The Woods Honors College offers talented students enriching undergraduate experiences. It offers many curricular and extracurricular opportunities while promoting scholarship, leadership, service and exploration. Benefits include small classes, priority scheduling, an honors residence hall option, and special undergraduate research, service-learning, and study abroad opportunities.
Ship Start allows area high school students to earn college credits at Ship for a fraction of the price. Ship Start courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters, as well as during two summer terms. Eligible students who have completed 10th grade can enroll in Ship Start classes as early as the summer between their sophomore and junior year. ship.edu/shipstart

Get to know Big Red and Shippo
Big Red | Big Red is a red-tailed hawk (no, they’re not a parrot), and captain of our Raider Ship. Catch them around campus in their tri-corn hat, Raider gear, and iconic light-up shoes.
Shippo the Hippo | Big Red’s first mate and the university’s secondary mascot. Shippo was the runner up during the 2005 mascot madness competition and rumor has it he actually won! After an April Fool’s joke in 2023, and a lot of positive feedback, Shippo was named first mate!
