. MIni-campaigns within ShipGives raised money for Greek Life, athletics, and the Center for Land Use and Sustainability. Karen (Leitzel) and Neil Bashore Scholarship – Mathematics This scholarship is for full-
time, first-year students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in mathematics with an applied mathematics or statistics concentration, or who are seeking certification to teach mathematics at the secondary level. Applicants must be PA residents, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrate financial need.
John E. Clinton Scholarship This scholarship is
for an upper division student who has completed at least 60 credits. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate marketing, management or accounting degree program. First preference will be given to a transfer student from Harrisburg Area Community College who completed the coursework for an associate degree in business. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 and complete an official, compensated internship with the Shaner Group.
Kathryn Hughes Seaber Educational Impact Scholarship This scholarship is for
full-time, first-year students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree administered by the College of Education and Human Services. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8, demonstrate a passion for helping others through volunteer service and extracurricular activities, and demonstrate financial need.

The Richard A. Cranney Sr. Veteran’s Award This
scholarship is for a full-time, first-year student who is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States armed forces, is serving actively, or has served in the National Guard or Reserves. The scholarship may be retained for three additional academic years.
Linda Mauger-Harnish and Martin Harnish College of Business Scholarship
This scholarship is for full-time, first-year students pursuing an undergraduate degree administered by the John L. Grove College of Business. First preference will be given to PA residents. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 and demonstrate financial need.
Edward Christian Ruth Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for current full-time students who have completed a minimum of 30 credits. Recipients must be residents of Bedford County, PA. First preference will be given to students pursuing an undergraduate degree administered by the John L. Grove College of Business who are members in good standing of Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity.
Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Joan Schroeder Scholarship This scholarship is for an upper division student pursuing an undergraduate degree administered by the Chemistry Department. Recipients must have earned a minimum of 30 credits, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and demonstrate financial need.
Skiles Excavating, Inc. Brandon E. Skiles Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is
for full-time undergraduate students who have completed a minimum of 60 credits at Shippensburg University prior to benefiting from the scholarship. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in civil or electrical engineering in the School of Engineering and have a minimum GPA of 2.8.
University Bible Fellowship Scholarship
This scholarship is for full-time, first-year students. Applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 1200, rank in the top ten percent of their high school class, and demonstrate financial need.
W.J. Wollyung III College of Business Scholarship
This scholarship is for full-time, first-year students pursuing an undergraduate degree from the John L. Grove College of Business. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and demonstrate financial need.
Athletic Scholarship
McDonald Cziraky Women’s Basketball Scholarship This scholarship is for a current
student who is a member in good standing of the Shippensburg University women’s basketball team. First preference is given to students pursuing an undergraduate degree from the John L. Grove College of Business. Second preference is given to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

John T. Arms Shippensburg University Scholarship (1 new award) This scholarship, established through a gift to the Centre Foundation, is available to full-time, first-year students from Halifax High School (first preference) or Dauphin County, PA, who are pursuing an undergraduate degree program in science, mathematics or computer science.
Ken and Ginny Gill Scholarship for Elementary Education (1 new award) This scholarship is
for full-time, first-year students majoring in Early Childhood/Elementary Education (PreK-4). First preference is given to a student from Snyder County, PA. Second preference is given to any student residing in PA who has demonstrated financial need.
Ken and Ginny Gill Scholarship for Secondary Education (1 new award) This scholarship
is for full-time, first-year students majoring in Secondary Education. First preference is given to students from Snyder County. Second preference is given to any student residing in PA. Recipients must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need.
Phyllis Shambaugh Meenan Elementary Education Scholarship (1 new award) This
scholarship is for full-time, first-year students majoring in elementary education. Recipients must be graduates of Carlisle High School.

SHIP STUDENTS NEEDED A LITTLE HELP... and the SHIP family responded. The SU Foundation, with the assistance of the Office of Financial Aid, awarded over $24,000 in grants for tuition assistance, housing, textbooks, and food. About the fund: The Student Emergency Fund was established with donor contributions to the SU Foundation to assist undergraduate students who have immediate financial needs that directly affect their ability to continue their education at Ship. The fund is intended to be a supplemental financial resource when students are unable to meet immediate and essential expenses at times of crisis such as illness or death of a family

The fund is not meant to replace financial aid, and does not need to be repaid. The fund is open to all students with priority given to students with the highest financial need. Financial needs may include assistance with purchasing textbook and/or course-related materials, paying for tuition, food, or student housing. Grants from the Student Emergency Fund may not be used to pay for student fees (i.e. student activity, technology, wellness, or student union, or parking fines, etc.).

Ship Family Funded Scholarships Shippensburg University Scholarship for Outstanding Students
This fund was established in 1977 with an initial deposit of $250 from faculty, staff, and administrators. Today, it funds seven full-tuition scholarships each year.

The Abermans’ Story
It really wasn’t a hard decision for us to establish our scholarship funds with the Shippensburg University Foundation. Life experiences can drive such commitment. My family’s finances were devastated by my mother’s death from cancer when I was in high school. There was no possible way for me to afford a college education. But thanks to scholarship support, I was able to graduate from The University of Pennsylvania without a dollar of debt. I will never forget that financial support because it changed the direction of my life forever. I was a member of the Psychology Department at Shippensburg University for 35 years. Kathy taught high school English for many years and then spent 12 years working at SU’s Learning Assistance Center. We frequently discussed excellent students we knew who had to withdraw from the university because they lacked the financial resources to continue. The fact that a lack of financial support blocked qualified and motivated students from their desired career paths, motivated us, in simpler words, to “pass it along.” When someone has helped you, then help others. That is the message we would like to convey to all the scholarship winners that the SU Foundation will support now and in the coming years. When you reach the point in your lives when you can afford to do it, “Pass it Along.” Help future students by setting up your own scholarship fund. When we started to participate in this scholarship event, the number of attendees fit into a small room on this campus. Over the years, we have had to move to a larger room to accommodate our growing size. Can you imagine how large our future numbers could be with your participation? We will always be grateful for the support we received. Remember that fact when the opportunity comes to help future students.

Tara’s Story
I attended Shippensburg University from 2014 to 2017 and had a genuinely wonderful experience. I was heavily involved in music and met some of my best friends through playing in different ensembles. I also worked as a tutor and conducted research in the psychology department. Having been to different schools and seeing different departments, I think that the psychology department at Shippensburg is something special. The faculty were very supportive of me, both as a student and as a human being. I ended up graduating a semester early, and I am lucky to have had an undergraduate experience that made saying goodbye so hard. My scholarship meant so much to me, and I’m not sure I have the words to express that. I am a first-generation college student from a middle-class family that had to stretch to make ends meet. Receiving a scholarship took some of the pressure off in deciding whether I could afford to go to college. It also felt like someone believed in me—someone who had never met me looked at my record and thought I was worth the
investment. In some ways, being recognized as a promising scholar was almost as meaningful as the financial support. I felt seen as a valuable, academic scholar for the first time. Since graduating from Ship, I have completed a master’s degree in child and adolescent clinical psychology, and I just finished my second semester of my doctorate in clinical psychology. I am a Clinical PsyD student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and I also volunteer for the Gender and Sexuality Development Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. I stay in touch with my scholarship benefactors, Dr. and Mrs. Aberman, because they have become like an extra set of grandparents to me. They are some of the kindest, warmest people I have ever met, and I am grateful that they saw something in me. I always let them know when something important is happening for me, almost to show them that their investment was a good one. Their scholarship truly impacted me beyond the obvious financial benefit, and I gained another family.

THE DR. ELNETTA G. JONES SCHOLARSHIP
DR. WILLIAM PEIGHTEL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship honors Dr. Elnetta Jones, the former Dean of Special Academic Programs at Shippensburg University. The fund was established in recognition of the numerous contributions she made to the institution. Many of the programs and services she initiated are still in operation today. As the Dean of the Division of Undeclared Majors, Dr. Jones understood that many students need time to explore the educational opportunities available to them in college. Her scholarship is for first-year exploratory studies students.
This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. William Peightel who served thousands of Shippensburg University students as a member of the Biology Department faculty for 35 years. In addition to his teaching and serving as department chair, Dr. Peightel served as chairman of the committee that planned the construction of Franklin Science Center.

DR. RONALD K. AND DEBRA A. TAYLOR MARKETING SCHOLARSHIP Dr. Ronald Taylor and Mrs. Debra Taylor established their scholarship in 2014 to leave a lasting legacy at Shippensburg University. Dr. Taylor was a faculty member in the Department of Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship for 25 years, and Mrs. Taylor served as the House Manager for the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center for several years. The Taylors feel they received much from the University and Shippensburg community. Their scholarship is for an upper division student pursuing an undergraduate degree in marketing.

DR. KIMBERLY BRIGHT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Kimberly Bright who served as an Associate Professor of Special Education at Shippensburg University from 2002 until her passing in June 2010. Her colleagues remember her as an outstanding educator and administrator who was a leader in the field of special education in central Pennsylvania for three decades. The scholarship is for a current student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program leading to a master’s degree or certification in Special Education.

Virtual Field Trips: The New Reality. 2020-2021 research project funded by: The Raymond and Suzanne Adams Research Endowment for Education and the Anita E. (May) Weiss Joint Undergraduate Student/Faculty Research Endowment for Education
“This funding gave me a great opportunity to advance the groundwater quality and sanitation research that I initiated in 2018 while visiting the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, as a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow. My professional development has been greatly facilitated by the funding. In addition to the important baseline data that my study generated for the study area, a manuscript based on the results is currently in press with the Springer Journal of Environmental Monitoring and Assessment. I am also presently working on a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant proposal to advance the study on a regional scale. I highly appreciate the support from the Shippensburg University Foundation.”. Joseph T. Kresge Science ENDOWMENT How the Kresge Science Endowment began... In December 2002, the
Shippensburg University Foundation, on behalf of the University, embarked on a Kresge Foundation challenge grant campaign which culminated in June 2004 with $1,134,049 in cash and planned giving commitments toward establishment of the first-ever science equipment endowment to benefit students and faculty. Such strong charitable support from alumni, current and retired faculty, parents, corporations, and other private foundations successfully secured the second-half of the Kresge Foundation’s challenge grant toward this science endowment.
Since it was established, the Kresge Science Endowment has provided over $450,000 for scientific equipment for students in the chemistry, biology, psychology, geography/earth science, and physics departments. This year, it funded the purchase of 193 pieces of laboratory equipment for the physics department, 41 pieces of song bird equipment for the biology department, and a gas chromatograph fitted with an flame ionization detector and headspace sample introduction for the chemistry department.
